Larry Connor conveys straightforward essential information to the advanced, intermediate, and *want to know* beginning beekeeper in this brilliant book. I'm a 20 year beekeeper, and I'm always eager to have someone who can provide me with new, or at least a fresh perspective about how to do something simpler and more effectively. Larry Connor has a very powerful voice in saying it in a brief, concise, and totally helpful way so that you get the lightbulb turned on, and you can go straight out and apply the simplified method. Bee Sex Essentials, Queen Rearing Essentials, and Increase Essentials are all MUST HAVE books for the beekeeper's bookshelf. I like to reread these in the down months to retune my thinking for the season ahead. Get this book if you are, or are thinking about, making your own queens. Totally Solid Book with great information - even if you are a know-it-all veteran beekeeper. Get this book!

Most books about honey bees are rich in detail about keeping bees but usually only contain a basic chapter on the biology and life cycle of the honey bee. I have been preparing lectures on the biology of the honey bee for a number of years and have always found it difficult to locate authoritative information, in lay mans terms, that I can use. This book fills that gap and I would highly recommend it to any beekeeper or student wishing to gain a more advanced understanding of the biology of bees. For a more advanced book again on this topic you could also try Honeybee Democracy by Seeley, but this book contains more information on behavior of the bee.I gave the book 4 stars mainly because I find Connor's writing style not that catching.
