Beautiful Boy [DVD] [2019]

Fantastic film, Timothee Chalamet and Steve Carrel give amazing performances. This film is heartbreaking to watch but ultimately hopeful and uplifting. Chalamet is a revelation, he’s mesmerising as the son struggling with addiction and Carrel is heartbreakingly real as the loving father battling to save him from himself. The film could have descended into the melodramatic but it never does, it’s an honest portrait of the effects of addiction written from the point of view of the family who are affected by the addict’s behaviour. The cinematography and the score are well done and the pacing is good. It’s a real life story based on two books, one written by David Sheff, a father battling to save his son and the other written by Nic Sheff, the son that he’s trying to save. It’s a heartbreaking but rewarding watch, highly recommend.

Amazing actors, amazing movie and the amazing power of love!

This is a no thrills presentation of a true story of drug addiction and how it not only strips the victim of their identity but damages all those who care for them. A superb performance from all, but once again Chalamet truly shines as a young star with huge potential and charisma - a truly natural talent. It is hard to imagine anyone else playing the son. Another riveting performance from Carell also as the anguished father.

This is harrowing to watch but beautifully shot and acted by the two lead actors. Highly recommended - hankie film!

An instructive, saddening story about a young man's drug addiction, & his father's attempts to help him. I did not feel that the narrative was well handled.

... singt John Lennon in seinem Song "Beautiful Boy", den er für seinen Sohn geschrieben hat. Diese Zeilen handeln vom Willen des Vaters, seinen Sohn zu beschützen, die "Monster" zu vertreiben und einfach da zu sein. Diese Zeilen mögen der Grund sein, warum der reale David Sheff "Beautiful Boy" als Titel für das Buch gewählt hat, in welchem er die Beziehung zu seinem Sohn NIc und dessen Drogenabhängigkeit beschreibt. Auch der Sohn Nic hat seine Erinnerungen an die Zeit seines Drogenkonsums und des ständigen Hin und Her zwischen Entzug, Clean-sein und erneuter Sucht in einem Buch festgehalten. Beide Bücher waren Grundlage des Drehbuchs, allerdings ist die Perspektive des Vaters die den Film bestimmende und strukturierende. Es ist zugleich die Stärke dieses hervorragenden Films, dass es nicht wirklich um das Ausleben der Drogensucht oder die damit zusammenhängenden Gefühle des Rausches geht, sondern im Zentrum steht ein Vater, dem sein Sohn immer mehr zu entgleiten droht. Ein Vater, der seinem Sohn unbedingt aus einem Teufelskreis heraushelfen will, der aber erkennen muss, dass einzig und allein der Wille des Sohne selbst diesen noch vor dem Tod retten kann. Schon zu Beginn des Films wird ein Gespräch von David Sheff mit einem Therapeuten gezeigt, dem er gesteht, dass er seinen Sohn, zu dem er eine sehr enge Beziehung hatte, mittlerweile nicht mehr erkennt. Er will vom Therapeuten wissen, was Crystal Meth mit Menschen macht und wie man sie aus der Sucht herausholen kann, kurz: er will den Sohn zurück, den er kannte. Die Auskünfte des Experten sind eher ernüchternd: Viele Chancen, aus der Sucht heraus zu kommen, gibt es nicht. Der Film springt dann erstmal ein Jahr zurück und setzt nach dem Highschool-Abschluss von Nic ein. Es gibt aber immer wieder auch Rückblenden in die Zeit, in der Nic ca. 12 oder 13 Jahre war, um die Beziehung zum Vater, die Trennung der Eltern und die neue Beziehung des Vaters besser kennen zu lernen. Trotz Scheidung ist es ein stabiles und liebevolles Umfeld, ohne finanzielle Sorgen. Irgendwann stellt David Sheff in einer Entzugsklinik Nic auch die Frage, warum er überhaupt so viele und immer wieder Drogen nehme. Eine klare Antwort gibt es auf diese Frage ebensowenig, wie auf die Frage, ob der Teufelskreis jemals an ein Ende kommt. Genau solche Szenen machen den Film aber ehrlich und realistisch. Einfache Lösungen gibt es nicht - weder was die Sucht noch was die Beziehung betrifft. Der Regisseur Felix van Groningen ist einem großen Publikum durch seinen Film "The Broken Circle" bekannt geworden. Hier war es der Leukämie-Tod der gemeinsamen Tochter, der zwei vorher sich innig liebende Menschen so sehr verstört hat, dass sie nicht mehr zueinander finden konnten. Ein ähnliches "Monster" ist auch die Drogensucht des geliebten Sohnes Nic. Es scheint keine Hilfe und keinen Weg zurück zu geben. Der auf verschiedenen Zeitebenen angesiedelte Film verdeutlicht durch das Ineinander von "Vorher" und "Nachher", wie nah Glück und Unglück, Zuneigung und Ablehnung, Absturz und der immer wieder neue Versuch, einen Anfang zu wagen, beieinander liegen. Insbesondere die beiden Hauptdarsteller als Vater (Steve Carell) und als Sohn (Timothée Chalamet) machen den Film zu einem emotionalen Erlebnis, bei gleichzeitig sehr ruhiger und umspektakulärer Erzählweise. "Beautiful Boy" ist im Kern ein Vater-Sohn-Drama auf dem Hintergrund des Teufelskreises aus Drogensucht und Entzug des gerade erwachsenen Sohnes. Durch die Verschränkung verschiedener Zeiten wird kein kontinuierlicher Absturz erzählt, sondern die Liebe und die Kraft der Familie sind immer wieder spürbar. Ein eindringliches Drama mit hervorragenden Darstellern. In den Extras der DVD sind neben einem Making-of auch Interviews mit den Darstellern und dem Regisseur. Dieser lobt die Zusammenarbeit mit den realen David und Nic Sheff, deren Geschichte der Film erzählt.

Film molto drammatico, che ci dà un grande insegnamento.Ben fatto e ben interpretato dagli attori. Un particolare riconoscimento a Timothée Chalamet per la sua bella e difficile interpretazione. Anche il libro é bellissimo.

This movie is just simply fantastic from start to finish. A true story based on the books “Beautiful Boy” (by David Sheff) and “Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines” (by Nick Sheff). Both David (the father) and Nic (the son with drug problems) are perfectly portrayed by Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet. This movie shows the story of Nic, a young man who always had the perfect family, but got into doing drugs and his family relationship stars to fall apart. David, a writer himself, tries to understand what goes on in a mind of an addict, in order to help his son the best way possible. This movie features beautiful family moments in contrast to moments where the addiction gets in first place and everything falls apart again. A true and very interesting story, based on both books mentioned before (both recommended to be read) that can help other people with drug problems or their relatives. A story about a young man who used every kind of drug he could and survived to tell his story. Here we get an idea of what happened (it’s impossible to put 2 books together in a 2 hour film!), but there is a special and very important message shown here: drugs are a very bad addiction, but there is treatment and a person can get rid of them to live a normal life again. It’s hard for the drug user and his family, but things can change (just like happened to Nic). Not much more to say, except that this is such a great movie and there’s no explanation for not getting any Oscar nomination. Also, this is not a film just for people with drug problems. It’s also a strong drama that can be watched by anyone who finds interesting to be informed about how this addiction disease destroys so many lives every day. A must have for anyone who likes a good drama.

Great movie, I don’t like the main actor, because he always do silly movies, but he makes me change my mind in this movie
