AN OVERLOOKED JAMES STEWART GEM!!
Based on a true story, this docudrama-like film is the story of how police corruption in 1930's Chicago resulted in the wrongful conviction of Frank Wiecek for killing a policeman. A newspaper reporter for the Chicago Times (Stewart) responds to a two line personal ad offering a $5000 reward (a large sum then) for information helping to overturn the verdict 11 years later. He finds a hard working, floor scrubbing woman who is the mother of Wiecek. Since his conviction she has worked and saved every penny to free her son. Stewart is initially unconvinced but writes a sympathy article to promote her cause. Little by little, things come to light that indicate there may be some truth to her beliefs. Once convinced, he is relentless in his pursuit of freeing this man he now believes to be innocent. He reaches dead end after dead end but, finally, with time running out, he finds what he's looking for. Will it be enough and will it be in time? In addition to a very interesting story (and great acting by Stewart, etc) much of the film is shot on location in and around Chicago. Definitely an overlooked gem of Jimmy Stewart's great career. If you like law & order and courtroom dramas you will enjoy this.

Based on a true incident
I liked this movie. I saw it for the first time many years ago, but at the time, didn't know it was based on an actual incident. I prefer films that have a factual basis, and it is made even better with James Stewart in it.

Great Film; Dry as Dust Commentary
I'm so glad these great films are available. So, permit me to note disappointment at the commentary by Ursini and Silver. They are great experts as far as I can tell, but they are so dry and scholarly that I lost interest in the film. I'd hate to take a class from these two. They make film noir boring. The commentaries in other FOX Noir DVDs by Eddie Muller are equally educational and immensely entertaining.

Good early classic James Stewart movie
Have watched early classic James Stewart movies and this one can rec. Being a reporter was not interested to pursue finding out why this person might be innocent in prison. But, then gets involved in the case. Would rec it. Thank you.

Stateville
Most all of Jimmy Stewarts' movies are classics. I worked at the prison the movie was shot at. Amazing to see how little some things have changed, decades later

Wonderful Old Flick
Films from this era can be good of not so good. This is a good one and if you enjoy Jimmy Stewart this is excellent. I can remember seeing this film as a young lad and enjoying it, so I purchased it. Glad I did. Love the true story nature of the film.

Sensational film noir from a great director and a great actor!
Appropriately called a "newspaper noir" by at least one film noir writer, the story is about a newspaper reporter, played by James Stewart, whoworks against all odds to free a man, played by Richard Conte, wrongly convicted of murder.Everything about this film is great, beginning with the story and screenplay, credited to a total of four writers. It is well directed by the greatHenry Hathaway, who cut his teeth making noir films before moving on to more prestigious and expensive pictures. It stars the legendaryJames Stewart, easily one of the top five American actors of all time. Here he gives a typically fine performance as the reporter McNeal. He gets great support from Conte, normally a B-movie actor, appearing here in an A picture. I have yet to see him give a bad performance. The same goes for Lee J. Cobb, a great supporting actor, as Stewart's editor.Cinematographer Joe MacDonald, best known for his work on the western "My Darling Clementine", also worked in film noir with great success. In this film, he and director Hathaway got the opportunity to do some location shooting too, which gives the picture it's realistic flavour.Don't miss this gem from 20th Century Fox!
