Little Bitty Lies: A Novel

MKA draws you in…doesn’t disappoint!
I’ve read most of MKA’s books so I’ve started going back to some of her older ones I may have missed! This was captivating, brilliant, hilarious. I didn’t want to put the book down each night, despite having to be on my toes for a toddler early each morning.

Fun romp -- 3-1/2 stars, rounded up
This is a romp about a Southern lady whose husband suddenly abandons her, leaving her waist-deep in a pile of financial wreckage. With her sassy friend by her side, she cooks up a scheme to fake her vanished spouse's death so she can collect on his life insurance. Naturally, things don't quite go according to plan. There's nothing too deep here, but it's a whole lot of fun.

Good enough to replace when lost.
When my original copy went missing, a new one had to be purchased for the new bookshelves in our house. This is one of those books that can be read again and again, just a perfect example of the "Southern woman revenge" books, probably the all-time best, although Dorothea Benton Frank's new "The Last Original Wife" is up there too. This has a mystery in it for good measure and makes any woman who has ever been wronged start looking for her grandmama's number eight Griswold frying pan. Full of giggles and plot turns, it is a keeper, or if someone walks off with your original, a re-keeper.

Erin is distracting
Daughters can be awful, but they usually need a better reason than this. A daddy's girl whose daddy has run off like this for no clear reason wouldn't be blaming her mother like this - she'd be much more distraught, confused, wondering if she'd caused it. And MIL? I mean she's an entertaining witch, but no one would ever take her seriously, much less her granddaughter. It's a missed character-building opportunity - instead, the author wants us to think of Mary Bliss as a total victim, it seems, and so throws unearned nastiness her way. Too bad - because Mary Bliss is well drawn, and deserved better.

Style with Substance
When Mary Bliss McGowan's husband of 20 years leaves her without explanation except for a brief note and takes the family fortune with him, she tells not a little bitty lie, but a huge whopper -- that her husband is dead. With the assistance of her best friend, she even goes so far as to stage his death, hold a funeral and collect the life insurance to pay off the mountain of debt that he left her with. It's a difficult plan to pull off, especially when a private investigator and an insurance fraud investigator start snooping around and mom-in-law, who's always hated her, claims her son isn't really dead.Little Bitty Lies is a delightful, fun tale that manages to deliver substance with style. Mary Kay Andrews' characters are complex and well-thought out and the plotting is believable and smooth. This was the second book of hers that I've read (the other was Deep Dish, which I also enjoyed) and it's made me a Mary Kay Andrews fan.

Little Bitty Lies is a lot of fun
Little Bitty Lies is a lot of fun. Mary Bliss McGowan and Katherine Weidman are good looking, clever, upper middle-class residents of Fair Oaks, Georgia, and used to having a very nice time of it. Their suburban country club lives are turned upside down and inside out when Mary Bliss' husband does a runner and Katherine's spouse has an affair. The gal-pals team up and tackle problems with what is often wickedly funny southern charm. Their men, families, and neighbors, are far from perfect. Yay!I felt like an invisible third friend, in on their plans, and enjoying the nonsense. This is great fluff, very well done. and, okay, it's a tad dated, with landlines and VCRs, but that didn't really detract. Needless to say, but just saying, the premise of how the errant spouses are dealt with requires suspension of belief. There is a nice sex scene--nothing you haven't done.I loved the huggable men, local color, southern gardens, chicken salad, crabbity mother-in-law, kids with attitudes, cocktails and wine. Enjoy!
