I love this gouge. I had to turn down a huge blank of alder for a cane and this gouge breezed through it. It was stable, heavy enough to handle a huge job, and comfortable to use. I'm a 5'6" tall woman, and not really very strong, but this gouge was a piece of cake for me to handle. It came sharp and stayed sharp. I wish I had gotten this one a long time ago - I never realized the difference between the gouges I had been using and a really good one until I turned this last cane!

This is my first big roughing gouge and I love it. I'm just getting into woodturning but I was a machinist for well over 20 yrs. before I had to retire due to a blown disc in my lower back. Now I'm getting a small workshop set up and tooling up a new Jet 1014 Pro wood lathe. So when it comes to tools I can tell the good ones from the crap. This is definitely one of the good ones. It took a bit to get a good edge on it with my new Tormek. Which tells me that its made of good hard tool steel that will hold an edge for a while. Standard rule of thumb when sharpening tools. The harder the steel is, the longer it takes to get a edge on it, and that means the longer it will last before it needs it again. The handle has a good feel to it and is big enough around to be comfortable in my big hand and makes it well balanced too.Overall I think I made a good buy and I'm very pleased with it. This is going to be one that I will get a lot of use out of and will be in my shop for a very long time. If your looking for a new roughing gouge I highly recommend that you spend a little extra and get this one over the cheaper ones.

This is the best gouge i have ever had. Ok fine it is a simple tool but it is well made and does the job at a great price.very good for the pro and for someone just starting out in lathe work. You can spend more if you want to but this tool is great. The handle stock is smooth and long enough to rest on my hip for nice controlled cuts. and this tool was ready to go right out of the box. a real must have to fill out your gouge collection.

I had been using another brand of tools to turn with when I stumbled across the Crown tools. The first tool I bought from Crown was a bowl gouge. It was huge compared to what I was using...made my former brand, who's name will remain nameless but has initials of RS, look like toy tools. I then went about replacing all my tools with Crown tools. Wow...what a difference. So I get this big Crown roughing gouge...it will hog material off like a bulldozer which speeds up turn time. I recommend giving these tools a try.

I've only used the gouge a few times but I like it much better than my old one. It is well balanced and seems to hold an edge well and the fat handle fits my large hands. Using the side edge I get a cut almost as smooth as a skew.

Make shavings fly. This thing is boss

Purchased as a present for my brother. Great item and a size which is not usually found in the UK.

I love this roughing gouge. Purchased 6 months ago and I use it a lot. Leading up to Christmas I turned a large number of both trees and snowmen from various hardwood branches, used this to rough out even through the bark it holds and edge well. I’ve also used it to turn a number of pens, and even used it to turn a bunch of antler and it held up well. This has become one of my most used gouges on anything spindle oriented and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy again

I bought this gouge as I did not have a large enough gouge in my set. It came very sharp and was a pleasure to use...it is big and does a great job...highly recommended.

This thing is a beast. Nice and beefy, easy to hold and tough. takes a ton of material off in a short time. I wouldn't go without one.
