Can I brew coffee in a seperately and then pour it into this dispenser or it must be placed directly under the coffee machine?

When the top is open, the height is 10.8 inches (27.5cm), so depending on what the clearance height of coffee machine is, you can make the decision. When the adjustable spout is in the retracted position (all the way up; not extended down) what is the clearance from the spout to the counter?
