A Surprising Tradition
I purchased this book and the accompanying "Is This Some Kind of Joke?" as a Christmas gift for my father, who has a notoriously sick sense of humor. Sadly, he claims the books are too much even for him and in fact seemed quite insulted that I expected him to enjoy it (honestly, I think he does, but refuses to admit it for some reason).Luckily, we are a flexible people and have adapted the two books into a revolving "gag regift" where we wrap and send them to one another every Christmas (presumably to hide away and shamefully giggle at in secret when we're in a mood to watch the world burn--or perhaps that's just me).Either way, "Should You Be Laughing at This?" and "Is This Some Kind of Joke?" have become a sick holiday staple for my father and myself, and even if he refuses to admit he enjoys the occasional guilt-laced chuckle begotten from even their quickest reading, I'm here to tell you I do and will again and again.I would definitely recommend this (or both!) book(s) to anyone disenchanted (yet still amused) by the world as we know it. At the very least, it'd be a hilarious Secret Santa gift--if you're not TOO in love with your job.You can find the accompanying book here: Is This Some Kind of Joke?P.S.The books themselves are of nice quality, having now survived five (soon to be six) poorly-packaged trips from Florida to Arizona and back again! Even if you find yourself too PC to enjoy the content, they'll look quite snazzy on a bookshelf.

Well, I thought it was funny as hell!
This is an adult book of cartoons that are as good as what The New Yorker prints, but without the American hang ups: the author shows us humor from Iceland and the title is appropriate because some of these jokes are in poor taste but as clever as Booth, Addams, Wilson, Thurber. I laughed. Out loud over and over. Because Adolf Hitler complaining that his bathwater is cold catches you by surprise. You're caught by surprise when a child is poached for dinner. Or a cat locks his owner in the rain. There are elements to cartoon humor and surprise is the top one. If you're uptight and take political correctness too far the purchase Shirley Jackson's new book. But if you're tired of tip-toeing around what to say to whom, buy this book.

It is important for a comedy book of profane and offensive ideas doesn't become book which is JUST profane. "Should You Be Laughing at This?" manages to challenge with each page, but it seems to sometimes forget that there needs to be a joke involved as well. Nonetheless, the dark humour does occasionally find its mark, delivering something which is both a guilty pleasure and somehow an enlightened insight as well.

and a lot was funny but not really my sense of humor
My husband really likes this book, so it's purpose for me has been met with 5 stars!I skimmed through it, and a lot was funny but not really my sense of humor. If you've got a dark, alternative sense of humor you'll love this!

You will enjoy this if you like very dark humor.
Incredibly dark humor, but very enjoyable.Though I didn't get about 10-20% of the jokes. I suspect it's due to the Icelandic origin of the comedian and I don't get them since I'm not familiar enough with the country.Still recommended.

The pinnacle of clever, dark humor
Oh man, these are by far the funniest comics I've ever seen. If you're a fan of very dark, twisted, yet incredibly clever humor, then this is the perfect book for you. If you're one of those unfortunate people who is easily offended and takes life too seriously, do not buy this book, because it will be the most sickening thing you've ever seen.

Very few cartoons. Short book.
Was surprised at how brief this book is. Wouldn't have bought. Most were in ONE article I read about the author.
