BEFORE TITANIC, T2, AND AVATAR, THERE CAME, "THE ABYSS!"
Twentieth Century Fox's "THE ABYSS" was an amazing movie, since it was produced and directed by James Cameron, some two years before "TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY" in 1991, and nine years before his Academy Award-winning "TITANIC" that he directed for Paramount and 20th Century Fox in 1997. when "THE ABYSS was released in 1989, It really didn't stand much of a chance that year because the main dominating movie at the Box Office was Warner Bros' "BATMAN". but in 1993, both "T2" and "THE ABYSS" came back to life, being released on then LaserDiscs as director's cuts, which changed the whole equation into an Impressive "second chance" for these two director's cuts, especially with "THE ABYSS", which used unreleased footage that wasn't shown in its original 1989 release, and it was more of an improved movie than ever before. 20th Fox also released the "ALIENS" director's cut that James Cameron directed in 1986, and that title also became an improved sensation with the unused footage. but "THE ABYSS" was still an original concept and a well-produced movie that was also well-written, and a well-collected cast headed by Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio gave this movie some really deep and powerful quality-a second life, and did that ever pay off! a visual treat with stunning special effects that only James Cameron can pull-off with such expert creativity, and it made this 1989 film such a great joy to behold way before the arrival of his 2008 "AVATAR" release. I seriously recommend "THE ABYSS" special edition because this was a rewarding joy to watch and treasure, and strongly worthy of a five-star review!

You get to pick which cut of the movie you want to watch on the DVD menu. This = :) for me.
Few people haven't seen this movie so I'll spare you that part but having both the special edition and shorter standard version on one disc rocks as the special edition has some fantastic added scenes but is very very long. So having a menu option for picking which is a welcomed sight. I highly recommend this. I think quite a few people would agree that this was a cinematic classic.

GR8 SERVICE!!!!!!!
I remember when my family and I had rented the VHS video years back from Blockbuster (Remember Them?) but I was bored while watching it and I fell asleep through most of it. But NOW that I purchased the DVD, I'm hoping to enjoy it this time. Plus, I hear that this movie is harder and harder to find so I just had to get a copy before it no longer became available. Just received it today. If H.G. Wells and Jules Verne were still alive and writting books today, I could imagine them writting stories similar to this.

Bummer for the price.
Man, pretty disappointing for the price. Need to be a little more specific on the special features. One would think for a movie over $30 that there’d be more than just the extended version of the movie and “text only” commentary. Major bummer for a price. Also, not a two-disc as advertised. Seriously, ZERO special features save for the extended version.

Classic underwater movie.
The DVD and packaging is 4 stars and very expensive for this format. No booklet inside, just a DVD. Some parts of the video are blurred. A product of not so perfect CGI. I have the Specaial Edition on vhs, but I can no longer watch it. I wish this was available on blu-ray.The movie is 5 stars. A very good underwater, sci-fi movie.
