Best Pill Cutter
I'm an APRN, not that we use pill cutters at work, but I've used many of the typical single blade tab splitters over the past 30 years and have had to deal with this issue with hundreds of patients when dose is reduced. They work well for most tabs but small or very hard tabs can be problematic. I recently started a new unscored medication that was extremely problematic so I had to seek a solution. I have to press very hard compared to other pills but this device splits it perfectly with none of the powder splinterings. Given the amount of pressure I have to apply with this device, it's no wonder that my single blade was destroying it. I think this is probably the best pill splitter ever made. You're probably wondering like I was if it's worth the extra price given you can get one for like $4. For me, it was absolutely worth it. The only error you could experience is from not centering the pill correctly. Perhaps some elderly or anyone with dexterity issues may have more difficulty vs. a single blade where you just shove the pill to the top of the triangle. I have found it quite easy to center. I rarely leave reviews but this is a genius design that I feel is a real innovation for this class of product. I will be recommending this to my patients as well moving forward.

Please Read This Review
I've been using pill splitters for years. They were cheap plastic junk that I bought at pharmacies that never really worked -- they would either crush the pill or split it unevenly most of the time. This splitter does neither. It works as a pill splitter should. Its very sharp metal edges (not cheap, thin razor metal) cut the pill evenly and cleanly most of the time. It is not 100% perfect every time but Very close to it depending on the size and the hardness of the pill. For most pills, it cuts them even and clean. It has never crushed or obliterated a pill. It is made of solid, coated metal with a thick plastic cover. And it's smaller than pharmacy splitters. It's a little pricey but well worth it if you take several pills a day and have to split some of them. By the way, I am not being compensated in any way to write this positive review -- like it should be.

Easier to make precise cuts, no crumbling
My dog needs a quarter of a pill of anti-seizure medicine (Keppra) three times a day. Before buying the EqualSplit, I had borrowed a couple of different pill splitters from my mom: one that can do multiple pills at once using a single blade pressed down from the top, and also the EquaDose, which is more similar to this EqualSplit cutter. The EqualSplit has both of the other cutters beat.I tried the multi-pill cutter first, but it caused a lot of crumbling of the pill. Not only is that bad medically with this medicine (it will be metabolized too quickly if it's crushed) it's just a pain in the butt to deal with the dust. Next we tried the EquaDose, and that was much better. Kind of fiddly to get the pill aligned in it so you can cut it straight down the middle; the rotational movement of the cutter means you have to put the pill at an angle to get the blades to make contact at the halfway point on each side. But with two blades coming at the pill from opposite directions, at least the pill didn't crumble like it did with the other one. Then, I bought the EqualSplit. It has all of the positive attributes of the EquaDose, and fewer drawbacks. The linear rather than rotational movement of the blades makes it much easier to line up the pill for an even cut. And the depth of the pocket is a little greater than the EquaDose, which means I can actually close the lid before cutting these large pills, even with the pills on their sides rather than flat. But I can also lay the pill flat with this cutter and still have confidence that I'm making a precise cut. With the EquaDose, I always cut across the shortest dimension of the pill, so that it wouldn't have to be at as much of an angle to get the halves to be even--which meant I couldn't close the lid when cutting these large pills, and had to use my other hand to keep pill pieces from flying. None of that is an issue with the EqualSplit.I never encountered this problem myself, but my mom has had the same problem with the EquaDose as some reviewers of that product have mentioned: fingers getting pinched when you squeeze it, on the side opposite the hinge. I would not think this cutter would cause similar problems, since it isn't a hinged movement.Overall I'm very pleased, having using this cutter once or twice a day for a week, after months of the same schedule with the EquaDose. It's less expensive, too!

Would be perfect if........
I need to cut a lot of pills for my two senior dogs. A recent addition is a huge oval horse-sized uncoated pill that I have to cut into fourths. My regular triangular cutter was useless, an uneven powdery mess and way too small to cut this pill. . So I researched different styles of pill cutters. This pill cutter looked promising. It was too small to hold the pill; but after a number of different attempts I found a way for it to work. Luckily, even if the entire pill isn't making contact with the blade, it cuts evenly. So it serves my initial need. But this may not be true of all pills this size and uncoated. What surprised me was the difficulty cutting a tiny diuretic pill. I need to use the point of a knife to get it into position, and it's still iffy. I get it to work, but it's much easier to use my old triangular cutter that is completely accurate for this cut. I know there were some reviews that said it was great for tiny pills, but so far I don't think it's worth the trouble.I'm happy that this cutter works so well on the large pill, although far from perfect. (only through trial and error - I almost gave up on the horse sized pill.) FYI, the pill measures 24mm long x 14mm wide. When I make the first cut with the pill on its side, I get a nice flat surface for cutting in fourths by standing it up on its side, not making complete contact with the blades and I'm unable to close the lid, but it still works. It's a nice sturdy piece of aluminum. It probably works great for most uses. But for my tiny and huge pills, it's a challenge, but workable.
