Follett is a genius
As the various characters were developed I had both positive and negative opinions as their personalities were very clearly defined. The movement within the book from one character to the next with their unique problems and life goals kept me looking forward to the next chapter. It was like reading 5 great novels within one.

Flight full of danger
Interesting plot with good character development. Many subplots tied together in exciting ending, little historical value unlike most Follett novels. Great aviation scenes and problems.

INTO THE EYE OF THE STORM…
This is definitely a riveting work of suspense and intrigue. Set in September of 1939, shortly after England entered the war against the Third Reich, it features the famed Pan Am Clipper. While I had heard of these transatlantic airplanes, I did not realize that they were actually airboats or that transatlantic crossings in them had to be done in stages. I found it quite fascinating to find this mode of travel intertwined in the intricate plot in this book. The reader will find a motley crew of characters upon this Pan Am Clipper airboat. From the titled upper classes of Europe to the working classes, from Nazi sympathizers to those fleeing Nazi Germany, from the young to the old, the mostly British and American characters keep the plot moving and the reader enthralled. Unbeknownst to most of them, passengers and crew, danger lies ahead. As they unknowingly travel into the eye of the storm, the stuff of which they are made will come through loud and clear. This is a very suspenseful and intricately plotted book that held me in its thrall from start to finish. I confess that the ending took me completely by surprise. The only criticism that I have of this book has to do with its few sexual encounters that struck a false note, as they seemed more reminiscent of today’s sexual mores than those of the 1930s. Still, it was not enough to make me enjoy the book any less. In fact, I simply could not put the book down! It really is a rip-roaring, good read.

Hop on Board for a Wild Ride
You’ve undoubtedly read a story of this sort before — a group of strangers, all with schemes and dreams, embark on a journey. It may be in the American West, like Stage Coach, or on a vast ship, like The Posiden Adventure, but the result is the same: love, betrayal, some will live and some will die. The setting of Night Over Water gives this story an added dimension by setting it on the eve of the Second World War, with the crew and passengers of the Pan Am Clipper a huge sea plane crossing the Atlantic. The cast of characters include a Jewish scientist fleeing from Germany, a gangster being brought back to the US for trial, a fascist Englishman and his family hoping to be picked by Hitler to represent him in England after the Nazis win the war. Then there are principals — the romantic leads who add a little sex appeal to the story.I found the well researched details of this aeronautical aberration to be of great interest. The Clipper was enormous, a grand hotel with a staff to match. It was certainly a far cry from the cattle car conditions of today. The most fun was following the plans of a hustling English jewel thief who had slipped out of town before being caught with a set of fine cuff links. On board the plane, far greater booty, a unique set of ruby and diamonds owned by the fascist’s wife. Naturally there are complications, in the form of the fascist’s younger daughter, a spunky but conflicted lass who represents everything the thief aspires to.Add to this romantic dance a businesswoman trying to win control of the family company from her double-dealing brother and a wife fleeing with her lover from her dull husband, and you have a lot of action in a confined space.Without giving any spoilers, the ending delighted me and is worth the whole long journey across the Atlantic.

Enthralling
I read in another review that someone felt there was too much sex and swearing in this novel. Well , this is a work of adult fiction, and adults have sex and they swear, sometimes at the same time!If you don't like a really well written, immediately captivating story, with characters you care about, who do indeed swear and enjoy a bit of nookie, I suggest you try another author.Ken Follett is a master storyteller and this is a great story in a classic sense. It has a proper beginning and a proper ending, not just a teaser for the next part. It's a standalone novel that will satisfy any craving for excitement, and carries along with it a touch of nostalgia for a time gone by.

Pre-war standards tested by 24 hours of thrills & drama in a flying boat on the eve of war...
These days we take most things for granted, including air travel, but I suppose once a upon a time trans-Atlantic flights would have been adventurous and romantic especially if you happened to be flying super first class in a massive half boat/half plane with your every need attended (think Concorde times 100 and then think again). And it's against this backdrop of romantic airborne adventure that Ken Follett unfolds a heady mix of thrills and drama that stretch and test the pre-war morals and behaviours that were to be wiped away for good in the days that followed. So this was my type of book and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. Ok perhaps the denouement was a little too obvious, and maybe in some ways it all feels a little too Murder on the Orient Expressy, but the Pan Am Clipper setting is great; the characters are a fascinating mix, the sort you only ever find between the pages of a novel; and the storyline is attention holding even if it lacks twists and turns. But all in all I thought it was great (and yes, as other reviewers have pointed out, there is a lot of sex).

Good book
Ken Follett never fails to entertain me with his books, this one is not different , I loved the setting ,and characters as usual are all very well crafted. Some sex scenes very graphic make this book for adult only readers that I think is a shame as the story could have been enjoyed by a younger range of readers as well.Overall a good book , 4 stars instead of 5 because the end was a bit rushed and lacked a bit of a kick to make memorable on my opinion.

Love for the Boeing Clipper mixed with a collection of 'start of WW2' personal dramas
The book more or less takes place over two days, the majority of it being filled with the flight of PanAm's Boeing 314 Clipper over the Atlantic, two days after Britain's declaration of war in 1939. The setting has a bit of Agatha Christie in it, with the difference being that you learn about the possibly dubious motives of the protagonists throughout the book, and the 'crime' happening towards the end, rather than the other way around.Fascist sympathisers, arrested mobsters, Rusian princesses, movie stars, escaped Jewish scientists, and runaway thieves share the flight, all offering potentialities of being involved in the finale, and while you will not be kept guessing throughout (some clues are stronger than others), they form a sufficiently eclectic set of characters to make the book easy and exciting to read. Some aspects may be a bit dubious, with several of the passengers displaying personality traits much more modern than expected in the late 1930s, and most of them being fairly sexually adventurous. It also has some inaccuracies and not all the characters end up playing a role (so sticklers for detail may derive some less pleasure) but overall these issues do not sem to detract from the enjoyment too much in my opinion.Overall a good summer read, with sufficient action, good pace and readable language - in fact so readable that one will get through the 640 pages in no time.

Oh Boy!!!
This was an absolute cracker. I have only read one other Ken Follet book which I thoroughly enjoyed but this had me totally enthralled. I loved the characters and the last few chapters had me riveted to my chair. Could not put it down. Went back on Amazon and ordered several more of KF's books for my Kindle. Highly recomended
