The author manages to use the tradition of training bears to perform to explain the weird phenomenon or people wistfully recalling how 'great' it was under oppressive Soviet rule. In the process, you get to learn a good bit about the history of the tradition and see how its end affects the families who have practiced it for generations. If you want to see the world through an unusual perspective, it's a good read.

Written by a Pole as he ventures around the old Warsaw Pact nations, and you are unlikely to find any perspective even close to his. About the only negative is that this very perspective which makes it so useful also sometimes makes you madder then heck, like not seeming to care about bears having red hot iron shove through their noses.There's a peculiar style, a mixture pf present tense and past tense, which sometimes is annoying, and made it a bit of a slog sometimes. But it adds to the overall effect and I would hate to think of it being rewritten differently. How much is the author, editor, and maybe translator, I do not know, but I will look for other works by the same author.

This reads like a documentary. The "I Am a Camera" approach works brilliantly.I read this as a Kindle version and all of the pictures were at the end. The pictures are shocking and I am glad that I did not see them until the end of I may have stopped reading this book.The disenchantment by some of the downfall of the Soviet Union is, in part, because of the sudden change. Using individual stories in an artful way makes for compelling reading.

There is animal abuse around the World! This book brings it to light but the stories are severe. Compares to the sordid life in the areas and the many souls who live there. Not enjoyable but informative for those of us who care for the voiceless animals used to entertain with horror. Miserable lives for humans and animals!

The second half of this quasi reminiscence is more appealing to me than the first. This may be due to its human experiences, or the words spoken by these people. In any event, a nicely written story.

Strange little book on people who have lived under Soviet rule and are somewhat lost as to how to proceed in life, as in making a living, providing for family, etc. The creative methods employed to get around the new system and make a living are unusual.

Compelling investigation into the disturbing connection between oppression and nostalgia in bears and humans who have become conditioned to long for physical and mental enslavement although their life circumstances have become relatively liberated.

Those bears dance alone. Impossible to think this was normal only 40 or less years ago. Incredible stories about those bear keepes and their fate : death or illness. For every action there's a reaction, amazing histories related to all kinds of people: smugglers, Belitsa Staff, Russians in Estonia and everyone else. This book it's an amazing journey through Balkans and even Cuba. Quoting Sting, those bears dance alone at least today. Free at last

Erstmalig 2014 erschienen, aber auch heute noch aktuell. Ein bereicherndes und lesenswertes Buch.Im 1. Teil des Buchs begleitet der Verfasser "Four Paws", eine globale Tierschutzorganisation, bei ihren Anstrengungen, schrittweise die Lebensbedingungen von Tanzbären in Osteuropa zu verbessern. Die Bären sollen zukünftig möglichst artgerecht leben können, nachdem sie unter direktem menschlichen Einfluss ihre natürlichen Verhaltensweisen großteils verloren hatten.Die meist rumänischen Bärenführer zeigen wenig Verständnis für diese Maßnahmen. Nicht nur hingen die Besitzer in ihren Bären wie an Familienmitgliedern, sondern wurde ihnen auch mit dem Verbot von Tanzbären ihr Lebensunterhalt genommen. Sehr emotionale Beschreibung eines Bärenführers, der nach dem Verlust seines Bären in Depression verfällt.Trotz aller Bemühungen seitens "Four Paws" steht am Ende die Erkenntnis, dass ehemalige Tanzbären selbst nach langem Aufenthalt in Schutzgebieten immer wieder in ihre alten Gewohnheiten zurückfallen, sich aufrichten und wie früher tanzen, obwohl sie keiner dazu animiert.Der 2. Teil lässt Menschen verschiedenenr primär post-kommunistischer Ländern zu Wort kommen, die nach gesellschaftlichen Umwälzungen in alte Verhaltensmuster zurückfallen. So verklären z.B. Kubaner die Diktatur unter Fidel Castro, bewundern Georgier Josef Stalin weiterhin als väterlichen Ministerpräsidenten von Russland oder verdammen Griechen während der Finanzkrise das Ausstellen von Quittungen als unvereinbar mit ihrer Kultur.Die Herstellung einer Analogie zwischen Tanzbären und Menschen ist ungewöhnlich, wird aber überzeugend dargestellt. Tatsächlich drängen sich weitere Beispiele der jüngsten Vergangenheit auf, wie beispielsweise das Festhalten Polens und Ungarns an ihrem autoritären Politikstil oder die weit verbreitete Ablehnung von Corona-Impfungen in ehemaligen Ostblockländern als Ausdruck der Skepsis gegenüber staatlich verordneten Maßnahmen der Vergangenheit.Insgesamt verzichten diese einfühlsamen Reportagen auf jede moralische Wertung. Es bleibt dem Leser überlassen, daraus seine eigenen Schlussfolgerungen zu ziehen. Ein bemerkenswertes Buch.

Vividly capturing cultural beliefs and older ways of life, this is both a fascinating and rather sad book.I picked it because of the cover in a random choice moment and, while not everyone's cup of tea, it is beautifully written and the words and structure created lasting images for me, which made it all the more engaging.An off-beat, but enjoyable read.

Bien escrito pero no es lo que se anunciaba. Entendía que sería un análisis en profundidad de las razones por las que los ciudadanos de muchos países que han estado bajo regímenes autoritarios, estarían queriendo volver a regímenes que provean orden aunque quiten alguna libertad. Pero 50% del libro es explicar el proceso de prohibición de los osos que bailan en Bulgaria. Y el otro 50% son una colección de anécdotas que no hacen a un buen análisis. Me venía a a mente la frase de los investigadores: "Data is not the plural of anecdote"
