Walkin'

As a Miles Davis connoisseur, I have collected many, many of this great musician's recorded work through the years. I caught on to Miles Davis in the mid Sixties when he was moving out of the hard bop style and moving into his inauguration of the jazz fusion movement with albums like "In a Silent Way," "Bitches Brew," "Live at Filmore East," and many others. Miles Davis has always had an incredible range, from whimsical light jazz to light bop to hard bop to the electric and post-electric era in his music.Because I became aware of Miles Davis at that particular moment in history I was not familiar with a lot of his earlier music. The series of albums on the Prestige label - including "Walkin'" - features Davis in a recording live format that is quite interesting. That is, rather than creating music from scratch specifically for the recording session, Davis recorded here with his working bands at the time. This is a unique opportunity to hear what Miles Davis and his bands of the time sounded like live.I find in this music with its overall sound and mood to be refreshingly cheerful and pleasant. That in no way detracts from the technical prowess that permeates the music of Miles Davis, the music of "Walkin'" included. There is a whimsical feel here, a sense of the ebullience of the time that these musicians spent playing together. The music that came later in the career of Miles Davis was perhaps more thought out and deliberate, more intentional. This music just flows freely and it is a great joy.You will really enjoy the pure joy and light nature of this music. If you love Miles Davis, you will love this music. It is truly an enjoyable experience to hear this pleasurable music and connect it with the great music that followed with Miles Davis and his subsequent bands. If you are just interested in some pleasing light jazz music, you will be equally satisfied. You won't be disappointed in "Walkin'."

One of Miles' best recording from the bebop era in my opinion. Like "Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet", I purchased this to replace an original vinyl that was not properly taken care of back in the day. So thankful the CD was made available.

I have the single of Walkin' on a double sided 45 record and wanted it on CD. Loved it when I bought it on record and love it on the cd.

The great jazz trumpeter/composer Miles Davis(1926-91) was struggling during the early 1950s and this album made for PRESTIGE was something of a comeback for him.Tracks 1-2 were recorded in New York City on April 29, 1954 with Miles(trumpet); J. J. Johnson(trombone); Lucky Thompson(tenor sax); Horace Silver(piano); Percy Heath(bass) & Kenny Clarke(drums).The lengthy blues 'Walkin'' and Dizzy Gillespie's 'Blue 'n' Boogie' contains fine solos from Miles, J. J. Johnson, Lucky Thompson & Horace Silver.Tracks 3-5 were recorded in New York City on April 3, 1954 with Miles on muted trumpet, Dave Schilkraut(alto sax) and the above rhythm section.All in all, this overlooked CD is an excellent introduction to Miles' early music.

Gia' il titolo dice tutto.. ed in effetti se lo si ascolta tutto di un fiato ci si rende conto che "ALL STARS" significa proprio questo.Con lui ci sono diversi artisti e le musiche sono pervase da effervescenze jazzistiche che vanno ben oltre gli standart abituali di Miles, io li reputo delle vere perle musicali, ma come faccio a dirvi di acquistare a scatola chiusa questo CD.Fatelo e basta, e ne rimarrete appagati.

Uno dei primi LP di Miles Davis che al tempo dell'incisione era (seppur giovanissimo) un musicista esperto e leader. La produzione precedente è composta solo da 45 giri perchè non era stato inventato l'LP, quindi un paio di pezzi (peraltro brevi) per disco.Un album meraviglioso che lui stesso definisce di svolta nella sua carriera.

文学でも音楽でも、その作品を体験するのに、背景などは要らないというのは、ひとつのアプローチの仕方として正しいが、背景や流れを知ることで、より理解が深まる場合がある。マイルス・デイヴィスの音楽は後者だと思っている。マイルス 関連の本を何冊も読み、周辺の音源も聴いていくと、マイルスが残した音源たちが、点が線となり、面に広がって、自分なりの理解ができるようになる。この過程がすこぶる面白い。マイルス のアルバムは、名盤と言われているものが多い。だからどうしてもリスナーは、とりあえず聴いてみるという、周辺から独立した音源として接することが多くなる。そして”なるほど”と分かったようなわからないような受けとめ方で終わってしまう。しかし例えば、この『ウォーキン』というアルバムが、マイルスが麻薬中毒から自力で生還した復帰一作目であることや、この時期のマイルスのリズム陣（ピアノ、ベース、ドラムス）がほぼ安定していたことなど、いくつかの補助線を自分で弾けるようになると、このアルバムの楽しみ方が変わってくる。アルバムタイトル曲「ウォーキン」は、この時期にの直前に興隆したビバップよりも20年も以前の、ルイ・アームストロング時代のブルース表現に近い。復帰アルバムの一発目の冒頭に、マイルスは、自分の様々な紆余曲折を飛び越した時間軸を設定したかったのかもしれない。これはマイルスの復帰宣言、「俺はまたジャズの現場に帰って来た」の声だと聞くと、納得がいく一手に思えてくる。オールドスタイルのブルース曲ではあるが、トランペット、トロンボーン、テナーサックスという３ホーン・サウンドは、マイルスが『クールの誕生』で生み出したソフトで都会的な響きを持つ。さぁマイルス のジャズ史上でも有名な名盤を聴くぞと勢い込む、１曲目のまったりとしたリズムや悠長な雰囲気のソロに、一体これは何だ？と思う。しかしイアン・カーは『マイルス物語』の中で、この１曲のために３ページを費やし、「このセッションの録音でマイルスは初めて、どこから見ても納得のいく１枚の傑作を生む」と高く評価している。一発目に非常に象徴的な曲を持ってきて、アルバムあるいはそれ以降の自分の音楽活動全体をひとまとめにくくる手法を、これ以後マイルスは『ネフェルティティ』などで何度か見せる。それはスタジオ録音アルバムを自分の存在証明の証として強く意識した彼ならではの特徴でもある。前口上としての１曲目が終わると、急速ビートの曲。溜めていた力が開放される「Bluue'n' Boogie」。３曲目「Solar」からは別セッションで、バンドのパーソネルも異なる。ホーンがマイルスのトランペットとテナーサックスのクインテット編成。マイルスはミュートをつける。この「Solar」は、マイルス唯一の自作曲なのだが、アルバムの中で目立たない感じに収まってしまっている。だが、この曲だけが独立して、カフェの中にでも流れて来たら、かなりお洒落に響く名曲、名演奏になっている。ケニー・クラークのブラシワーク、パーシー・ヒースのウォーキングベースワイン、ホレス・シルバーのピアノもしっかりまとまっている。４曲目は「あなたは愛がなんたるかを知らない」というバラード。マイルスのミュートも切なさを滲ませてマイナーな曲想の中を漂う。だが、後の「枯葉」で聞かれるような切迫性はまだない。５曲目もアップテンポの「愛するか、去るかして」で、『ウォーキン』は終わる。

中山康樹氏の本を読んで、聴いてみたくなり購入。まず、軽快な出だしにワクワクしました。麻薬を断ち切ったマイルスのイキイキとした演奏が〜といったレビューが多く書かれていますが、なるほど霧が晴れたようなプレイだな？と、納得します。ミディアムテンポのWALKIN'も最高ですが、他の曲も全て気に入ってます。JAZZを聴き始めて日が浅いので、マイルスは他に3枚ほどしか持っていませんが、その中で1番気に入ってます。日に3回は聴いてます！
