Pros:-Patch test was fine, strand test left hair in good condition and finally took the plunge a couple of weeks later, after struggling to find a good hairdresser that had legit’ reviews. Was apprehensive because another reviewer said it didn’t cover her greys but, it covered my white and silver hairs completely. I used Koleston perfect natural 4/07 to achieve a very dark (chocolate) brown, after reading a review saying a shade lighter might be wiser. Used 6% developer (decanted from a 1 litre bottle from another famous retailer with 3rd party sellers) and measured the quantity using a digital Salter scale (60g) to match the 60ml tube (a 1:1 mixing ratio). We mixed with a large application brush and mixed again after we thought we’d mixed it enough (recommended by a Wella specialist hairdresser). It got darker with more mixing. Applied to roots first then, mid lengths and ends (ends can be “most porous” according to pro’ hairdressers but, I don’t have thick hair so after applying to roots with a brush, just used gloves (no brush) to work the product in to the remaining hair divided in to four separate sections. Development time: 35 mins (recommends up to 40). Kept checking to see how dark it was going (didn’t leave it on long enough during the strand test and it left my white hairs blonde). The last 10/15 mins of development time saw the mixture go from mid-brown with an orange tint to dark chocolate brown. I rinsed with luke warm water, then washed twice with Kerastase bodifying shampoo and conditioned with Kerastase Resistance conditioner - left on for 15 minutes (my hair needs richer conditioner, even though it’s fine because it can be dry especially at the ends). I rinsed my hair with cool water to seal the cuticles and get more shine. I honestly love the new colour. My natural hair is very dark brown but, looks almost black except in sunlight where the brown is very obvious. This appears to be a dark, chocolate brown. It does stain like mad around the temples and forehead so we’ll be more careful next time during the root touch up but, it’s hard to avoid because professionals recommended getting the product on the scalp between sections. It cleaned off okay, except on my forehead but, that wore off after a couple of days. We tried a few hairdressers and found two who used Koleston perfect and the quotes plus, blow dry were in excess of £100 for each salon plus, inconvenient parking locations, time and energy spent getting there plus, hostile staff or staff who didn’t care including not listening to what I wanted and insisted on something else because of their own preferences. In the end, I saved a lot of time and money going for it at home. I probably spent £30 in total on products plus, an hour researching how to mix, apply, etc then going for it. My after care involved gently towel drying hair; applying One United Leave-In spray (sparingly, after rubbing between hands to warm it up); it was then gently dried with a hair dryer (hot but, at a distance); and we then used Olaplex No. 6 and Pureology Colour Fanatic combined to blow dry. Nearly used some shine spray but, honestly it didn’t need it - it looked so nice and natural. My hair is soft, smoother, very “natural” looking and in good condition. Glad I took the risk. I also wonder now if I can straighten my hair with Wella Straighten It because this colour leaves it in good condition. Will strand test and update here if they’re compatible (I have fine hair).Cons:-noticed it doesn’t have a true brown tone but, more of a wine red brown in good lighting. If you’re looking for chocolate/very dark true brown, this isn’t it. It also goes extremely dark (looks almost black) before the recommended application time is complete. Leaving it on for less time for a lighter finish gives patchy results. It may be that the wine redness came out after the second time using it. This could be unique to my hair but, I’ve never had this problem with other colour products but, whilst this is a negative I’ve also never had hair in as good condition as with this product. I’ll leave you to weigh up the pros and cons.

I am so impressed with wella koleston- my hair was black from using box dyes and I wanted to go back to my blonde hair- I bleached twice using garnier olia bleach (which I also love) and then I used this with a bit of added blue to tone my hair- it looks so amazing and so professional. I am really impressed with the results. I would highly recommend this and I will be using this from now on :)

This toner is amazing. I had a massive fail with some bleach and semi permanent pink dye at the weekend resulting in a partly pink, partly yellow, partly orange, partly peach, partly brassy and completely awful mess. Hairdressers have only just opened and chances of getting a rescue appointment slim. Some frantic googling and YouTube video watching led me to wella toners, which I have used before but not quite to this awesome effect. This toner does need to be mixed with a developer to work, I used a 6% (20 vol) which lifts by 2 shades, you can use 30 vol to lift by 3 shades if you prefer. Lightness wasn't the problem for me, it was colour. Tentatively applied to all the problem areas and finished up with the roots to avoid "hot roots". A total of 60 mins later from the time I started applying, I washed it off ans couldn't believe how well it had worked. I've not left an Amazon review before (or if I have it was so long ago I've forgotten) but have been so impressed by this I had to. Considering I've lifted and coloured my hair twice in a few days it's currently in great condition, soft and smooth and very shiny. Simple and easy to use and did exactly what I needed it to. Back to my almost natural colour. Won't be messing about with the crazy colours without professional help again!!
