Gordon Lightfoot - TITLE: The Complete Singles 1970-1980 - Gordon Lightfoot is a genre unto himself. Neither pop nor folk nor country nor rock, his music is unvarnished, direct, a statement from one heart to another (as Lightfoot has stated, "I like to keep things simple. I don't like to make them complicated"). And this uncompromising stance has not only made him a legend (particularly in his native Canada, where he is a full-fledged icon), but also, somewhat paradoxically, brought him huge commercial success (which, ironically, has in turn caused some to discount his prodigious songwriting talent). For Gordon Lightfoot never set out to be a "popular" singer-songwriter. When he signed with Warner Bros. And began working with producer Lenny Waronker, Lightfoot thought of himself as an album artist, and, indeed, the Lightfoot-Waronker songwriter-producer partnership (with a brief period with Joe Wissert as producer) yielded nine charting albums-and that's not even counting the compilations-highlighted by a #1 slot for 1974's Sundown. But, starting with 1970's "If You Could Read My Mind," Lightfoot also reeled off 13 Pop chart singles including 4 Top Tenners during the '70s, as well as a host of Adult Contemporary and Country chart appearances, which is again testimony to his ability to transcend musical styles. Now, Real Gone Music has for the first time ever compiled the A and B-sides of ALL the singles Lightfoot recorded with Waronker and Wissert for the Reprise and Warner Bros. #labels, 34 sides in all featuring all the hits and hard-to-find B-sides. Lightfoot collectors will find much to feast on here; the single versions of "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" and "Rainy Day People" make their CD debuts, as well as six other songs that appear in their mono single versions on CD for the first time (many of the early '70s singles were issued in both mono and stereo, sometimes one format for promo and another for commercial, "stock" 45s; we have used the "stock" version in all cases and gone with the one for which we had the best sources in those cases where commercial 45s were released in both stereo and mono). And, for the more casual Lightfoot fan, this 2-CD set provides an ideal, in-depth overview of the artist's "classic" period, peppered with one memorable tune after another. Remastered by Mike Milchner at SonicVision, with additional mastering and tape vetting by Aaron Kannowski, and annotated by folk rock guru Richie Unterberger, The Complete Singles 1970-1980 represents a key addition to Gordon Lightfoot canon and is just a wonderful listen from start to finish.

Gordon Lightfoot's Singles
In my opinion, Gordon Lightfoot ranks right up there with some of the world's best songwriters - Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, John Lennon, George Harrison, Justin Hayward, Tom Petty, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Rodger Waters, Steve Earle, and Bob Marley. His music throughout the 1970s was incredible! These 2 CDs contain 34 masterful songs and some of the best writing from his extensive musical career. I've been waiting months for this singles collection to come out and its been well worth the wait! If you're a fan of one of Canada's best songwriters, this singles collection is really a no-brainer.

No wrapping, back of case was smashed in.
Happily the CD's were fine and great as expected, the back of the CD case was smashed in. It was thrown into a box with a heavy glass jar which was only half protected and there was no other packing or air packs in the box. In shipping I guess the case got cracked...that or case was already cracked when put in the box. The box the items came in was not at all dented.

Gordon Lightfoot's golden singles, 1970-80.
I've had Gord's Gold in my collection for decades, in one form or another. It's all I ever really needed. This, however, was a gift purchase for an old friend who has been a Lightfoot fan for about as long as I can remember. Complete Singles covers his most commercially successful era (1970-80), in America anyway, and it was a big hit as a gift. She absolutely loved it, which made me very happy. But I'll still stick with Gord's Gold from back in the day. Four shining stars in the Canadian skies and highly recommended for any and all Gordon Lightfoot fans on your various gift lists.

Great compilation of Lightfoot's songs
I enjoyed every song on this set even those that I had never heard before! Includes most, if not all, of his hits but also some lesser known songs. Thoroughly enjoyed it and can't get a number of the songs out of my head.

Gordon Lightfoot is just the best!
Gordon Lightfoot is an amazing artist, songwriter and performer. These are all of the singles that were released during his career. They weren't all hits but they are all very good songs and these are remastered and sound amazing. If you like Lightfoot... you will like this collection!

A nice collection of Lightfoot's hits and near misses
How to categorize Gordon Lightfoot? Folks? Country? Not pop, although he's been close at times. I've heard Lightfoot on the radio (all kinds of channels) for decades, remembering quite clearly when I first heard Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (which actually got full-length play on FM back then!). In my LP collection I have a few records from the 80s, but that's about it, so when on a nostalgic kick a week or so ago I ordered this 2CD collection of Lightfoot's hits. When it arrived, I thought I would simply hit the few songs that I remembered clearly, and then file the CDs.I didn't work out that way. I started with CD 2, and while I meant to fast forward to track 3 (Wreck...) I got distracted and listened to the first two tracks, one of which I knew on hearing it. Then Wreck, and I just let the CD play. When finished, CD 1 was in the transport and, roughly to hours later, I'd been through the entire collection and enjoyed every bit of it. While Lightfoot isn't a household name any more, I knew more than half these songs quite well, and the rest were fun to listen to. A testament to one of the best songwriters and performers of his age, completely unrated by most. These tracks don't seem to be remastered, but the quality is fine. Lightfoot's voice is strong and clear, and the backing instrumentalists are nicely rendered. I compared a couple of tracks to the LP versions and they sounds identical.I suspect most people will dismiss Lightfoot's collection as just worth listening to the favourite tracks, but that would be a disservice to Lightfoot and the listener. There's some great stuff hear, and I enjoyed listening it the CDs immensely.

Excellent Remaster
Yes, do not hesitate: this is an absolutely gorgeous remaster of Gordon Lightfoot's singles of the '70's. Balance and space are delicious with no noticeable compression but the emergence of the bass contribution (usually Rick Haynes) is stunning. This leaves 2002's Complete Greatest Hits in the dust, likewise Songbook, never mind Gord's Gold, I or II.Please...please!... Warner Bros., please hand over everything you've got to these guys (Mike MIlchner and Aaron Kannowski) and get all of Mr Lightfoot's wonderful back catalogue updated. We deserve it! (You need the money!)

Nice 70's compilation to compliment the 60's compilation
I really enjoy all the great Gordon Lightfoot songs of the 60's on the compilation that I have ( 3 cd ). This compilation of his 70's material compliments it nicely. Be aware that the musical style is much different than that of the 60's which was more ballad with single acoustic guitar. The 70's songs have a lot more layering, electric guitar, drums, violins, etc., .....but the songs are good. Would recommend.

Great songs, great singer
There is well over two hours of brilliant songs, some well known, and others we heard for the first time. Lightfoot is beautifully recorded, and you can hear every word.
