Better than expected, less than required
This is from the perspective of an amateur player accustomed to a compensating, large bore, 3+1 valve brass horn. The plastic horn blows surprisingly freely in the mid-range, with acceptable tone, and not too different from a brass instrument. Lower range is reasonably accessible, and pretty much in tune using the fourth valve. The upper register, however, is tight and difficult. You won't want to play much above the treble staff.Valve action was good, as received, but the third valve began to have a slightly delayed return, after a modest amount of play. It probably would have responded to some oil, but I did not try it since I intended to return the instrument (and did). You might find this instrument to be more or less as capable as an inexpensive student horn, in brass. The plastic one offers, in my opinion, better low range and much worse upper range. On balance, the brass horn is probably the better choice (and possibly cheaper), unless you absolutely require the very low weight, and damage resistance, of the plastic instrument. It weighs about half as much as brass. Therefore, it might be a good choice for a very young beginner. I doubt it will satisfy more advanced players, unless easy-carry, and dent-proof, are high priorities. But try it for yourself. There is a generous return policy.
