The Concise Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church (Oxford Quick Reference)

Missing a lot of key basic terms and it's hard to search for terms sometimes without scrolling through every page. Other than that it's a useful tool.

It is what it is. Its a dictionary. It gives very brief descriptions of thousands of people, movements,etc. from church history.

The Oxford Concise series are invaluable if taking the first steps into a field, or if already involved as a quick source of information on an aspect not yet studied or you require refreshing on. Arranged in traditional alphabetical order with cross references signified by an asterisk (the danger being here that you can go wandering off on paths you didn't quite intend to; still such diversions can be quite informative in themselves)The subject matter here is covered in impressive depth; Persons- from both Old & New Testaments, saints, theologians and other notables; Histories of various movements; Definitions of terms; to name a few topics are covered in precise manner. Some quite intriguing ones turn up; I was not aware for instance that `brawling' was originally an offence of causing a disturbance in a church or churchyard.The detail is quite factual so you might not find a great deal of detail on the theological beliefs within the various movements or denominations, but the information of their histories and divergences illustrates how wide Christianity has become.There is much here to help clarify misconceptions or answer bothersome questions. In all a work that has to the potential to be a continuing source of information and interest because the wealth of detail supplied.Ideal for those studying Christianity, very important if you are a Christian for perspective and insight and also a welcome addition if like me you just like to have reference books around on all manner of topics.
