If you know how to use it, it WORKS
I suspect most who don't like the until don't really know how its to be used or the limitations. Its not a magic bullet and like every tool in my arsenal, requires a good understanding of the subject before a good result is possible except in the worst leaks. It worked as I suspected. If it were a magic bullet, I would have been happy, box arrives, levitated and points right at the nearest leak until I acknowledge it and then went looking for the next in one of MY items, stopping when I told it to as I am not giving away my magic beans, but.....

Works well
My only gripes are that you can't recharge the leak detector. You have to buy new batteries. And it takes roughly 90 seconds to calibrate itself when it's first turned on.

Great detection tool!
I purchased this for use in my job as an automotive technician. At first I didn't trust it, having always used the UV dye to trace leaks, but after it pinpointed three evaporators in a row without so much as a false positive, I was sold on it. It's a great tool, very sensitive, and easy to use. It will report any refrigerant leaks. However, caution is advised, as it is not discriminatory; it will go off with very minor amounts of refrigerant. Technique is the biggest part of using this tool. Just jamming it in the panel vents isn't the best way to find an evaporator leak. Like any tool, your brain must be able to use it properly, and interpret its findings. Once that's figured out, this thing will save so much time it'll pay for itself in quick diagnostic work.

There is no substitute
I've been in the HVAC business for close to 20 years and as a gear head have spent thousands of dollars on tools along the way. Buying the best tools for the job instead of cheaper knockoffs has rewarded me with success as well as saved me countless hours of time that could of been wasted trying to get by with inferior tools. I have purchased a few leak detectors along the way. It can be frustrating trying to find the right one as there is no clean cut winner if you go by the reviews. The Inficon version has served me best. It is my preferred detector due to its sensitivity is in that "sweet zone". Other brands have been too sensitive(Field Piece) or not sensitive enough(Tif). The purpose of the tool is to see if a leak is present, then pinpoint its location. At times I couldn't get within a few feet of the leak without the Field Piece sounding off, unable to determine which part of the hvac system is leaking, making it impossible to order a replacement part. I could only state there was a leak. There are hi/low settings on these things, I know, but the low setting, even on the Inficon, is useless unless the stuff is spraying out! So there is realistically only one setting to use and that's where the Inficon shines! I received mine in used condition, but instead of returning it, tried it out and it works fine. You have to know how to use these things or you will get frustrated. I can tell in some of the reviews the "tech" just didn't know what he was doing. The Field Piece still has a use in my tool arsenal. It's sensitivity is helpful when finding leaks in line sets behind walls, so if that's what you are trying to do, the Field Piece may be a better choice, but for pinpointing leaks on coils and other internal components, the Inficon will serve you well!
