- Invincible: The Ultimate Collection Volume 1

Invincible is a super-hero title in the midst of an industry that is filled with super-hero titles. I have been reading these types of comics since I was a kid...over thirty years now...and I decided to give this a try because it had gotten so many good reviews. I bought this volume thinking I might get volume 2 in a few months or so. I was immediately hooked on this title. The art is GREAT! The writing is BETTER! This book is (in my opinion) simply put: One of the BEST super-hero books EVER written. I compare it to the original Spiderman that captured my imagination so many years ago. The story is superbly crafted and the artwork jumps off the page and explodes on my corneas! I feel I should warn against letting young kids read this title due to some heavy amounts of blood during the amazing knock down drag out fight scenes. They are depicted in grisly detail and, while very bloody, are more exciting than most comic book battles. The hero of the story is portrayed realistically and as a college freshman aged kid, he faces a lot of hard decisions. Kirkman writes it like he had lived it...it is believable and he adds just the right amount of humor. I have already told many of my friends to go pick up this title, and I would definitely recommend it. The Ultimate Collection is excellent. BIG BOLD colorful pages, nice sturdy hardcovers, and sewn bindings that let you fully open the book wide so you can see every inch of these amazing stories. These are characters that I think will stand the test of time just like Spidey or The Bat. AWESOME STUFF!

I had never heard of Invincible before this purchase. It was recommended to me and I gave it a try. The story is very well written. The author is the author for the Walking Dead comic. If you like his writing style there, you will like this as well. This book covers the first 13 issues. The story is about the high school age son of the most powerful hero on Earth and his dealing with his now appearing powers. There are some twists to the stories and a little satire pointing at the JLA. There are two artists for the 13 comics. Both artists do an excellent job and unless you look really closely, you will have trouble determining which issue they switched artists. The book itself is extremely well made. Short of the absolute editions by DC, this might be the best quality book I have purchased. It is large enough to mimic a full comic book size. Pages are crisp, colors are excellent and there's an overall feeling of a solid book. At the end there a many sketches by both artists showing how characters evolved. If you're looking for a superhero story off the standard DC and Marvel path, this is a great book to start with. There are 12 books in this series (the comic ended its run and the 12 books cover the entire run). I can't wait to purchase the next book.

SPOILER FREE: Early warning that this comic definitely gets graphic violent-wise, so be forewarned. This is a fantastic comic book collection. It gives an enjoyable spin on some other, more common superhero stories. Thick and durable pages; the paper cover pages are even sturdy with a nice texture to them. The story itself is amazing and it has great art to go with it. The main character has a great story arc and there are definitely some twists along the way. This edition even has some additional drawings thrown in at the end (I’m covering one for spoiler reasons). The book is in perfect condition and is only 400 pages long, so it’s not to difficult to carry/read. Definitely recommend this! Enjoy it.

This series works for it's money, and it doesn't even work that hard because it flows, it's seemless, it gets the job done, which is keeping me entertained. I can't complain at all. Honestly, you could look at any superhero, mutant, fiction storyline period and say, "the high school teenager theme discovering her has super powers is so overplayed!" But it's no "oops" circumstance, tragic accident (chemicals, meteorite, getting hit by a bus and being rebuilt to become the '100 million dollar dork'), it's expected. The acceptance and normalacy of our main characters attaining powers is presented as boring and nothing to REALLY get excited about, which opens the beginning pages for a quirky, entertaining, and laughable introduction. It all presents a dynamic host of characters (I hate a stagnant host of storyline characters) that all present their own unique pros. Of course, not everything is happiness and rainbows. The storyline also has a great degree of tragedy in it, that once read through is enough to leave you sitting there asking yourself "why did it have to be this way?" But as the story continues to develop, Kirkman has woven a masterpeice of thrills and pure enjoyment. I took a gamble by purchasing the first 3 volumes due to a coworker having high words to spare for the series. I was a HUGE winner by taking the gamble, absolutely NO regrets.

This collection is simply wonderful! What a great story combined with gorgeous artwork. What is most impressive in the "Invincible" is the understatement, the simple approach to graphically telling a story that delivers a punch you feel in the gut days later. You'll love these characters, even as you start to see the undercurrents of their failings. But unlike other comics that can sometimes revel in dark morality, this one deftly avoids such cynicism and manages to maintain its humanity and sympathetic "everyman/woman" characters. But also, this comic is hilarious! The comedy/timing is spot on, and keeps the book an enjoyable read even in its darkest moments. I cannot recommend this collection highly enough. Image put together a GREAT book with lots of extras, beautifully printed and bound. This truly is the best format for the series to ultimately appear in. If you're like me and are returning to graphic novels and comic book collections once again, you can't go wrong with this one. It truly shows what the medium can do.

Before I talk about this particular book, here are a few things you should know about Invincible: * Invincible is written by Robert Kirkman and was created by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker. * The character first appeared in an issue of Tech Jacket - another comic written by Robert Kirkman - in November of 2002. The original issues of Tech Jacket are collected in this book: Tech Jacket Volume 1: The Boy From Earth (v. 1) * Invincible is published by Image Comics - a company built by and dedicated to comic book writers and illustrators. Creators who publish their work at Image retain full ownership of all properties they create. Because of this, in Image comics you will regularly see things that don't occur in books published by the "Big 2" - Marvel and DC. Namely, characters that die tend to stay dead, and the overall voice of the characters remains pretty consistent, and continuity actually has some meaning. * Invincible is one of the most popular comics published by Image. This comic and other comics written by Robert Kirkman have had such strong sales that Image invited Robert Kirkman to share in ownership of the company. He accepted. * Invincible is an on-going comic series that has been published on nearly a monthly basis since 2003. * Invincible story arcs have been collected into many TPBs. The first 13 of these all share titles with sit-com television shows from the 1980's. * Invincible exists in a shared universe with other popular Image comic book characters, including Spawn, Savage Dragon, Superpatriot, Brit, Youngblood, Shadowhawk and others. * Invincible's costume design features a large "i" on the front of it - mirroring the company logo of Image comics. This book collects the first three story arcs of Invincible, which are also collected (separately) in the books Invincible (Book 1): Family Matters v. 1) and Invincible (Book 2): Eight is Enough and Invincible (Book 3): Perfect Strangers , as well as an extensive sketch and cover gallery that is included at the end of the book. The book introduces the main character, his family, members of the super-hero team Guardians of the Globe, and establishes the primary conflict of the series. While the book starts out sort of slow, it really kicks into high gear by the end. Most people (myself included) who pick up this book notice two things about the art right away: it is a bit cartoony and there are pastel colors everywhere! While this style of artwork is not for everyone and may be a bit of a turn-off to some readers, let me just say this about it: The artwork style is original, it does grow on you after a while, and this style gradually shifts to a more common art style as the art team undergoes a personnel change-up. For the first several issues, you may get the impression that this book is aimed at a younger readership. Again, this may be off-putting to some, but just stick with it and you'll see a major change. It's a bit jarring, actually, when the book takes a sudden departure towards the end. Invincible has a unique flavor to it - both in the writing and the artwork. This book is a great introduction to the character and should appeal widely to comic book readers. Invincible is one of the hottest titles of this new century. As it was a slow burning low selling sleeper of a title in its first year you can forget getting hold of the actual comics on ebay or via your local comic shop as spare or unsold copies are pretty much non existent. The very best way to read this title is in this the hardcover form. It is certainly much cheaper than buying any other way and will sit handsomely on your book shelf ready and waiting for you to re-read and believe me with Invincible you will want to read the stories again and again. to put it plainly Invincible is how comics used to be only with Kirkman at the helm nothing cans be said to be old fashioned about the story telling itself. The story is deceptively simple our hero is the teenaged son of a Superman type character who gains his powers in the first issue and decides to follow his dad into the family business. Nothing however is as it seems and we follow Invincibles some times amusing and sometimes tragic first year. The artwork is not to my usual taste in as much as it is slightly sparse and cartoony however for this title at least it works perfectly no doubt that is helped by the superb colouring. One thing that should be noted however is that Amazon lists this book as having 400 pages that is not even close. The pages are not numbered but even a quick thumb through will tell you that the actual page count is nearer to 200!

I warn you now, if you continue with your purchase of this book there is no turning back. once you have it in you hands and break it open you will not be able to stop! In short, Invincible will consume you. Invincible is without a doubt the greatest superhero comic to come out in decades...if not ever! I had heard about the series for a couple of years and was already horribly hooked on another kirkman series, The Walking Dead, when I decided to give Invincible a try. I have now devoured all 7 Ultimate volumes and simply can't get enough. You will even have a hard time going back to the other heroes such as Spider-man, Batman or the X-men. this series is so fast paced and loaded with great character development, to know it is to love it. the art is also just as brilliant as the writing. It is easy to undervalue at first, but pay close attention to the character's facial expressions and I think you come to love the art as much as I do. i haev been reading superhero comics all my life. i so loved teh genre I wrote a book about it of my own, Titan: The Midnight Hour ,but now I just feel inadequate next to the likes of this. I truly hope to see Invincible in cartoons, movies, and merchandise soon. As long as Invincible is around I'll be reading it. the Ultimate collections are also a nice addition to any home library as they are big, beautiful books with lots of little extras in the back for fans to enjoy.
