Art: A Play

"Art"-- a very welcome discovery
An excellent English teacher in my junior year of high school in the late '60s had us read a number of memorable plays. We even went to see live performances, memorably an outdoor performance of "Peer Gynt"In my 70s now and in these days of Covid I've hungered to read scripts and--barring Shakespeare and Albee--have not found many others available in my local county library system. I realized I wanted to explore new-to-me playwrights. Reza popped up when I searched in Tony Awards listings. I learned that Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay were 2 of the 3 actors in Art's premiere performance, and saw that as a good sign! The 3rd was Ken Stott, but I'd never heard of him before. As an art and art history student, and seeing the eye-opening cover art for this book, my choice here was simply a no-brainer

A Masterpiece
One of my favorite readings of all time –– a microcosm of the "whiteness" theme prevalent throughout Moby Dick. All the while, it's quite clever and comedic.

Yvan Returns!
"Art" is a darkly comedic play about friendship and what friendship really means. Its three characters are all male and old friends. When one of the men buys a painting, the friendships between the three men start to unravel.I read the play three times to get a full understanding of what is going on. It's got a lot of intellectual language that might be hard to understand. But it's worth reading and it's got a powerful climax.

Best modern play I haven't read in a long time!
I loved this play... I love themes about friendship.. These three friends will argue over a piece of art. One of the protagonist basically can't understand why his best friend would spend so much money on a white canvas? I love the absurdity of the theme... But that's what makes the play so special.. Funny, deep, and moving.Would we still be friends with our close friends if our ideas that we have of them would turn out to be completely different? ?? THat is the question ;-)

Exceeded Expectations
I received the book in good time and in very good condition. There was a dedication on the front page, which I did not mind at all (actually think it gives books a bit of their own history) but maybe picky purchasers would like to know of those in advance. Thank you
