Rumi: Swallowing the Sun Paperback – July 1, 2013

This is my favorite book of Rumi poems. The translator is also the author of a wonderful text on Rumi and his life. While I love Coleman Barks, he does not read Persian and takes many liberties with the original poems. For a more faithful yet beautiful rendering of Rumi, read this book!

Great translation. If you want an accessible and true to the letter translation of Rumi, go for Lewis's translation.

When it is discovered that many so called translations of Rumi are in fact versifications of earlier translations - such as those of Nicholson, readers ask what did Rumi actually say; how much of this 'translation' is Rumi's and how much the alleged translator? One response to such questions is the publication of bi-lingual versions, which is fine if you can read Farsi, Turkish, or Arabic. If you can't you are no better off. What Lewis does here is provide a kind of half-way house. There is a lot about the metrics of Rumi's poetry, but the opening lines are transliterated to give one a sense of the sound, and the particular metrical form used. Lewis of course is the author of the most recent and much praised biography: Rumi, past and present, east and west.
