Perfect
Several earlier reviews mentioned condition problems, so I wanted to relate that my copy arrived in perfect condition. It was said to be shipping from Amazon, but according to the tracking it actually shipped from the publisher - at the Amazon discounted price. Assuming the earlier complaints were valid, it appears that the seller corrected the problems. I could not be happier with it. It is a beautiful book with fantastic maps, printed on heavy weight paper with sewn binding. No damage of any kind and no missing pages!

Amazing
Gah. I am so interested in geography. Esp the far off places. This was a huge buy but I am absolutely delighted with it. So detailed. Also comes with a cardboard sleeve. This baby is huge. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do

Impressive
A large, impressive atlas, perfect for coffee tables. Perfect for map lovers as well. Got it for my wife who loves to plan future trips with it. And speaking of love, she loves this atlas. That’s three loves.

Beautiful maps, although some regions lack detail
I have a very large collection of world atlases spanning many different publishers (DK, Times Books, Rand-McNally, Oxford, etc.) and five decades. Not having a National Geographic atlas in my collection, I finally decided to get one recently. While it is certainly every bit a comprehensive atlas, I was a little surprised at the lack of detailed coverage for certain key areas. The United States is covered in great detail. Even some state highway routes are denoted on the map, which is a unique feature I haven't seen in any other world atlas. The shaded relief is very well done. Additionally, non-geographical features like military installations are included.Yet, some very large countries like Mexico are given just one map plate, while small Caribbean islands are covered in exquisite detail. There seems to be a lack of consistency with certain regions. I love the fact the Hawaiian Islands get an entire page, but large parts of Europe and Asia are treated as an afterthought. The index takes up a great deal of the publication. That's because the font size is the index is considerably larger than any other atlas I own. This makes finding names easier, and the grid location system on these maps is very well done. Unfortunately, it seems National Geographic has devoted much of the book to indexing, and less of the book to actual detailed maps. When compared to the Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World, the National Geographic Atlas just doesn't seem to have the same level of detail. For someone who enjoys large atlases that really go in-depth on lesser known areas, I was disappointed with this atlas. Still, it is a gorgeous book with all kinds of interesting supplemental information about our planet, and even our galaxy. This book is a great educational tool and general reference volume, even if it may disappoint the hardcore geography buff looking for a more comprehensive view of our planet.

Best World Atlas period
It's sad Disney has purchased the NG, many of their first-class products have been discontinued. This atlas is one of the things not now produced. NG's maps, descriptions and publications were 1st class. I do not think current management of Disney is up to the task of keeping alive the 100 years plus of the organization. This atlas is the best one produced by anyone period. If you can get a copy, this is the one to have. There is a warm feeling of opening and page turning a real book, it's a wonderful thing to have this atlas.
