The Power of Poppy Pendle

Brilliant and Amazing Story and Imagery
Couldn’t say enough positive things about this book. I am a college instructor who teaches children’s literature. I read hundreds of books in order to review them and draw comparisons or discuss them in my classes with students. From the very first page I was hooked. The writing in this book is beautiful with the imagery. You can literally smell the smells of the baked goods, hear the sounds in the magical world, see the sights come alive and feel them all around you, due to an amazing writing skill of description and setting. Poppy Pendle as a baby can make rainbows and sparkles and bubbles in such a magical way that it was easy to relate to her. I love the message behind this book about being who you were born to be in staying true to who you are meant to become.Yes her parents in this book or a little bit harsh because they were those kind of parents that only care about having highly successful children who make them be proud parents and that’s all that mattered to them. Success success success. But they were not mean or abusive; just the fact they wouldn’t allow Poppy to do her hubby and real passion until she tried harder and put more effort into her which school. Eventually poppy runs away from home because her parents take away the one thing that she loves, and she doesn’t want to go to the witch school anymore. She has a transformation to go through until a happy ending comes around. I don’t really love the way the author resolved conflict with her parents at the end and I felt that could be much more satisfying. But overall I loved these books enough to immediately purchase the next two. I think anybody Who loves magic in fantasy, even adults, would adore this book. It's keeping the interest of my grandkids when I read to them.
Very descriptive and makes the kids think about what's next.

A joy to read aloud
This is one of the few hidden treasures that I've found for my precocious 6 year old. Though she can read, we read this one aloud together and I thoroughly enjoyed the time. A few times, after I had shut the book and tucked her in bed, I found myself reading ahead in anticipation. I love a few things about this book:1) The strong-willed, smart, female lead character (Poppy).2) The amazing message this book sends. Actually, make that messages. There's a lot we can all learn from this book, children and parents alike.3) The underlying theme of baking - it makes me want to bake delicious treats (and inspired my daughter, too!)4) It is smartly written. Let's face it - it's hard to find well written, modern books. Many authors dumb down their language to their younger audiences and it's just not necessary. Kids are smart. This author has a fabulous vocabulary and isn't afraid to use it.When we (sadly) reached the end of the next book, my 6 year old sighed and said "Is there a sequel?" It's just that good.

The power of Poppy Pendle
I am a seven year old kid and I read "The power of Poppy Pendle". I think it's a terrific book. I learned some hidden lessons from the story. The story was mixed with two feelings, first it was joyful then it became gloomy.Poppy Pendle wished to be a baker not a witch. But her parents wanted her to be a witch. Then next day at school she learned a new spell then while she was doing her home work she spilled her drink on her home work paper her parents got mad worried and Poppy's mother was not in a good mood so she started to argue. Poppy's dad tried to stop her mom but then Poppy used her freeze spell. Then her parents froze. Then Poppy became evil. She had a friend named Charlie. She and a baker made a cake and gave it to Poppy then she became good again and she also became a baker and kept her frozen parents outside and they melted and came back alive .

Wonderful book!
Well-written and very fun! This book was a huge hit for my 9yo and she's totally obsessed with all things Poppy Pendle! I love that the author included recipes for the treats that Poppy makes; we're working our way through and having a great time making them.

Witches and baking
Young witches and baking recipes...what is not to like? It was a stretch for my 8 year old granddaughter, but it made her want to read. Win -win I'd say.

My 7 and 9 year olds loved this book!
From my 7-year-old daughter: "So I really like it because it's about this girl who's very passionate about baking, but her parents want her to be a witch, and she thinks what's best for herself. It's a very nice book and if you want to read the book about her daughter, I would suggest reading Poppy Pendle first, because it has something you might know from Poppy Pendle in the next one. If you're looking for it, it's called The Courage of Cat Campbell."
