McCormickGolden Dipt Fish 'n Chips Seafood Batter Mix, 10 oz (Pack of 8)

I first found this in a famous seafood shop in Pittsburgh PA. The fishmonger recommended it as the best fish 'n chips batter you could buy. So, on his recommendation, I bought three boxes, along with the best cod fish ever.Imagine my disappointment when I couldn't find it anywhere in Maryland! My husband and I went to every large chain grocery store, and all sorts of little shops. McCormick doesn't even sell it online! But, Amazon does! So, we bought enough to last us for a while... at least until 2014.It makes tasty, fluffy deep fried fish. I follow the directions on the box precisely. Just add water - what could be easier? The batter is the perfect consistency, never lumpy and always light.I know we shouldn't eat fried foods very often, if at all. But, as a treat after being especially diligent about our diets, we like to splurge on foods that take us on a walk down memory lane. Fish 'n Chips does it for me. So, as long as I'm being "bad", I sure expect my food to taste good! McCormick's Fish 'n Chips batter doesn't disappoint.

I would have NEVER tried to find this item online, except, the grocery stores in my town, Elizabeth City, NC do not stock this item anymore. (Or, to be fair, I could NOT find it shelved anymore) Which is fine with me, as long as I can get my batter mix online.... A loss for Food Lion and Farm Fresh here.......Product is excellent for a beer-batter! Since I don't drink beer, I ended up buying a bottle of lager, or Corona, freezing that in ice-cube trays, et voila, take out 2 cubes, mix with the batter, (add some more flavor, salt, some onion, celery, pepper, and maybe Texas Pete Seafood sauce, ok, go easy on THAT addition, the veggies need to be run through a food processor, and added to the flour and beer mix, though absolutely not necessary) but, either way, you will end up with really fluffy fish, or chicken. The secret is the fact that the alcohol evaporates long before water would, so, the end result, crisp coating, and tender fish and/or chicken inside....Plus, the coating is never "overpowering" as you might find in some restaurants, where you might think you just ate a heavy crust, and wonder what might be inside.....Will try it next on crabcakes... Can't wait!!!!

A hidden delight, this breading coats many deep-fried vegetables when I deep-fry. We greatly enjoy it. Note, for Vegan/Gen12 compliance, you must get the Fish n' Chips breading from McCormick as they sell others, and they are not Vegan/Gen12 compliant.

So others complain about the stickiness of this batter which I did notice when attempting to fry my tilapia in my double basket fryer. The first two pieces did stick, however I learned that if I just held the fish with tongs and dipped it into the grease for a few seconds before letting it go that it didn't stick to the bottom of the fryer. The taste is consistent from when I used it a few years ago. However, it is a bit salty so I know next time that I don't really need to season my fish as much, but that is why one star is missing from my rating. Overall I am beyond satisfied as the batter leaves the fish crunchy and a little flaky.

Using this is the only way I can get fish down. I hate fish! This makes it palatable, though. I love this coating - never want to run out!

I have used golden dipt fish n chips for years to deep fry our fresh from Kentucky lake bluegills and yellow crooked neck squash. I highly recommend trying it, you won't go back to what you are using!!!
