I really enjoyed this overview of Canadian history. It's part of the Cambridge Concise History series, and in 10 chapters and only 330 pages, it's not a deep dive into Canadian history; however, I found it to be an excellent introduction. It begins with the movements of people to North America 15,000 years ago, and brings us to 2011. Of course that leaves out current developments such as the election of Justin Trudeau and the later election of Trump in the U.S., for more current affairs I'll have to turn to other books. The book has significant notes and further reading sections, as well as an index and numerous illustrations including photographs, paintings, maps, and more. It's well-written and definitely worth reading especially by those who (like me) don't know that much about our northern neighbors.

hOW THE FRENCH AND THE ENGLISH JOINTYL HANDLED THE COLONISING OF THE NEW LAND IN QUEBEC CANADA
this book is a must read by French people descendants which describe the hardships and discomfort which plagued them in the form of a takeover regime driven by colonizing methods that are near impossible to abide. this is a pure historical book in which the reader reads of the way it were, sometimes making use of unfair ways often using the vicarious activities and authority of the french clergy, com politic elect. which actually dominated the immigrants' daily lives. This book definitely describes the way it were and I have quite a few ancestors who.actually survived the abuses as they are detailed in the book. This book is easy and relaxing to read and it tells much of exactly what went on with the colonizing by the British cum French of their new colony in North America

A very detailed guide to the history and political formation of Canada
I was most interested in comparing how Canada came to be as it is today and how and why it is so different from the United States. I appreciated the insight into the mindsets and political processes of the provinces and how these molded Canada into it's present form.

Enlightening
I now know a hell of a lot more now than I did before. Canada is not Utopia and is faced with a myriad of problems like anyplace else. It will survive or fail but will definitely do it their way!

Good
So much better than the last Canadian History book I read! Enjoyed the emphasis on women’s role. Wish I had an addendum for the period from 2011 to the present.

this book provides an excellent and intriguing overview
Few of us Americans know much about Canadian history, this book provides an excellent and intriguing overview. Did you know that the Province of New Brunswick was created primarily from the influx of loyalists who departed the U.S. after the American Revolution? Great overview!

fascinating read
I bought this as a casual read to learn more about our neighbor, Canada. This is more of a college level textbook yet I am still very happy that I bought this book. It keeps my attention, not a dry read at all. I recommend this to all Americans who lack knowledge of our northern neighbor.

learned a lot
Well written and researched. I didn't know Canadian history was so involved. The author gives a good background to the French and British colonisation and the period prior to that too. This early history was the most interesting to me, as the latter part bring us up to the present era with a strong emphasis on political developments and would be more engaging to those living in Canada. But throughout the book there is a broad ranging analytical account of social, economic, cultural and political developments, including their effects on the existing indigenous population, with a good analysis of the consequences of a diverse growing population emigrating from Europe, and some from America, on how a nation was forged.

Excellent introduction to Canadian history
I knew little about Canadian history except for oblique references in other history books. This is a well-written book giving a good introduction to the history and development of Canada from the earliest times. The author's style is clear and easy to follow and she writes at sufficient length to provide a rounded picture of the country, without overwhelming the reader with too much detail. Already I find myself pricking up my ears when I hear TV news reports about Canada, as this book has given me much greater interest in the country and the issues it faces. A good read if you want to learn more about this very interesting nation.

Great book, informative
Great book, informative, comprehensive & well written. I took it on a two week trip to Canada, not knowing much if anything about the country's history. Perfect for gaining historical perspective of, & insight into the country over that timeframe (in between seeing amazing scenery!)
