Mr. Brooks [Blu-ray]

Best movie I've seen in a while
Stellar cast, fascinating story. Kevin Kostner and William Hurt are brilliant. Although there are few truly sympathetic characters, the story makes up for that. Can killing be as much of an addiction as alcoholism or drug addiction? For some people, perhaps it can. If you realize that is what your life is going to be, what do you do? What if you pass some mutated gene alone to your child that causes her to become a killer, too? So many questions, so few answers because there are no real answers. Brilliant writing. Superb cast. Can't ask for more.

A thoroughly engrossing cinematic experience, chillingly acted by Costner & Hurt
I don't usually like these psychological thrillers, but 'Mr. Brooks' drags one into its story. I found myself unable to turn my eyes away from the screen even for a second. William Hurt as 'Marshall' was superbly evil. Dane Cook was insanely credible as the eager 'student' to Mr. Brooks 'instruction.' Throughout all the plot twists and turns, Costner is cool, smooth as the efficient serial killer by night, corporate leader by day. Marg Helgenberger as the character 'Emma Brooks, the wife and mother to the twisted psycho killer and his daughter, provided a steadying foundation for the tale. Demi Moore, as the troubled, unrelenting detective on the trail of the killer, seems to always be just shy of brilliant. Ms. Moore plays her role far better than I would have supposed--highly believable as the driven daughter of a multimillionaire father. I could keep going right on through the cast one-by-one, but I shan't bore you except to say, 'wonderful casting, wonderful performances all.' This is definitely a five-star film!!!

Mr. Brooks has a wicked story to tell
Director Bruce Evans hit gold when he paired Kevin Costner and William Hurt as a serial killer and his imaginary alter ego. The intimate dialog between the two is brilliantly handled and and even full-blown conversations between the two are cleverly invisible to everyone else. Mr. Brooks has more creeps than the standard creepy movie, including the tension halfway through the film with a debate about whether Mr. Brooks should kill a close family member preemptively or wait to be killed. There are too many subplots to mention, but they range from Demi Moore's intense police detective character's bitter divorce to the value of Mr. Brooks having grandchildren. Almost all come to satisfying conclusions. Then there is an ending to die for. I'm not sure what film reviewers saw who rated this one or two stars, but for a movie more than a decade old, Mr. Brooks has more than stood the test of time for me.

amazing, and absolutely credible in a role where he ...
This movie is far removed from the "normal" fare of Kevin Costner. A successful businessman, father, husband, his "side venture" is murder. Costner plays the part to perfection. I was really freaked out! Kevin Costner is a superb actor and this movie, being so different from the roles he usually plays, proves he is multifaceted, amazing, and absolutely credible in a role where he plays the "good" guy and the "bad" guy with absolute perfection.

Seriously wacky and not quite sure of itself
I knew nothing at all about this film. It certainly draws you in and Mr. Costner and Mr. Hurt are wonderful as the flip sides of each other. Demi Moore is Demi Moore and it's an odd role - a cop who's also apparently a multi-millionaire in the middle of a divorce where the idiot hubby is trying to bleed her for as much as he can get. And then there's the photographer who has the goods on Mr. Brooks but only wants to blackmail him for the thrill of getting to accompany him. Where his story goes is just one of many unbelievably silly things in the film, including the sub-sub plot of the escaped prisoner that Demi sent up coming after her. I mean, what story are we telling here? Oh, and the daughter of Mr. Brooks who might just be a chip off the old block. The director kindly veers away from any overt violence until the final fifteen minutes, when he attempts and fails to become Martin Scorsese and do the end of Taxi Driver, with completely over-the-top gore. In the end, one wonders if the director/writer was just having us on, making a satire, or what. But the true oddity with this film is that despite all that it's kind of enjoyable.

William hurt is in it
but other than that, it is pure dime store novel lame-i-tudeok for killing time--but don't get me wrong...that is not to say it does not have any merit, as dime store novels are meant for killing time; but it takes time to get rolling and I don't think Kevin Costner was the best choice for the lead (although this thing is a star-studded cast for that time period).it starts out with loose threads that then get woven back together in the end, everything is interconnected (as is obvious if characters are introduced), all laid out as if it was mr brooks master plan all along, or maybe it wasn't, but you decide.

Mr. Brooks worth watch but feels incomplete to me
This is definitely one of my favorite serial killer movies. It's a great watch, you won't be disappointed, it has enough intrigue to keep you interested in seeing what happens. However, the ending has always felt incomplete to me. I keep googling it hoping I will see something about a part 2 being in development, but nothing. It just feels like there should be a continuation like maybe the father coming to terms with what the daughter is and handing the button off to her or father/daughter dual in some capacity. I just feel like there's so much story left to be told from where it ended. Who do we need to talk to? LOL

It sorta all ties in at the end
Psychopathic tendencies running in the family? That's an interesting premise. The story starts like a run of the mill serial killer movie. Then it starts throwing subplots like the the detective's divorce, escaped serial murderer, the daughter's unrelated murdering, and, most of all, Baffert who wants to partake in the thrill killing. They all seem like random fillers or forced plot as they unfold. I had to rerun the film to figure out how Baffert's stuff ended up in the hotel where Meeks was staying or why Brooks decided to kill Vialo. At the end, I decided that Brooks was toying with Atwood and that was sorta vindicated when Brooks called her at the end to toy with her.Suspend your disbelief and just watch it. You will enjoy it at the end.

"The performance of Costner's career"
I started watching this movie on New Year's Day 2010, in the company of other (unfortunately very noisy) people and never got the chance to pay the film the attention it deserved... Mr Brooks starring Kevin Costner as the titular character, is a 2007 film that follows a successful local businessman in Portland, Oregon who has a terrible addiction; that addiction being murder.Mr Brooks feeds his addiction and alter-ego (personified here by the brilliant William Hurt) by giving in to these urges and meticulously plans each murder, evading capture by the police and earning himself the moniker, the "Thumbprint Killer"So far, this sounds awfully like everyone's favourite carrot-topped killer, Dexter right?I'd suggest that this movie is not simply a Dexter clone but a smart little two hour movie with an anti-hero that's a little less endearing than Dexter but makes for compelling viewing and Costner as the serial killer is very believable. His portrayal of Mr Brooks is very human; a family man struggling to control his addiction and hide it from his loved ones, the authorities and the world at large. Empire called this "The performance of Costner's career" and I genuinely can't think of a role that he's played which has been more suited to his particular demeanour.I watched this with Mrs Milton and although she enjoyed the movie on the whole, the scenes of violence (although relatively few) shocked her with their graphic nature. The violence is not gratuitous and I would suggest to you that it is very much necessary to illustrate the story that is being told. Speaking of the plot, it is always fairly clear how things are progressing but you are never quite sure how things will turn out. Definitely a bonus.Negatives to this movie? Easy. Demi Moore. I have nothing against the woman but simply think she was mis-cast as the cop chasing the Thumbprint Killer while trying to contend with a messy divorce action at the same time. Many would say this movie isn't a horror... It's about a serial killer that appears for all intents and purposes to be the guy next door. I'd say that merits falling into the horror category. If you like Dexter, I'd wager you'll like this and I definitely recommend giving it a watch!

A pretty decent performance from Kevin Costner.
This film is about the Kevin Costner character as he plays a made up serial killer as he moves in with this family who don't know about his past. This film does have a lot of thriller elements to it and a few bloody moments. Possibly the best action performance from Kevin Costner in the last 20 years.

This film is absolutely fantastic. I've had the DVD since it's release so was dead excited when I ordered the Blu-ray recently. U couldn't wait to see it in HD in my 65 inch 4k. But when the Blu-ray arrived it was in Airfix kit form. Completely smashed to pieces in the poor inadequate packaging that would struggle to protect half a house brick. Completely unacceptable.
