Wow, really impressed - first impressions are excellent!
First let me say - DO NOT PUT KNIVES IN THE DISHWASHER!We purchased this 5" utility knife to replace a deteriorating Zwilling 6" utility knife that had been in service for about 20 years - the current comparable knife would be the gourmet line. Wow, what an improvement. We believe this older knife's handles started to crack because of it going through the dishwasher for a few years - before we stopped. The weight, fit and balance are confidence boosting and is a pleasure to use. The blade's aesthetics are nice and at arms length compares to true Damascus knives. The patterns seems to be laser etched. However I didn't seriously expect true Damascus that at this price point. The grip is beautiful and this part of the knife does compare well against the more expensive knives from Germany and Japan. The performance is excellent and it is our preferred knife when chopping medium to small sized items. We have several Zwilling Pro line knives and it compares well against those knives. Since it is new, it seems to cut and chop better, but time will tell.As a comparison to see if the quality warranted the higher price. We also bought (and returned) a Miyabi Hibana Rocking Santoku to compare. While this knife was beautiful and well balanced, we found the blade very thin and made us nervous to use it for anything needing some effort to cut.So happy with this knife we bought the 7" Santoku to replace the Miyabi!

Blade edge developed micro-chips
Good looking knife. Great handle and ergonomics but began to develop micro-chips along the blade edge. I take care of my knives, always use a wood or soft plastic cutting board, do not cut bone or frozen material. I have a number of 30 year old German knives and knives made in Japan that have never developed this problem. My guess is that their tempering process is making the edge too brittle. My suggestion is to pay a little more and get a knife actually made in Japan not one made in China of Japanese steel or design

Precious knife but not built for speed.
The craftsmanship on this knife is amazing. It's a peice of art. The blade is razor sharp and retains it's edge well.

Not Damascus, laser etched, but still a great knife!
The knife may be VG10 but it is not real Damascus (layers), it is laser etched. I pretty much expected that at this price range so I only took away one star for the laser-etched Damascus pattern. Hopefully, the cutting blade is VG10, since they did not tell the truth on the Damascus part. The knife is sharp, beautiful and well balanced. Very happy with it. Just chopped a whole onion with it as a test. It has a good weight/heft to it to slice through the onion but the blade is still very thin and slides through easily with good tip control. Cut onion 80% through on one plane and then turned 90 degrees to chop. Excellent control on the detail cuts on the first plane and I could make rows very close together. It seems like a great performer for the price. Just the knife I wanted for veggies. It is NOT a meat cleaver. I love this knife, let's see how well it holds up to long term use. TBD.BTW, I have attached pictures of a "real Damascus" blade and you can see how the layers change directions when the blade was ground. Look closely. BTW, the pocket knife was a gift and came from the custom knifemaker, Santa Fe Stoneworks.

Very nice and holds its edge
This is a very nice knife. It looks really very nice and it holds its edge...Remember that it is a 15 degree blade so keeping it sharp will require some skill and/or the right tools. But, if you are spending the money on a knife like this you likely already know. The blade looks so nice... I bought it as a Christmas gift, it came beautifully packaged, just as ALL Japanese products are... now I'm debating whether I should get one for ourselves.

Beautiful and efficient, just not real damascus
The media could not be loaded. This video of the knife is after having it for 5 months, which is why there’s so many scratches. It has held up pretty well. I’m a sushi chef, so this has probably done miles of cutting by now, and this knife certainly gets any slicing done without issue, provided you hit the whet stone occasionally.Factory sharpness was nothing to sneer at; for home use it should be adequate but the pros out there know sharpening after a few uses won’t hurt. For the price point, this is a pretty and efficient blade. That being said, I experimented to see if it was real damascus by attempting to re-etch it using coffee. After which, I’m pretty confident that it’s not, which did bum me out a little, hence the 4-star rating. In all, it’s still a great (and great-looking) knife that has withstood the test of time and wear, I just wish it were advertised as laser-etched rather than genuine damascus. I’d still recommend it to anyone looking for a decent sushi knife.

Fab and sharp
I was a little disappointed that it’s made in china - I thought I was buying a Japanese nakiri but frankly this thing rocks at $49. Super sharp, nice heft. A keeper.

Probably laser etched pattern but good knife
I'm inclined to agree with other reviewers, I believe the damascus pattern is laser etched. The pattern looks fuzzy, not sharply defined layers you would typically see with acid etching. I'm hesitant to say it is or is not "damascus" steel. Otherwise I do really like this knife. It feels good in the hand and handles well. It's a bit beefier than most other utility knives, more like a shrunken chef's knife.

Great Porduct!
I've been a professional kitchen manager for over 5 years. I have to connect with many ingredients and knives everyday. For this knife, I like it, looks great, I use it at home and professional kitchen where it gets roughly 10 hours of use 5 days a week at least. I have a whetstone I use on it on occasion and I use a honing stick on it more often it still cuts perfectly. I work mostly with chicken, beef, pork, and veggies where I sometimes prep for hours and it still isn't dull. If you're someone new to cooking looking to buy the best knife on a whim, this may make you love cooking after you get acquainted, it's heavier than some on the market, but this is the real deal. Worth the money, professional or at home.

Garbage steel
Knife looks amazing and feels great, the steel however is garbage. I honed it and had a razor sharp edge, sliced up some veggies and the edge rolled within 2 mins of cutting. DO NOT BUY if you're looking for edge holding capabilities. Save up and go with a good name (shun, henckels, miyabi, etc...)

Use a magnetic knife rack?
Great knife at half the price of a Japanese equivalent - China is establishing (buying) direct pipeline to end consumers instead of making knives for everyone else. This 8” chef has same belly in the blade as my pricey 7” rocking Santokus but you get additional 1” of point on the tip making it very versatile. The outer steel layers must be of austenitic stainless steel because the blade has weak adherence to a magnetic knife rack. Be prepared to store this baby somewhere else in your kitchen - thus the only 4 star rating I give it.

Great Price For A Great Knife
Every home cook should buy this knife. It is sharp and is still sharp after 2 weeks of using it and I cook everyday. Although made in China rather then Japan it is well made and for the price you really can,t go wrong.

Very sharp and easy to maintain with reasonable price
I use it for everything except big carving and chopping jobs. Solid handle, comfortable and good grip, very sharp and sturdy, sharpener included, high grade material, finger guard included, perfect packing and best gift to anyone. As soon as I opened the product I tested to see how sharp it was, it cut through carrots very easily and also a potato. Very well designed: the top edge is rounded to make a pinch grip comfortable, and the line across the top of the blade to the handle is level, which is good for scraping a pile of cut onions/garlic straight into the pan.
