Urban Quail-Keeping

Of the 4 or 5 quail raising books we've purchased from amazon or borrowed from library or friends this has presented the best balance of information. Basically everything a hobbiest needs to know from producung eggs from chicks, to how to humanely house and harvest full grown birds, to tips on bird selection for breeding and recipes for cooking. The quality of the content and writing is excellent with a liberal use of photographs to help demonstrate the insights and recommendations the author is imparting. Refreshingly the author provides numerous examples of low cost solutions to everyday challenges you face when raising these fabulous birds. Her knowledge and experience as a quail homesteader comes through loud and clear throughout the book. If you are considering raising quail in an urban environment as pets or for meat and eggs this book would be a great option.

This book is about a 4 hour read, it is a plethora of information, especially if you are a beginner like me. My husband and I are considering getting quail this spring and just weren't quite sure where to start. After reading this book, I am confident we can set up an enclosure for them, feed, grow, cull, and brood more quail when we are ready to do so. It gives you everything you need from start to finish, and even troubleshooting in between. This will stay on the bookshelf as a reference when we get our quail. Great book!

Checked thoroughly for a good quail book as I watch videos also. This is great! So much helpful information as I've been pretty new with raising quail. And the new babies are 6 days old. :)

This is a very helpful guide for beginners and definitely one for the homestead reference library. I feel very confident about beginning with a covey now that I've read this through a few times. I will remove one star for American readers because this is written by a British author. A lot of the information about local regulations etc will not be relevant to readers across the pond. That's less a judgement on the book and more wishful thinking that such a guide existed from an American writer.

Great book for the absolute beginner. So much is broken down and explained and photos - perfect starter book. Not likely a book to benefit serious/ intermediate and above hobbiests or professionals

This is a really good book. I'm a total novice. Got into quails by accident. From buying my first four adult birds to hatching my next eighteen, I used this book as a "go to" reference. From this book I had a recent hatch rate of 75%...not bad for my first time. I used it to guide me through raising my first four adult birds, to incubating two dozen eggs, to building a brooder. I'm sure it will serve me well in the future.

Not nearly as much information as i had hoped for. Lots of pictures that take up most of the text space in the book. Without the pictures, the book would just be a pamphlet. Was filled with general information, the kind of stuff one figures out on your own raising birds. Would be good for the person recieving their first quail chick.

This book was so easy to read and full to the brim of practical advice. The author covers every aspect of quail keeping and goes into great detail while doing it. I'd definitely recommend for anyone who is considering quail. I will be using this book as a reference for a long time to come.

The practical advice and explanation on the reality of quails in this book is ideal if you have no friendly advice on hand. I found it an enjoyable, well written and well illustrated guide, and there was no feeling of being left guessing on some topics. Excellent for the beginner to quails and useful for the experienced. A very good book which I am glad I bought; it has earned itself a lifetime stay on my bookshelves. I am not parting with it.

Shorter than I would've liked but excellent material on the subjects it covered. I feel confident enough to get some cages and begin setting up my urban quail operation after going through the book as I now have a plan and goal. Would recommend reading it if planning on actually raising your own birds.

I’ve bought a lot of books online that are information based. This one is really good. If you’re a beginner like I am, it helps answer some of the questions that I had. The paper had a really good feel, and I was able to write in the margins with the pen. Felt like a notebook from a friend with all the information I needed to start. I also like how this book has an opinion. There’s a lot of ways to do things, but this is how I do it…. Would recommend for anybody learning about quail.

This is a fine, easy to read manual teaching all you need to begin raising a bevy of quail at home. While the authors experience seems to have differed from mine at times no part of this book was without good merit and worth reading and considering. Certainly worth the purchase for anyone who wishes to raise these wonderful birds.
