American Pit Bull Terrier (Smart Owner's Guide)

I just acquired a rescued pit bull dog. 6 months ago if you told me I would have an adult pit bull dog, I would have laughed. She is a great dog and I just wanted to expand my horizons some more about them, so I ordered this book. But yes, I had knowledge and experience with the pit breed before getting the dog. This book is nice, but didn't fully have me going WOW!. I was a bit dismayed about the numerous photos of dogs with their ears cropped/cut. Why on earth do that? To me it just makes the dog look meaner and like a fighter. There is something adorable about a dog with ears flopping over. Still, I spend a lot of time at my local animal shelter, and pits do come in with ears cropped and hopefully someone would still adopt them, but to voluntarily do that to your dog just doesn't seem right. If the book had one or two pictures like that, fine, but there are numerous photos like that. Just my personal opinion I guess. Otherwise the book gives good advice on crate training, obedience training, house training and the like. It just doesn't go into a whole lot of depth if your dog is the exception and has trouble with some of those issues. It did talk about giving the dog a good diet, but then has a photo of a bowl of dry dog food that has the colored kibble in it to look like peas and carrots. Please, any high quality dry dog food, i.e. Acana, Taste of the Wild, Core Wellness and all the others, they don't add crap ingredients to the food to make it look like human food. Haven't we gotten past that? I did like all the great photos, some truly beautiful dogs. A decent beginning book on educating yourself about pits.

had trouble with first book we received but came with cds ect was very nice .But because of packaging and shipper it was soaked but was quickly replaced but not with the same value pack with the cdsbut very quick replacement and good book

A copy of this book should be sent to all the State offices in which the Pit Bull is banned in their state. Excerps of the article on how these dogs served our country should especially be sent to the idiots that proposed the legislation in the first place. I have long admired the breed, but reading about the history gave me a new admiration and respect for this true example of an American. We embrace K-9s from Europe and other countries, whose dogs are just as viscious, and more unstable than the pitbull. Drunk drivers and other impaired creatures on our roads kill and maim more people daily than all the pitbulls in the United States. I dont see the courts or any state legislature, banning these dangerous creatures behind the wheel of a car when they are caught and convicted.

An amazing book on Pit bulls. They really don't call it "smart owners guide" for nothing. Tons of great information on training, health, socialization, everything you need to know. I'm very satisfied and so happy to finally have it added to my extensive dog book collection. Great book!

This book was a nice start I g point for someone getting a APBT puppy, but not a lot of information on working with older dogs or rescued Pit Bulls. So if you're getting a puppy and need help selecting a breeder and things like that, this book is a wonderful starting point. If you are looking for breed specific training for all ages, looks elsewhere.

Interesting and easy to read. Provided plenty of facts and advice for my husband, who was terrified that he was going to somehow destroy our puppy.

This was my first time owning a pitbull and this book was amazing on tips for how to care for him.

Has plenty of information on how to care for your pit, it even has some home made dog treat recipes you can try out. May not be the book the committed breeder is looking for though.
