Westek MLC4BC Plug-in Motion Activated Control

Update: This time around I'm assuming longevity has improved and giving this motion switch the benefit of the doubt. Having said that, let me say it is a fantastically easy to install, works immediately and all you have to do is set the rotating switch to the number of minutes you have to set before turning whatever you have plugged into it, off. Perfect for garage lighting that turns on when you enter and off x minutes after you leave. Very please with this one so far. Fantastic appliance. I needed an under-cabinet fluorescent to come on whenever I took a seat in my office chair, which placed my legs within the sensor's range. It works like a champ and can be set to keep the light on from 1-20 minutes in several steps. I have another of these that turns on an incandescent light bulb whenever the laundry room is approached, and still another in the Garage (incandescent 100W bulb) for the same purpose. All work well. I am very pleased! 6/30/2014 Rev. This product does not hold up over time. Even with it plugged into a UPS it started to turn on, not in response to motion, and then not turn off after the set time period. At times, it stays on all night. I have decided that, after several of these, to go back to a toggle switch for light control, at least until I find a motion-actuated ambient light-controlled power outlet that works more reliably than this one.

This is exactly what I wanted. Super easy to set up, and the motion detection works immediately. Its a nice size. I used it to control overhead lights in my shed and it activates them if the door is opened.

I plugged this motion-activated control into my garage ceiling and into the device's outlet a hanging light rope to act as a guide because I suck at backing my car into the garage. Every time the garage door opens, it triggers the motion sensor and the guide light comes on! If the device were plugged into a wall, the range of detection would be what seems to be within a horizontal plane, which makes sense as you'd normally plug it in somewhere that intersects people's pathways. With it plugged into my ceiling, detection is a vertical plane which works out to be from the garage door in front of my car to right behind where I park my car. The packaging states that the detection range is 25 feet. Due to the garage door motor obstructing my sensor's view, the range is artificially restricted to 15 feet, but if I walk anywhere within the sensor's view plane or open the garage door, it triggers the motion detection, which is perfect for my purposes. There's a loud click when power to the device's outlet is activated. The sensor's power-on timer can be set to 4 seconds, 1, 2, 5, 10, or 20 minutes. I set mine to 20 minutes and it stays on for the expected time. (In the video the light blinks because that's what the light does by design when first powered on.) By the way, to clear up some people's confusion, this device does not contain any built-in lighting. The clear panel is the motion sensor. The motion sensor activates the electrical outlet.

We use this to turn on LED under cabinet lights when we step into the kitchen. They work like a charm. The first unit lasted 4 years. It became erratic, turning on without motion. Being an electronic device, I expected it to last longer. This the one star deduction. Ordered another and it’s been in use about a month. No issues.

It does what it says on the tin. I got one for some lights in my basement to help me when venturing into dark crevices. I don't have a three-way light but I have two ways to get into the space, so having the lights turn themselves off is very useful. I wound up buying a second one for the garage. In the winter I like to keep things out there to keep them cold but not frozen. Having a light pop on when you pop out works quite well. Most overlooked must have attribute of this device is the sweet cracker sandwich.

Was really hoping this motion switch would work but it turns out to be unreliable. Sometimes it would not turn off after the time selected on the back. After un-pluging to reset, it would work for a while and the stop again. Sent back for refund. Poorly designed?

The motion detection is good. I installed mine in a closet. One thing to keep in mind (that disappointed me) is: The motion detection is linial not radial in the Height direction. That is: if you install it on a standard receptacle (about 12" off of the floor), it is going to detect movement that crosses the sensor at 12" off of the ground. Example: I have mine installed in my closet at 15" high. When I move my hands into the closet, it will not trip. I have to walk into my non-walk-in closet to trip the sensor and light my light. Or I have to kick my leg to sweep the sensor area. It's not a deal breaker but I would have preferred if it tripped along the vertical axis. I still recommend this, just know what you are getting. It installs very easily (just plug it in) and it looks good.

It works great! It has been working over 3 months without no hassle.

I LOVE this thing. We have our outdoor string lights set up in our underporch area (main entrance with no built in lighting) and this motion sensor makes our neighbour's very happy! We use it in conjunction with a timer so the lights motion-sense on only during evening/early morning, bit stay off in the middle of the night. The radius of the sensor is nearly 180°, and it can sense movement all the way from when i get out my car on the street! (10+ meters away). Its got different time settings as well, which is helpful for if you just need it to go in and out of the house, or if u need it set longer to step outside for a smoke. The timer is a bit involved to change (need a small screwdriver and its not conveniently placed on the device) but other than that it works great! I highly recommend this product for people who want outdoor motion sensing lighting, but can't install built-in hardware (since i am renting this is perfect for me)

I plugged a power bar with a shop light and some rope lights in my garage. I never realized how convenient this was since half the time I am going in or out of my garage my hands are full. I feel like I got a ton of value out of this. I happen to have an outlet in the perfect place for this so others might not be so lucky. The range seems to be about 15ft and it does sometimes miss me if I walk by quickly. Every once in a while I have to wave my arm at it but it's usually good.
