An essential text for your Lenormand library
If you want to learn traditional Lenormand card meanings and interpretation methods and don't want a lot of modern innovations to confuse the matter, then this is the book for you. It's a compedium of the 18th and 19th century essentials. You won't get overwhelmed by card meanings for every eventuality. You'll see how the Grand Tableau was originally read. Plus there are appendices that explain the original German cartomantic meanings for the playing cards depicted, and the 1796 Viennese coffee-ground meanings from which the Lenormand cards were probably devised. You'll want to also get another book that offers a more modern approach to the cards, but I consider this book absolutely essential for keeping one grounded in Lenormand as it was read for more than 200 years.

Excellent resource for traditional meanings
This book is an excellent way to explore the historic and traditional meanings of the Lenormand cards. It cites original and historic texts and provides a list of noun and adjective meanings to aid in pairing. I highly recommend this book for anyone new to Lenormand -- and even seasoned readers interested in the original meanings.

Great little book!
I found this to be a great companion book to have with other Lenormand books. This book focused more on the history and traditional meaning on the individual cards. Overall, it was a great learning experience that has enhanced my Lenormand readings!!!

Best book on Lenormand symbols I have read over the ...
Best book on Lenormand symbols I have read over the last years! It brings back the Lenormand symbols to its pure, simple meaning. No mix with tarot and other cards / decks. Very helpful.

Short overview, but very useful
Anthony Louis's exploration of Lenormand symbology is useful for scholars who like to ask •why• certain Lenormand symbols mean what they do. He includes comparisons of meaning from older methods, including descriptions of the actions in the corresponding Game of Hope. This e-book was short, but worth the read!

Great Resource!
Anthony Louis has compiled a great resource for symbol origin and use, past and present. This is about the emblems/symbols; not about how to read the cards in combinations. However as mentioned, solid nouns and adjectives are provided. Only comes in an e-book.tho. Changed my rating to 5 stars bc I really am VERY pleased.

Importantíssimo para compreensão da simbologia do Petit Lenormand. Recomendo para oraculistas iniciantes e também para os que já são bem experientes.

Bello, ricco di storia e collegamenti
I'm Italian but I wanted to buy this little ebook in English to fully understand the history and meanings of this mysterious deck. I think it is the best text.

Scholarly work on Lenormand history - not for the beginner
This is quite a scholarly work by Anthony Louis in which he shares his researches into the origin and history of the Petit Lenormand card deck and how the cards were interpreted by various sources in the 19th and early 20th centuries.I would say it is pitched at an intermediate/advanced level. It is definitely NOT for someone who is beginning with Lenormand and is looking for basic information (see below for those who are).It starts by tracing the development of the Lenormand deck and how it evolved from a German card game (The Game of Hope) and coffee ground cards. (This is of great interest to those seeking to understand the origin of the deck but not really helpful if you just want to learn to read the cards.) Louis the proceeds to what constitutes the majority of the book - a comprehensive listing of the various meanings for each card under the headings: traditional 19th century meaning, core meanings, alternate meanings, adjectives, 1926 traditional LWB instructions, Vereingate Stralsunder meaning, mid-1980s DaveLuy, 1910 Dondorf and 1796 coffee ground meaning. This is a mine of information for those who want to understand the TRADITIONAL meanings of the cards and how they have evolved. Many respected Lenormand authorities believe that for accurate readings one should stick to these traditional interpretations. The book ends with notes on associations with playing cards. For those people beginning their journey into Lenormand there are better options for where to start. I would recommend something like The Complete Lenormand Oracle Handbook (Caitlin Matthews). This is a comprehensive guide and workbook (400 pages) to everything Lenormand; but its strength is also its weakness - it is so comprehensive that it might put a newbie off. You have to wade through quite a lot of material before you get to actually get to reading the cards. Perhaps a better option would be Andy Boroveshengra's book, Lenormand Thirty Six Cards. This is a much smaller volume (about 200 pages) and much less dense than Matthews. He uses the Near & Far method of reading the Grand Tableaux; this is only one option among many - Matthews discusses them all in detail.
