A clever sharpening tool
I've been writing with 0.7mm pencils for years, but I recently bought two 2mm pencils - an inexpensive Staedler and a Caran D'ache Fixpencil 884 - and I wanted to get a sharpener. There are other less expensive models than this, but I really liked the way this one looked. The base unscrews, and the sharpening stone can be pulled out to clean. When you put it back together, the stone stays firmly in place as you sharpen your lead. There's something that I find very satisfying about being able to see the lead being ground into a sharp point, and hearing the mildly scratchy sound, pulling it out, wiping the residue off with my fingertips and drawing a clean line. The sharpener is equally adept at sharpening the Caran D'ache as the Staedler, but the Staedler seems to fit exceptionally well, and almost attaches itself into the red intake piece with a barely perceptible "click" when fully inserted.I just started using it, but I'm curious as to how lead buildup will affect transparency over time and heavy use.

Works great!
When I was an architect student back in the mid 1970’s some one had one of these let sharpeners. They looked so cool and worked really well. I finally got one for myself & although I don’t feel “cool” because I have this sharpener, it does work really well!! Worth the long wait! My recommendation, don’t wait, if you still use these lead holders get one now!

Worth the wait for shipping
This sharpener is hard to find, takes time to receive, and is more expensive than most....still it is absolutely worth the wait and the cost because it is so interesting and does an excellent job. I love it!

Fantastic lead pointer. Super sharp point with less waste
More accurately, this is a lead pointer. I love that any piece of this can be replaced, if it becomes damaged. Hopefully, the company will continue to sell replacement parts well into the future. This is the best lead pointer I have ever used. It makes a very fine point, but is very gentle, so it doesn't damage fragile or soft leads. For wood-cased pencils, this allows sharpening a dulled pencil to a fine point but will not remove additional casing. The advantage is that you remove less core material (the graphite or colored pencil). So, for wood-cased pencils, this won't replace your usual pencil sharpener, but can reduce the amount of waste, and save you money. Also, since this is hand-operated and supports the pencil more than most sharpeners, it's less stressful on the pencil, which can result in less breakage. This is capable of putting a very fine point on nearly any size of lead or pencil, but may require some modifications for some sizes. You could purchase additional pencil support pieces (the part that swivels around the core), and modify them for whatever pencils you use. So far, I've gotten by without making any modifications, other than using a piece of folded paper towel around the end of some lead holders, to hold them higher in the sharpener, and prevent the lead holders from making contact with the grinding stone. If you've been using a sanding block to put a fresh point on dulled pencils, this will save you time. This is an excellent product that can potentially save you a lot of money, especially if you use expensive colored pencils, charcoal pencils, pastel pencils, graphite pencils, lead holders, etc., but it's a lead pointer, not what most people would expect when they read "sharpener."

I love it!
There's something of a learning curve, but now that I know how to use it I love it!

A great machine. I wish they were easier to buy. They are perpetually out of stock.
