Definitely one of the best filters I have used...
In just the past year, I have had no less than 6 aquariums set up at any one time. I have two 29-gallon tanks, one 40-gallon breeder tank, one 37-gallon tank, one 56-gallon tank, one 10-gallon tank, and two 5-gallon tanks. Whew!! I also have a few smaller "betta" tanks. The smaller tanks I use as quarantine or as hospital tanks when needed. In all of my tanks, except one 29-gallon, I have 2 filter systems running. None of my tanks have 2 of the same brand running together in a tank. I have Tetra "Whisper" internal filters, Tetra "Whisper" EX filters (two of these I got on clearance at Wal-Mart for $7.00 a piece, so I couldn't pass them up!). I have the AquaClear power filter, and I also have or have used the Wal-Mart brand, Aqua-Tech, filter system, as well as the Top Fin brand (Petsmart) system. And finally, I have 2 of these Marina S20 filter systems running. I am not fond of the Tetra brand because they seem to die suddenly and very prematurely, so I only use them as the 2nd or backup filter on my tanks. It's very helpful to have extra biological filtration media, or even the entire filter system itself, to use in setting up a new tank, or in an emergency if another tank's "good" bacteria get wiped out somehow. My best friend set up a new tank with some of my filter media and she was cycled nearly instantly.I generally don't use the brand filter cartridges once I've used the one that came with the system (unless I can find a good deal on them). I use filter floss/pads with no carbon or additives. I do regular water changes and vacuuming, etc. to keep my tanks clean. When I think about the chore of having to clean tanks, check filters, rinse filters, etc. during maintenance, I can truly say that the one filter system that I don't have to "worry" about or dread dealing with is the Marina S20. The reason is this: the Marina S20 is EASY EASY EASY to set up, maintain, and clean. When I plug it back in after tank cleaning, it primes right up and needs NO extra help from me to get it started. The Top-Fin brand system is the worst about not priming and having to help it along. And, surprisingly (or not), the AquaClear filter absolutely does not prime itself. The Marina S20, however, has no problem starting up. It is easy to disassemble, and it's also thoughtfully designed so that smaller fish or fry (I have Mollies so I know all about fry, and they are the main reason I have so many tanks, LOL!) are not sucked up into the filter. The Marina fits easily onto the back of the aquarium and it is not noisy. It also has an adjustable flow rate, from barely a trickle, to a moderate flow.In all, if I had to start over and only choose ONE system, at this time, I would choose the Marina filter system. Sorry about the dissertation on aquarium filters...hopefully will be helpful to someone starting out. For the price offered here on Amazon, you can't really go wrong.

Added to a 29 Gallon for some extra filtering - Perfect!
The first one I received I had to send back, the impeller made horrible noises. I exchanged it in the hope it was just the one that had an issue. The second one I received for the exchange works great! Barely any noise coming from this one.I have a Tidal 35 on the other side of the tank filled full of matrix. I wanted to run some poly fill, but it was sort of a pain doing it all in the Tidal filter. This filter works great for what I wanted. It is small, quiet, variable flow, comes with a sponge for the intake tube, pump is internal, turns over the tank in about an hour, and the basket allowed me to use whatever media I wanted. In the intake section, I put in some coarse sponge, in the second (middle) went the poly fill, and in the third I have some ceramic rings. Next day my water was crystal clean, exactly what I was hoping for with the poly fill.I would be hesitant though to put this s10 on an actual 10 gallon tank fully stocked, I would move up to the bigger s20 filter. The filter works fine, but has a low GPH rate. I would for sure buy another. Awesome at this price point.

Good Flow. Low Wattage = Low Heat
This is the best hang-on filter I've tried in my many years as an aquarium hobbyist. Super slim, low noise, low power, but still has a good amount of water going through the unit. The output comes down a slide with a lip at the bottom, that disperses the current more across the top of the water than in a downward fashion. Seriously, magnificent design. Very well thought out. Uses just 2 Watts of power at full throughput. Which is great for A) low power bills, and B) not adding excess heat to a small tank, especially during hot summer months.Read the reviews, and I think I can address any possible negatives I might run into. People have said it can hum once it's been on for a while. That is pretty normal for any type of powerhead motor over an extended time, and there are a couple ways to address this. Take it apart, and clean the impeller/impeller housing. This is a common cause of vibration. Also, put a rubber suction cup on the glass behind the motor to absorb vibration. My Marina S10 is currently quiet though, but I'll update if that changes and I have to use my 2 year manufacturers warranty. Worst case scenario (after rma), you could actually replace the motor with a different powerhead. Why, if you think about it, you could run a small powerhead on a normal undergravel/uplift tube, and disperse its output through the S10 using a piece of tubing. Or just park the S10 on top of an uplift tube. The filters are small, but like with all hang-on filters, you can use many different types of filter media instead. You could put a small bag of carbon back there. Or chemi beads. Or ceramic canister blocks. It's also easy to cut a sponge a little wider than the filter width in order to get it to stay between the filter supports. Use your imagination. The disposable filters that are sold for this unit are cheap too, and they work very well. So no problem if you don't want to bother with customization. This is hands down my #1 recommended hang-on aquarium filter.

Excelente calidad

THE BEST 10 GALLON FILTER ON THE MARKET.
Edit note: Many reviews have talked about how this filter vibrates and that is true, however, this can be simply fixed by putting a piece of sponge or any dampening material where the pipe touches the filter housing! I did this in the first week of owning this filter and it has not annoyed me since. Also, make sure the wire is not touching and covers/anything that can vibrate.I have had this filter for 3 YEARS, and it has never failed or let me down, even when I have neglected it. This filter has gone years without a deep clean of its internals and has never failed to deliver strong filtration of my tank. I have tried more expensive filters that are supposedly the best such as AquaClear for my other tanks, but somehow the S10 has outperformed all of them. There are many different filters you can buy but this one is simply the most reliable and the best looking by far. The motor is positioned inside the aquarium, it greatly reduces vibration and sound, also takes up less space outside of the tank. This filter is stealthy and looks great!Marina filter inserts are a pricey thing to keep buying, but they can be used for WAY longer if you wash them and reuse them instead of throwing them out. They have filtrate in them so that beneficial bacteria remains on them, so with a good wash they can last up to 2 months depending on how often you do water changes. With a properly initiated aquairum, I have left this filter going without a water change for a month and came back to test the water with perfect pH and nitrate levels. If you'd not want to spend on those filter inserts just buy some foam and your own filtrate and put it in the hanger, works just as well!TLDR: GET THIS FILTER IT IS SIMPLY THE BEST
