Swedish Detective Mystery!
This is the ninth book in this series. This case involves a stalker turned serial killer. Add in the fact that Detective Irene Huss has her on stalker. Is it the same person. One of her fellow detectives shows her the cyber stalker hate blog against her. Meanwhile , the investigation into the serial killer is at a standstill. Until he targets the wrong woman. And they finally find the connections to close the case. This is a fast paced roller coaster read. The audiobook is narrated by Suzanne Toren. She does an excellent job bringing this story to life.

Close your curtains!
Helene Tursten's latest Irene Huss mystery is even leaner and meaner than previous novels. While changes continue to occur in the lives of empty nesters Irene and Krister, Irene is under a very real-- and very creepy-- threat. When no connections are found between the victims, it is steady, dogged police work that wins the day. Never give up. Keep knocking on doors. Keep asking questions. Keep going over and over the evidence for that one tiny clue that will break things wide open. There's something to be said for police officers in crime fiction who are lavishly endowed with intuition, but I also admire a never-say-die attitude and plenty of hard work.Tursten does an excellent job of ratcheting up the suspense in this very enjoyable police procedural, and Irene Huss continues to be one of my favorite characters. The author also addresses a couple of points that drive me crazy not only in crime fiction and film but in real life. Whether in a vehicle or on foot, you should always have good knowledge of your surroundings. Know the neighborhood in which you live. Don't travel the streets wearing earbuds or with your face buried in a cell phone. And for crying out loud, close your curtains when it gets dark! Don't provide any- and everyone with something they can't resist watching. I learned the hard way: no matter how uninteresting you may feel yourself to be, there is always someone who finds you fascinating. Tursten is well aware of these things, and she's used them to write an exciting tale that can make your skin crawl.

Intense
I started reading HT a few years ago and the first book had me enthralled and since the books 📚 slowly waned my interest but this kept me glued 🙀 and I hope the rest of the series is this good. 🤓 Totally recommend this! 👍

Just not as good as the others!
Spoiler alert. One would think after reading this book and a few other by my favorite Nordic authors that strict Christians commit most of the crimes in Scandinavia. We have a scripture-quoting man made dysfunctional by his overbearing Christian grandfather (who may also have been an incestuous child-rapist), who deflects suspicion because he doesn’t smell bad enough. But, although this supposition is alluded to in the story, the personality of the murderer is never really analyzed fully. Maybe he is killing all these women to punish his dead mother? Or not?The red-herring character from Irene’s past is crazier than a loon, but is fully capable of stealing Krister’s wallet out of his locker without being seen, committing identity theft, and disabling the brakes on one of the twins’ bicycle. It just kind of strained credulity. Then of course, we have the major shocker. Irene deliberately causes the death of the murderer. One could argue that it was self-defense, because he clearly intended to kill her, but she had other options. She could have called for help—but no, her cell phone was dead. And she didn’t have a car-charger? How unprepared can you get? She could have run into the cottage and locked the door. She even acknowledges to herself that the murderer would probably not attack her with Krister present. But, at least with the murderer dead, the government of Sweden doesn’t have to try him, convict him, and imprison him for a few years.Yes, I was disappointed in this book. I hope the next one is back to the level to which I have become accustomed.

A serial killer strikes close to home
I've read and enjoyed all nine books in Helene Tursten's Irene Huss series. It seems, though, that in today's world it's becoming increasingly difficult to find ways of putting the protagonist into a position of danger... without making her/him look inept. In this story Huss finds herself alone in her car in a forested region of Sweden... trying to outrace a killer. For one who is supposedly trained to be on her toes, Huss is utterly unprepared. She doesn't have a gun with her and she forgot to charge her cell phone. On top of that, she and her husband decided that to install a landline in the remote cabin to which she is racing would be an unnecessary expense.Still, this story of a serial killer brazen enough to attack even the head of the violent crimes unit is one that kept me interested and guessing. From what I understand, Tursten has written one last entry in the series that will be available soon... and I'll be standing in line.

Another Serial Killer
Fortunately, Ms.Tursten is a talented writer who is able to breathe life into a very tired formula. Irene Huss is an experienced detective who is nearing fifty and facing significant changes in her life. A serial killer is on the loose and Huss and her family are being harassed. Are these two things related? The detective is not sure, but the possibility that they are is unnerving her. Tension is high and the investigation is making little progress. There are twists and turns, but they are not as well hidden as one might like. Still, this is a good, readable entry in the series.

I strongly recommend this book.
Helene Tursten's books are set in the Goteborg region of Sweden, they are police procedurals. Helene is an excellent author and her stories are captivating. Not only does she tell the story of Detective Inspector Huss's investigations and trials as a female police investigator in a male world, but also weaves in an enchanting story of her family. Excitement, drama, adventure, it's all here mixed in with the exotic Swedish background. Her first story is "Detective Inspector Huss". Read that one first. You won't regret it.
