I have a shell on my truck - will the bikes fit with the shell?

There should not be a problem with having a shell.

Will this work on the back of my fifth wheel trailer

We do not recommend putting any VersaHaul on the back of a 5th wheel or a camper/trailer. We have found that the added weight on the back of a 5th wheel, camper, or trailer tends to back-load the trailer, which may cause it to fishtail.

Can the optional ramp work on this carrier, and is there a place to store the ramp?

You can use the VH-55 RK or the larger VH-SPORT-RK. Both come with mounting hardware and brackets.

Will the size adjust to just one motorcycle?

If you buy a shorter 24" main tube VH-020 then you can rearrange the parts to make a complete VH-55 single motorcycle carrier. This carrier comes with a 36" main tube. Also please consider buying the loading ramp VH-55 RK.
