Starmark Pro-Training Dog Collar Large 21-inch, Humane No-Pull

I have used this collar on at least 20 dogs. Many of these dogs had no obedience, bad manners, and behavior issues that required training. The most common problem among the many has been pulling on the leash. This collar will do just what the dog needs in order to begin to end leash pulling and that is to be uncomfortable when it is pulling on the leash. Harnesses, harness leashes, "gentle leaders" and the like are merely gimmicks being marketed to those with good intentions, but lacking in knowledge about leash pulling and other unwanted behavior as well as dog obedience training. This collar is inexpensive, made well from high-quality materials and easy to use if the recommended sizing and fitting instructions are followed. This collar should always be used with the included nylon backup slip collar or some other type of collar. I use a snap-around collar for a backup. ALWAYS USE A BACKUP COLLAR! Pawmark sells a leash extension on Amazon with two snap hooks that works well to attach the leash to a primary and backup collar. This collar is effective as a general training collar for most dogs. I highly recommend trying this collar before spending a lot more money on a conventional metal pinch collar. The size of the collar is adjusted by adding or removing links. This can be a little tricky at first. However, there are videos that demonstrate how to do this properly. After a couple of tries, it is not hard at all. If you are unfamilar with pinch collars or have been exposed to the negative propaganda about them from the Dark Side, you should know that these collars are not painful nor do they injure the dog in any way if used properly. But, NEVER LEAVE THIS COLLAR OR A PRONG COLLAR ON A DOG FOR DAYS!! This is really a bad idea. I have read some of the less than positive reviews concerning this collar. Some of them are irrelevant as they refer to a different collar - with pictures included. Others are in the category of those unique situations such as dogs with very long coat hair, and dominant or aggressive dogs. This collar is probably not going to be as effective as a prong collar for specific special cases. The collar is a great first collar to use for most dogs. However, like other collars and tools might not be effective for some dogs compared to a prong collar. I use a prong collar for foundational obedience work and then switch to this collar when moving the dog to an electronic training collar. The small collar size is suitable from my experience for dogs up to 50 pounds or for dogs with small necks. If it is the case that you have to use less than six links for a dog with the large size collar, I recommend using a small size and adding links. You do have to take some time to read and follow the instructions and watch the videos on how to size and use the collar - especially adding or removing links.

I used this collar for the first time today. A few things about the collar itself: First, WATCH THE TWO MINUTE VIDEO. It shows how to add and remove links. It took a couple of minutes to get the hang of it. It was easier to unclasp than to clasp on when I put it on my dogs. The prongs are not sharp at all. Once you get the link undo, you can see how they connect. But seriously, watch the video. Now, about my dogs. I LOVE my dogs and would never think to buy a product that I thought would hurt them. I was skeptical about buying a collar that you pinch or inflict pain on them. I read a lot about this collar and was convinced that it would be good to train them with it. I have two border collies. My boy is two years old. He is a great dog. My yard is not fenced. When we are at home, I don't put a leash on him to go outside in the yard. (I never let him out alone). He comes when I call, he doesn't run off, etc. I had been using a harness to take him for a walk. He would suddenly turn into some sort of sled dog. He never stopped pulling. He pulled so hard that he would end up walking sideways. He also felt the need to 'herd' cars. Whenever a car came around, he would drop to the ground until the car passed and then try to lunge at it. SO, after I started out on the walk with the StarMark Training Collar, my pup started to do the same behaviors. By the time we got to the end of our walk, he improved soooo much. I learned to give him a slight tug as soon as I could see that he was eyeing the car. After he let the car go past without a reaction, I would call him back and give him a treat. He still wanted to tug me but it was only a little tension. He would stop when I stopped and as soon as the leash was loose I would give him a treat. My other border collie is a four-year old girl. When we go outside in the yard, I can not trust her to be off-leash. If you even mention the word squirrel, she goes wild. Her triggers are bikes, rollerblades, and other animals. Even though my boy pulls like a mule with a harness, I think she is more of a struggle when we walk. I was very concerned about putting this collar on her because she doesn't have as much meat on her neck as my boy. I bought the large collar and had to remove 4 links. For her, I am ALWAYS aware of oncoming bikers and skaters. For her, I would put her in a sit-stay until the bike would pass. She would still lunge. Today on our walk, I started the same way. She did lunge the first time. I was a little frightened but she was fine. When the next bike passed, I prepped her by giving a gentle tug and telling her to 'leave it'. She went at it a little, but a lot less than the first one. We passed several bikes and skaters on our walk. (I live by a lake that is well travelled). By then end, she totally ignored all bikes and only pulled slightly at the sight of other dogs. I am so pleased. I actually enjoyed walking with my dogs for the first time ever. I am sad that the weather is not going to be nice tomorrow because I am now looking forward to walking my dogs. Would I recommend this product? Absolutely YES. I just ordered a collar for my daughter's corgi. When I read the reviews about other owners and their struggles, I have to believe it is because they are not reading their dogs behavior before the lunging event happens. I am pleased how well it went for the first time using the product. I can not attest to the longevity or durability of the links but they do include a safety collar, which I used. If you are worried that your dog will break through the linked collar AND the safety collar, then you have bigger problems that need to be address with a trainer. The collar alone won't 'fix' your dog's behaviors. It is a great tool though.

I have a sweet but stubborn English Bull Terrier who has a difficult time remembering her manners on the leash when distracted (she is hypervigilant since losing sight in one eye). The Gentle Leader works well for her, but she hates it and paws at it while walking. I tried a collar with vibration and noise correction, which worked a short while, but as soon as she acclimated to it she ignored it. I was hesitant to use a prong collar, but she's really hard on my already painful back, so I was happy to see another option when I searched for them. This collar was cheap enough that it was worth trying, and I'm pretty happy with the results. I ordered the large and had to take 2 links out to make it fit (her neck is about 16"), though I could've taken out 3 and it wouldn't be overly tight. Taking it apart is easy; just twist and pull out first the bottom and then the top. Putting it back together isn't hard, but it takes a little effort and can be a bit rough on your fingers. However, we did not get cut or scratched doing it as some reviewers said they did. It's important to study it for a few minutes before attempting to add or remove links. Once you see how it fits together, it's easy. The collar is easy to put on and take off with the loop (unlike harnesses). We don't use the backup loop sent with it because it's pretty flimsy; we just put her other collar on and hook it in the leash as back up. So far it hasn't popped off, but I've seen this with metal collars as well, so better safe than sorry. It does put a limit on her pulling; she isn't pulling nearly as hard, and it doesn't take long to redirect her with it when she gets distracted. If she gets really distracted, as she does when passing aggressive dogs on our walks, I find that gently lifting her front feet off of the ground for just a couple of seconds usually settles her right down. Failing that, a quick jerk back always does the trick but seems to hurt her a bit. Otherwise, she shows no discomfort when wearing the collar. She does have short hair; I wouldn't think this would work as well on a dog with a lot of hair because the prongs are pretty short. As others have said, it's also nice that it looks like a regular collar so no one takes issue with it. I will update if this breaks quickly or shows any other issues but so far I'm very happy with it. If my dog doesn't get used to it and start ignoring it, I see no reason to order a metal prong collar as this does the job.

It immediately worked due to the fact that my dog would pull when I would walk him, he tried to pull me when we walked, and once he felt the pressure of the collar he immediately stopped. I highly recommend this for people that have low to no training skills regarding dog walking.

This is an EXCELLENT training tool, especially for small dogs. For those hesitant, the prongs are more annoying than harmless!! It's super lightweight and the perfect width. Not once have I been concerned about our dog escaping while wearing it. There aren’t many good options out there for small dogs (mine is under 13 lbs) so I’m really happy I found this one. If your small dog has a problem with pulling, look no further! Highly recommend.

The 15" collar is actually only 14" (including the string) around the OUTSIDE. It is 11.5" if you measure the INSIDE (because of the spikes). So if you measure your dog's neck, and it's 14", do NOT buy the 15" Collar for him without the extensions. The extension, is a 3" extension . This makes the 15" collar (which is actually 11.5") into a 17" collar on the outside, and a 14" collar on the INSIDE. Since my dog's neck is 14" there is no "pull room". The collar is snug on his neck. I need to buy ANOTHER Extension to make it loose enough to give a good tug, or to put it over his head without pushing and shoving, and fearing scratching his eyes out. I know it says "do not attempt to slide over dog's head", but to link, and unlink these is hard to do. They need to make it easier to snap it on your dog, by having one link a Carabineer, or something. When your dog is moving around, getting the correct angle to un-snap those links is almost impossible. It also would need to be a bit longer to have the play you need to bend the joints. It IS also Plastic, and seems like it would wear down after a few months of daily snapping, and bending. It seems strong enough when it's new, but I now have to wait for more extensions. :( I give it 3 stars because the measurements are misleading. -added later -- This collar is now our only collar we use. We had a leather collar, but he can slip out of it. The teeth on this catch his jaw, and he can not slip out of it. That is a good thing. But... It doesn't have the effect it's sold for. The dog still pulls like crazy when we walk him. I don't think the plastic teeth even phase him. The rope part should be longer, so you can get a good pull on collar. that may make it so it has more of an effect. He also realized if he pulls hard enough the links will pop, and he's FREE. We use this in combo with the remote shock collar, and are happy. He can't slip out of this, and the remote keeps him in line. But this collar does NOT stop him from pulling.

This collar is amazing. My wife and I rescued a 2-3yr old Walker Coon Hound. She had been on the run in the woods for over 2 months before a dog rescue group caught her. She was scared senseless, dehydrated and malnourished. We've given her our home and heart. She's made such great strides it's time to start training her. The problem was she was SOOOooo skittish to collars and a leash. Constant pulling and freaking out made walks a chore. After doing some research we discovered this collar. The collar is like a light switch for our dog. She's instantly at ease believe it or not. This dog after a few minutes of getting adjusted, walked w/o pulling. She stopped and started walking with just a very light tug on the leash. The results were amazing. I find myself actually looking forward to walking Lily. She seems like she enjoys it too! You do not have to yank this leash. It is not punishment. The dog will respond with just a very light tug on the leash after just a few min. The collar is very sturdy and can easily be adjusted by removing links or adding links. Measure your dog's neck before you order so you get the length you need. It comes with a backup choker collar made of black webbing. This is good if your dog is new and strong. It acts as a back up incase the the the plastic links separate. But honestly after a few min my dog did not pull. And she's a full blooded Treeing Walking Coon Hound. Her prey drive is incredible. Don't get me wrong, she raises her nose to catch a scent and she's eager to follow it. But a quick tug will redirect her. I'm very pleased with this purchase. I do recommend a decent sturdy non retracting leash to go along with this collar. Many can be found here on Amazon for not a lot of money. Don't waste time on the retractable ones.

I have a dog that pulls and responds to pinching. I tried choke collar but it didn't work, it made her cough in discomfort but she kept pulling. I decided to buy one of these as they are recommended for these types of cases. The collar fit my dog fine, had to remove two links to make it fit without having too much loose space. The collar worked, when the dog started pulling it instantly responded to the collar and stopped trying to rip my arm off. She walked like an angel for once. I could actually train her to have more efficient walks with me with a bike when I had more control over her. Every time I put the collar on her she immediately brightens up for she knows she is going on a walk again. The shape of the collar is great, the materials, not so much. It's made of plastic and the pieces that hold it together can snap off eventually. If you are a crafty type you might be able to make a mold out of one link and replace the flimsy bits with better ones. The collar that I bought actually had one broken link as the person who assembled the link used too much force when connecting one of the end links. The design works, the materials don't, and also if you have a large dog I suggest getting the extra link with it as well. Added two years later: Well nothing in this product is broken after two years, so I guess they chose their plastic well and I'll take the flimsy material claim back. I'm extremely happy with it. Now I'll get on my soap box about people who haven't tried this type of product and one star rate it because it's "inhumane". No, I would not put this collar on and let you walk me. No I wouldn't put this on my children. Neither would I put my children on a leash, make them poo outside and eat from a cup on the floor. This is an animal, carnivore, pack animal beast that is tamed over thousands of years. They do not have same social structure as humans do, they have no elected leaders or voting rights. When they do not like what another dog in their pack does they pinch it from the neck with their teeth. Mother does that to their pups and their neck has very strong muscles, kind of the type you have in your legs. When they fight, they go for the neck to show the rival they are stronger and get them to the ground. It's as inhumane as blowing bubbles in a fish tank; you wouldn't put your children in a fish tank, you wouldn't blow bubbles on them while they are there locked inside that glass. This product works, and my dog isn't traumatized by it. She loves it, every time I put it on her she knows we're going on a walk and is clearly happy and looking forward to it.

I have a 3 year old Husky-mix that has been a pain to train ever since he was a puppy, specifically on the leash. He's a lot stronger than myself so whenever he lunged or pulled, I would be dragged along. We had tried multiple training leashes in the past including pinch collars, gentle leaders, and different types of harnesses-none of these being successful. We bought this collar about 2 months ago and it has, hands down, been the best purchase yet. Although my dog still has the tendency to pull and lunge (we're working on this), this collar has helped a TON. I'm able to control him better and he reacts a lot faster, all while not hurting him or being too rough. I definitely recommend giving this collar a try!

It looks to be the same as what I already have, bought more than a decade ago. Those still work and are in good condition, but I wanted one with a quick release. Thanks Starmark for making these, for making training my dogs enjoyable for them and for me!

After a suggestion from my brother in law who is taking his puppy for training we ordered this collar for our dog …he was told by the trainer this is the best for not pulling and doesn’t hurt the dog ..it’s amazing! I placed it on my arm to make sure there would be no pain associated with the collar and to my amazement the pressure points do not hurt at all ..made all the difference…no more pulling 👏🏻
