Set in war-torn Eastern Europe, a band of battle-worn mercenaries undertake a dangerous mission into a no-man's land at the behest of a mysterious businessman. When they locate and secure a disused military bunker, they also discover a terrifying secret that has laid buried for half a century--and which they'll have to fight to survive.

A surprising movie for what it is, and well done at that
The first thing that caught my attention about this movie is the fact that the casting actually bothered to get actors with authentic accidents. None of them sound forced and artificial (and most films butcher a southern American, "redneck", accent). The next thing I liked is that you know what the mercenaries know, and nothing more. So much of the horror is implied through mystery. While this film is criticized for not explaining itself, that is actually the beauty of it. You get enough story to draw you in and keep you interested, but not enough to totally over explain it. Mankind's oldest and strongest fear is fear of the unknown. So many movies completely miss this today. Also the characters are not all over the top mercenaries, stereotyped in their roles. The movie actually shows you glimpses of their outlooks on life, and interactions with each other. Of course, that's a side note to the main movie but I did appreciate the attention to detail rather than making them mindless grunts to be slaughtered. (Granted, no one can argue they over developed any of the characters. But there is some substance there.) Overall I was impressed with the quality and atmosphere of the movie in general. You might be disappointed if you're used to big budget Hollywood, but you might also find a diamond in the rough as I did.

Good, gritty and realistic
I was plesantly surprised by this low budget thriller. A group of mercenaries are hired by a man to go into a war-torn area somewhere in Europe. He won't reveal his reason for wanting to get into the dangerous area, saying only that he is "an engineer". This comes into play later.Once there, the soldiers find an old underground bunker, formally used by the Nazis. No doubt freaky experiments were done, as evidenced by the medical equipment and a pile of bodies, one of them still living. Ok, I said 'realisitic' in my title, but as with any film of this genre, there are times when you have to suspend logic. Why the bodies never rotted away isn't explained. And when our ill-fated heroes manage to fire up a WW 2 era generator with relative ease, that stretches things a bit. But it doesn't take away from the story too much. Things soon go from mundane to nightmarish as the group realizes they're facing an army of the undead, created in part by the very object the engineer is seeking. The main flaw in this film is that it's very difficult to feel any empathy for the soldiers. The 'man', who organized the mission, is just in it for a chance to make money. The mercenaries seem to be more enthusiastic about getting the opportunity to fight and kill again. Sort of a 'bored with it all but what else are we gonna do' mentality. As their leader, Ray Stevenson delivered a fine performance as the war-weary ex-soldier who's just there to do a job and get out. Little did he know that he and his men would get more trigger time than they ever imagined...I won't give it away, but be forewarned there is no happy ending to this one, but it did leave it wide open for a sequel, which, from what I understand, is in the planning stages now. Funny that another poster mentioned "Shock Waves". As far as the 'Nazi zombie' flicks go, "Outpost" is head and shoulders above that one. Not for the kids or squeamish, although the gore that is shown is brief and not overly graphic. If you're into zombie horror films, this one should satisfy nicely. Very unique and well filmed.

This is one of my favorite movies. Unfortunately, when I tried to watch it, I discovered severe circular scratches on the playing surface. $22.00 better spent elsewhere. And to think it had even been shrink-wrapped and sold as "new". Unwatchable.

A squad of veteran mercenaries escort a VIP into a chamber of hell.
I've always thought this film is a jewel in the horror/scifi military genre. I first saw it in 2008. It has good acting, good special effects, frightening zombie Nazi monsters and a creative plot. One feature that I like in two sequences are the pseudo-WW 2 German black & white film "documentary" scenes which explain the purpose of this sinister Nazi bunker complex in eastern Europe, which the German SS abandoned near WW II's end in 1945. Another interesting aspect is the team of seven aging mercenaries with varying military backgrounds and service in different armies. Ray Stevenson does a great job portraying the world-weary leader of the mercenary unit, a former British Army NCO who's been in too many battles. Richard Brake is outstanding as he portrays the lone American in the squad, a former U.S. Marine turned soldier-for-hire.The interior of the WW 2 German bunker complex looks very realistic. Extremely well-done scary movie produced in Scotland.

Looks good and is initially creepy. Then it just fizzles out.
After a lot of forced tough-guy talk, a band of mercenaries and a scientist type guy are off to a hidden Nazi bunker that is not well hidden at all. This movie looks good, and the action is fun at first. The longer it goes on the more it becomes clear they didn't think out the plot too much. All the atmosphere they build up is dispelled once they try to explain the absolute nonsense science parts. When the creepy bunker parts are over, the movie pretty much is too. The group just does the typical lame infighting while trying to figure things out. Of course, they figure out nothing and the bad guys are practically unkillable leading to the rest of the action scenes just being the soldiers firing at a group of people who keep walking and it is just so boring then. Then we land on the bland ending and roll credits. This movie could have been so much better. It ends up only average and only just barely at that.
