Corner Gas - The Complete Series Box Set

We had never heard of “Corner Gas” until one bored Sunday afternoon we decided to chance it on amazonPrime. We were immediately hooked, and when this DVD set came out a year later, I got sets for ourselves and my folks. I would call this a Canadian “Seinfeld”. That is, each episode is about “nothing”. No big themes, no horrors of modern life or gruesome crime. This is character driven comedy of the gentle and hilarious sort. And, like “Seinfeld”, it is very much set in a particular place, just instead of New York City, it is the town of Dog River, on the wide open farming plain of Saskatchewan. Outdoor scenes are filmed in Saskatchewan, and the town of Rouleau is so proud of its affiliation with “Corner Gas” that it has erected a welcoming road sign cheerfully acknowledging its claim to fame as the fictional “Dog River.” In addition to all 107 episodes filmed (6 seasons worth, 2004-2009), this DVD set has bonus extras, not for every episode, but there’s as lot. As an example, I’ve included the fake Ruby’s menu that’s included with the first season. As you can see, season 1 includes the option of audio commentary on 3 of the 13 episodes, plus a Behind the Scene featurette and bloopers. Very highly recommended show. Silly in all the right wauys! Love love LOVE Corner Gas. So fun to watch and my entire family can enjoy it.The characters are crazy but enjoyable, and the plots are hilarious. A Canadian friend of mine, who also enjoys the show, has filled me in on some of the jokes that would be less-obvious to us Americans, like the "smells like burn toast" line and the following line that "he must be about to have a seizure" (based on a Canadian public service commercial); or the Canadian Fitness episode (she showed me a YouTube video of the real PSA and the episode became that much funnier). This boxed set is perfect. I don't recall if there are bonus features, but there are tons of episodes. I had been keeping an eye on this boxed set, as the price kept fluctuating ridiculously, and when it went back down I snatched it up. Glad I got it! Apparently you can find the episodes on YouTube now, but I love having them and being able to just pop in a disc and binge-watch.

My wife and I are Canadians and unfortunately remove the way to the US and a few years later this lovely series came onto the Canadian airway. There was a few places on the East Coast the dead show that but since we are on the West Coast we had no idea of the show was on the air. As we are going to Edmonton to visit a relative we have been to say overnighter hotel and we watch this television show for the first time. We were so blown away on how great it was and how well it was written and everything to do that we love the show and luckily it was at the holding fees until they have a bit of A marathon on the TV. The bad news was that this was going to be the final year of the show and so we had pretty much a mess. But the good news was we could able to catch up on everything real quick. Until now I've been trying to find places on the Internet that show that or every time I go to Canada we watch this and I've actually happened to buy one of the season separately. My wife knowing how much I really loved the show should try to get me to box that and she wants to for a while and she got a really great price and we both love watches most of this half of the season and we love watching behind-the-scenes all the stuff that come with it that you used to get the seat and will be watching this for years. This is truly one of candidates greatest treasure

“Corner Gas” is our favorite comedy series of all time. Unfortunately the first two DVDs have issues with freezing and skips. Maybe I just got a bad batch of DVDs. I’d just buy it again if I wasn’t afraid of getting another set of damaged DVDs. The 5-stars are for the series but not for the product.

I watched one and half cd's of this program. I really like Canada; have taken a 2 month trip by car from coast to coast, including a separate 6-week tour of Newfoundland/Labrador. I travel to get to know the people and spent time in each province to get acquainted with the personality of each. So I get the droll humor and general outlook and the "flat" scenery. However, this was soooo slow. The people of Canada (especially the farther east one goes), are wonderfully straight forward, open and wonderfully friendly, helpful, outgoing (all the superlatives in my book), and greatly entertaining. And while this program picks up on it a little (tiny) bit, it really misses the mark in conveying that adequately. Each province has its own personality and could have provided endless droll scenarios to play up those quirks. So much to love and adore going from province to province without descending into the tiring use of language and innuendos to fill in any blank spots. Intelligent writers should be able to come up with abundant material for a great series. To be fair, though, at first I liked the series and had it hopes it would get even better as the program and people developed. But the opposite was true. It started to get stale quickly and when it started descending into more and more foul language and over-emphasized innuendo ("He Has A Little One"), I thought, "Alrighty then. High-school fare, and not even funny at that." After the first few episodes, things started to feel labored to me and the stories dragged, but I stuck with it dutifully because a couple of posters encouraged that. But it failed to grab me. We all have our personal tastes and what we find funny and entertaining, and for me this isn't it. I feel a bit defensive for "my friends" all across Canada to be cast in this light, because there is so much more to delight in them than this series portrays. If this is going to be put in the category of something between Northern Exposure and Seinfeld (both brilliant and original) this one skims along the bottom of both of those. There isn't anything "brilliant". It might be a slice out of life, as are the two mentioned programs, but a really sub-par slice. And yet, put into the hands of a "brilliant" writer and director, I would love to see a series that captures the essence of people (in the small towns and country----not the city folk; they're a different breed). THAT would be great fun and lots of nostalgia for me. The purchase was a total waste for me. I bought the whole set, because one poster heralded it as GREAT family fare. I wouldn't want my family watching this one. It was posted there is very little swearing, but half way through the second dvd, there was more than a little and that was it for me. I just wasn't being entertained enough to deal with swearing (which I hate) on top of poor scripts or directing, or whatever. The whole set went to the landfill. My apologies to the environmentalists.

I binge watched this series immediately after receiving the full set. The dvds all worked perfectly and I absolutely loved the series. I found it very funny with very clean and innocent humor. I would recommend this series to everyone that has a real sense of goofy humor. I think there's at least one of the characters that all of us (especially those of us who live in small towns) can relate to. Even though I was sorry to see the end of the series I think it ended well and had run it's course. It's always sad to see a series, no matter how much you love it, to go on when it has run out of good story lines. This one ended at just the right time ... it was still funny and I miss it as opposed to being glad it was done. Now it's great because I can go back and watch on Prime without having to deal with a DVD player. It can't get any better!!

CORNER GAS is one of my favorite sitcoms. I say this as a U.S. citizen who only became aware of this hilarious Canadian show shortly after it went off the air. As soon as I saw a single episode I was hooked, and soon afterward found myself binge-watching. The show is proof that you don't need raunchy humor to do modern comedy (I'm not a prude doesn't enjoy crude humor in SOME shows, but I appreciate the skill that was needed for consistently writing jokes without "going blue"). As for the CORNER GAS DVD boxed set itself, it's a mixed bag, as far as the extras are concerned. The earlier seasons have some good audio commentaries, which are something that I'm always looking for. The later season boxes, however, ditch the commentaries, and have extras consisting mainly of a few bloopers, a single behind the scenes special (originally aired on CTV), etc. A little disappointing in that area, then. Overall, though, a worthy purchase. [NOTE: As of 2024, fans are still pleading for a DVD or Blu-ray release of CORNER GAS: THE ANIMATED SERIES, the follow-up series that ran four seasons (2018-2021). But as the years pass, chances grow increasinly slim (the "final act" in the story CORNER GAS: THE MOVIE, which was made before the animated series, but takes place AFTER the animated series... it's complicated... IS available on DVD).]

Just as Fawlty Towers is considered the greatest show in Great Britain ever, not just best comedy, the same can be said for Corner Gas in Canada. Started out by accidentally watching this thing at 3 a.m. after work one night on WGN. Almost immediately became one of my favorite comedies. It's kind of a combination of Seinfeld and Dick Van Dyke, if that makes any sense. It's something the entire family can enjoy without being boring. It's simply about a gas station in the country. That's it. Like any good comedy the writing has to be good of course, but the actors have to be good as well and they deliver...big time. I'll put this show up there with Seinfeld, Cheers, Dick Van Dyke, Community and News Radio. Once you watch a couple of episodes, there's a good chance you'll be hooked.

On most of the DVDs the subtitling is totally unsynchronised. The package arrived damaged.

I love everything about this show. The characters are likeable and pretty realistic, the comedy has a timelessness to it that makes for good repeat watching (not too many pop culture references or specific technology). I also appreciate that the humour is clean, and no violence or adult content that in most shows these days is meant to shock/disturb/titillate.

Pure, easy, simple, fun magics - even the commentary not seen before is even more insightful !! :) Everything about Corner Gas is an amazing, very easy ride through: . . . people's propensities/peccadilloes and personalities; the number of caring tributes and memes and respects to so many weaved into easy humors; the ingenuities/ideas, with no heavy topical in your face refrains; that I learned more about our Prime Ministers than the news ;) this for me is a real Great !! ease the days nonsenses away with real nonsense :) Thanks all, Amazing and cares to ALL !!

Delivery was good - it even came a little early. Bought it as a gift for a friend who really likes Corner Gas. He said the DVDs work, so that's good. Overall good experience.

Just as the title says the package was damaged from the seller. The Amazon package was not damaged at all. However the discs all work, and it was great to watch one of my favorite Canadian shows.
