I use this book to supplement when my second grader doesn't have homework and we both love it! Its simple enough to be user friendly, yet challenging for the student. All the material in this book is good, so you don't have to jump around searching for a page you actually want to do. I would recommend this book to any parent, teacher, or student.

This workbook teaches that understanding word construction and usage - as distinct from spelling proficiency or fluency - is the foundation of literacy.This 118-page book is broken into three major sections: Letter sounds, followed by word play words and, finally, narrative form exercises - the reading part of this skills-building workbook.It's a progressive approach that builds words up from merely being sounds to sentences. All the basics are covered in the first third of the book: Beginning and ending consonant blends; the hard and soft c and g; the silent consonant combos of kn, wr, and mb; the bossy r sounds; the multiple personalities of the long vowel sounds.The second third builds on existing words through the wordplay fun of silent e, compound and rhyming words, crazy contractions, prefixes and suffixes.The final third puts it all together in paragraph form using main ideas, time order words, supporting details, fact versus fiction and book basics.It's a brilliantly organized journey through the language landscape. This book has everything your child needs for school: the leçons are well built to fit the need of every child, simple and easy to understand, the practice exercises are elaborated to better assesses the child’s improvement and progress.

Bought this to help my son maintain and improve his reading skills over the summer. A few main things I like:1)The pages are attractively mapped out with nice grapics. The pages look more 'fun' that typical workbooks or school homework sheets.2)The content seems to appeal to my son as the subjects are more kid friendly topics than other workbooks we have. They reference things of interest and silly humor that appeals to him.Two things to consider:1)It is not the sort of workbook where there are 5 pages covering very similar concepts before moving to a new skill. I sometimes have to take extra time on one page and use it as a guide to make my own additional worksheet before he is ready to move on to the next page.2)Be sure to open the "look inside the book' feature before you buy and review the sample pages closely so that you can gague if it is right level for your child. Since schools vary in what are first grade skills verses 2nd grade skills I would not just go by the title. I got this for my son who just finished kindergarten, however this book is titled as being for 2nd grade skills. The school he is at really pushes them in kindergarten so he was ready for this book. If I had gotten the 1st grade book it would have been all review with no new material.I am happy enough that I will buy Sylvan books again and this book is better in skills covered, appearance, and in maintaining my sons interest that other books we have tried.

This is a great book for kids to get started in building their reading skills. I've tried several other books and I really like the content and the quality of the book as well. Definitely worth the price.

I got 3 of these books for my daughter to work on over the summer. Since kids loose over 2 months of information over the summer, and my daughter being one who falls behind easily as it is, I thought this would be a wonderful tool for her while she is out of school. She loves these books and she is also showing more improvement with her reading skills and now asks to read to her little brother and me. I am so proud of her and can't wait to get more Sylvan workbooks.

I really enjoy the design of all of the Sylvan workbooks that I use for my homeschoolers. This one is perfect for my kids. It is broken down into units that focus clearly on topics and have wonderful review and the end of each unit. There is just the right amount of repetition to each topic so that they fully understand it without becoming bored with it. It's bright and colorful with cute illustrations to help them stay interested. I can't say enough wonderful things about this workbook.

It's ok if you just want your kid to do something besides watch TV or play video games. Everything was a bit too easy. I wanted something a bit more challenging. My son thought it was for kindergartners.

My son is almost done this book already, and we just started the school year. It's one of his favorites.

My daughter loves this book! Be sure to have stickers on hand to reward them with a perfect page!
