The novella that first propelled Dazai into the literary elite of post-war Japan. Essentially the start of Dazai's career, Schoolgirl gained notoriety for its ironic and inventive use of language. Now it illuminates the prevalent social structures of a lost time, as well as the struggle of the individual against them--a theme that occupied Dazai's life both personally and professionally. This new translation preserves the playful language of the original and offers the reader a new window into the mind of one of the greatest Japanese authors of the 20th century. A poignant glimpse into the mind of a Japanese schoolgirl. Osamu Dazai's Schoolgirl captures the fleeting thoughts and emotions of a young woman navigating the complexities of adolescence in post-war Japan. Through her introspective observations, the novella explores themes of identity, social expectations, and the search for meaning in a rapidly changing world. Experience the world through the eyes of a perceptive schoolgirl as she grapples with self-doubt, societal pressures, and the desire for self-acceptance. This translation preserves the playful language of the original, offering a window into the mind of one of the greatest Japanese authors of the 20th century. Perfect for readers of literary fiction and those interested in Japanese culture and coming-of-age stories. Review: good wulaity - good Review: Fantastic short work - One of my favorites. Short but sweet. This is one of those books you will want to read in one sitting. It’s captivating but the stream of consciousness narrative can be challenging to put down and pick back up the next day. I think about this book all the time

I feel like I may need to reread this
I got into reading a lot earlier this year. Mostly I think because I wanted some supplementary texts. I've been studying Japanese and I want to gain a greater knowledge of the good and bad of their society and how to they things. Perception which is shaped through culture, which is shaped through language should maybe give an idea of why I decided to read this. The idea of stream of conscience writing was new to me so I thought that was interesting. The story follows a schoolgirl on an average day for her. She lives in the country so she wakes up early and hops on a train, then after school returns home. It has a very nihilistic perspective on things (well the girl does) I feel I need to reread this one. It's a decent novella. I know the writer, Osamu Dazai was very nihilistic and eventually committed suicide. I feel like this story may even be a vulnerable one for him. At times it's like you're seeing things from his point of view, not the school girls.

Engaging and thought provoking
It was an excellent book that explores an unamed teenage girl's thoughts and feelings in one day. It's an engaging book that really captures the feeling of being a teenager. I reccomend this book if you like a thought provoking and slice of life book that makes you want to self reflect and I think if you are also a teen you will probably find this relatable.

Best book ever.
Holy moly, this book is absolutely amazing. It’s smaller than I expected it’s only about 100 pages, it’s small but it’s absolutely amazing. It’s so deep and interesting I don’t want to spoil it just buy it. It’s the best book I think I’ve ever read, almost on the level of no longer human by him too.

Not as expected.
I've read hundreds of books in my lifetime, but I have to say that this is the worst I've read to date and it's sad giving a book such a bad review. Love the author, but I don't know why this book was specifically groundbreaking. Maybe it's the way that it's translated? I don't know. The entire book was negativity and crazy emotions. Schoolgirl is bipolar or something. However, I do get it, as this book is supposed to be read from a schoolgirl's POV. I was a schoolgirl a few years back too so I understand the up and down emotions, but this wasn't something I really expected from such a famous book. It's a quick and short read, so I appreciate that. I don't think I would have completed it if it had more than 100 pages.

Outstanding and Insightful
This beautiful short story is a marvel. The narrator, an incredibly mature schoolgirl shares her thoughts in a straightforward and yet poetic manner. This is a must read if you want to get inside you head of another. Her naivety is overshadowed by her insight. Her lack of faith in her dreams is a bitter pill for her to swallow.

The author did an amazing job of showing how much a young girl can grow and find her own strength.
“This book was such an enjoyable read! The story captures the emotions, friendships, and challenges of school life perfectly. The main character felt so real — I could easily relate to her struggles and dreams. A touching and inspiring story that keeps you turning the pages!”
