The Bravest Cat! The True Story of Scarlett (All Aboard Reading) Paperback – Illustrated, September 22, 1997

Great illustrations and story for my 6 year old who loves cats. He loves to take turns reading this story for bedtime.

Our boys love cats. They also love books -- so this seemed perfect! The story itself is very well done - the only part that was difficult was reading that one of the kittens dies and the mother's picture in the back clearly shows the painful damage the fire did to the cat's face/ears. Its a little much for kids and they had many many questions. Glad we got the book and oh what a story!

I purchased all three books of Scarlett's heroic rescue of her little, helpless kittens trapped in the fire. Although all three books are obviously aimed at young readers, no one can dismiss or ignore what this brave Mamma cat did to save her children. I whole heartedly recommend this story for anyone who has ever questioned whether animals have souls, or if they are "like us". I would say they Do have souls, Pure Souls, and they can be our teachers on how to care for others.

Just be aware...a kitten dies in this story. I should have read out before reading it to my 5 year old. It upset her.

My 7 year old is just learning to read on his own, and is in that challenging phase in which the stories he can read on his own are generally too simple and uninteresting. The challenge is to find books that he can read - or that challenge him a bit - that also engage him. The Bravest Cat is a true story of a mother cat who rescues her five kittens from a fire. There is some sadness in the story also (one kitten doesn't survive) but also great caring that the mother was so brave in her rescue. We have two cats (and in fact once had to put a kitten to sleep) so perhaps this all had an even closer to home ring for us. Very nice story.

This is the best of the story books about Scarlett written at the pre-school to first grade level (reading level determined by publisher.). This book tells a much more complete story than the other one I reviewed which was the same level or perhaps lower. It's such a heart-warming story of motherly devotion that it's still treasured all these years after Scarlett nearly died rescuing her kittens. Details of Scarlett's injuries are not included since the book is for young children. I highly recommend it.

Children can read this tender tale for themselves and thrill to Scarlett's heroism against the horrific inferno that threatens her precious kittens. Scarlett is a true little hero and an inspiration to young readers. I was touched by her story and the sweet illustrations.

私がこの本で書かれている話をはじめて知ったのは、1996年に放送された、日本テレビ系列「午後は◯◯おもいっきりテレビ」の中のニュースででした。当時、番組を偶然録画しており、猫好きの私は最近まで録画テープを残していたため、記憶も割と鮮明でした。サブタイトルの、"The True Story ..." でピンと感じ購入した次第です。発端は1996年ニューヨーク、ブルックリンでのビル火災。幸い空きビルのため、人間の被災者はいなかったものの、そこで子育てをしていた野良猫親子が炎に包まれます。消防活動の最中、母猫は猛火の中から５匹の子猫たちを救い出しますが、自身も大やけどを負ってしまう。と、ここまでの話がTVニュースや新聞で人々の知るところとなり、私も冒頭の経緯でこの本の主人公「スカーレット」に出会いました。「スカーレット」というのは、猫たちが運ばれた動物病院で、その火傷の痕から母猫に付けられた名前です。その後、子猫の1匹は手当ての甲斐なく死んでしまいますが、スカーレットと残り4匹は徐々に回復、子猫たちの里親も見つかりました。母猫スカーレットには里親になりたいという1000を超える手紙が世界中から病院に寄せられますが、最終的にカレン・ウェーレンという女性に決まりました。カレンはひどい交通事故から回復してきた経験があり、スカーレットと共通するものがあります。ただ、彼女は、自身の事故後に飼い猫を亡くしており、それが「特別」なものでない限り、もう猫は飼いたくないと思っていたそうです。その「特別」な存在がスカーレットだったのです。本書はここまでが書かれています。猫の母性の強さにはいつも感心します。（普段はあまりに身近すぎて気に留めませんが）その後、スカーレットは2008年に亡くなったそうです。（Wikipediaより）

火事になってしまったビルに消防隊が向かうと、幸い人は誰もいませんでした。しかし、炎の中から飛び出してきたのは子猫をくわえた母猫。１匹を安全な場所へ非難させると、また母猫は炎の中へ…５匹の子供たちを助けるまで、母猫は炎の中へ飛び込んで行ったのでした。このお話は実話で、勇気ある母猫の子猫に対する愛情やこのニュースをＴＶや新聞で見た、世界各国の人々から手紙が届いた事などがやさしい雰囲気の水彩画と、シンプルな文章で書かれています。たとえ英語が分からなくても、挿絵を見れば母猫の勇気ある行動や、怪我をした猫達を心配する人々の表情など重要な部分は伝わると思いますので、お子様への読み聞かせにも、良いと思います。最後のページには、母猫スカーレットの写真が載っています！語彙500　総語数600　ＳＳＳ難易度レベルは１です。

ある倉庫が火事になります。幸い人はいませんでしたが、一匹の猫が出てきます。子猫を連れて…一匹、二匹…と次々に。初級の英語の本にしては本当に感動的なお話です。しかもノンフィクションですから驚きです。やはり人間に限らず母は強し！って感じですね。うちにも雌猫がいますが、彼女たちも火事になったら自分の子供たちを守ることができるでしょうか？あまり子育てをしない猫なんですが…。簡素な英語で書かれているし、英語がわからなくても挿絵で充分にわかりますから、たくさんの方にぜひ読んでいただきたい作品です。
