Sandra Locke and Eastwood never better together
They play off each other beautifully and the chemistry between them is electrifying, almost palpable. You can see how they love the outrageous, outlandish plot by Eastwood’s typical laconic sneer and the way they spit out the dialogue between them, especially Locke, in a bravura performance. My favorite of the many films they made together.

Great Eastwood 1970s classic. Some too hard on Sondra Locke here...
I grew up as kid during the 1970s. My love for film and finally seeing so many great movies came about more during the 1980s up to present day. Clint directed an enjoyable movie here. Too many people are hard on Sandra Locke. She was a good actress - not the greatest no, but she was a pretty lady, and she is fun to see in this film. Some have whined about the Blu Ray transfer quality. It is FINE!!! Maybe some need to clean their devices OR upgrade. And Clint is Clint here as Ben Shockley. It's also fun to see Phoenix AZ in the 1970s here. Every Eastwood fan should have this as it represents a time when he and Sandra Locke were a big Hollywood item working together. You can watch her on youtube in the full tv movie COVER ME BABE with Robert Forster which was before she even appeared in THE OUTLAW JOESY WALES. She was a beautiful woman and not given enough credit. Enjoy... BW

The Gauntlet [Blu-ray]
I review Blu Ray discs solely based upon the actual quality of the transfer from Standard Def to Blu Ray. Summaries of the film, opinions on acting and such have been written many times elsewhere so I will refrain from being redundant.I will say that I am a big Clint Eastwood fan but notice that his many films have also had some of the very poorest of transfers to Blu Ray. I wish I knew why.Keep in mind that what you see and hear often depends upon the actual quality of your home theater system, its speakers, amps, surround processor and your TV monitor. My home theater is fairly esoteric and would be considered very high end.VIDEO Quality.... I suppose this will be the best we can expect to see this film as it has clearly not been remastered in any way. However, the transcode to Blu Ray does up the video quality. Color grading is fairly natural but somewhat desaturated with most coloration tending towards a beige appearance. No colors are popping in this film. Then again, since a lot of the film takes place on the road from Vegas where the desert offers little color, I suppose the beige look is fitting. However, once they move into the city of their final destination, the color grading appears to be the same. While I saw no artifacting or film breaks and drop outs which I have seen in many of Clint's films on Blu Ray, there is also a serious lack of fine detail. Hair, desert brush, fine facial lines and more tend to be blurred out a bit. You do get used to this as you become more engrossed in the story line but do not expect the best contrast, deep blacks or much of anything else. That said, this is the best transfer I have seen of The Gauntlet.AUDIO QUALITY... The audio is a lossless Dolby True HD 5.1 but you really can't expect much from your home theater. Almost all the action and audio is spread across the front sound stage and almost nothing in your side and rear surrounds should you have either a 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system. There is some directionality for the front left and right speakers when reproducing the many gunshot foley fx in this film even if the gunshots do not sound quite right or realistic. Then again, much of what occurs in the film was not realistic either. (you have hundreds of police officers shooting at a bus and not one of them thinks to shoot out the tires?)At best, I would give the audio a 2.5.EXTRAS....there are none.I do hope this review has been of some help to you in deciding your purchase. Thanks for reading.

Should Have been a Dirty Harry Movie
This movie has plenty of action and Mr. Eastwood's acting is great. My disappointment with it was why was this not a Dirty Harry movie? If you like an absurd amount of gunfire you will like this movie. A bit much for my tastes but I still recommend it for all Eastwood fans most of which have seen it on television.

Nag, Nag, Nag
This isn't one of the Dirty Harry series but it might as well be. Clint Eastwood plays a tough Phoenix cop who's been around a long time and has become jaded. Most of the other cops regard him as a drunk. When he is sent to Las Vegas to bring back a prisoner who is to be a witness in a mob trial, he thinks it is just another detail nobody wants. It seems like nothing out of the ordinary until he actually tries to pick up the prisoner. She is a small time hooker but she goes berserk. She says that if she leaves Las Vegas, she will be killed. The casinos are even taking bets on her not making it. Survival is a longshot. Eastwood doesn't buy it at first but a few stray bullets and bombs convince him otherwise. He realizes that he got the assignment because he was not expected to make it and that he is being set up by someone in his own department. That, more than anything else, convinces him to make it and get his prisoner delivered alive.Getting there means running a gauntlet of betrayal and lots of bullets. It also means he has to deal with the girl played by Sondra Locke. As he is fond of saying, all she can do is nag, nag, nag. It an action packed movie that is well suited to Eastwood's style.

'A NOTHING WITNESS FOR A NOTHING TRIAL' ???
The film though somewhat far-fetched is hugely entertaining, I've not watched this1977 movie for some time, glad I took time-out to re-visit it.'Phoenix' Cop 'Ben Shockley' has never quite achieved his ambition to be involvedand solve that one big case. these days he tends to drink too much.He has been chosen by 'Commissioner Blakelock' (William Prince) to escort a key-witness '''Prostitute' 'Gus Mally'(Sandra Locke) from 'Vegas' back to 'Phoenix' forwhat 'Ben' (Clint Eastwood) has been told is a nothing trial. The assignment is one that he will soon learn is one that he's not expected to complete. When he learns there is a book running on his and 'Mally's' chances of completion withodds of 50-1 and rising. The fears that 'Mally' has are soon realized as they become under threat from the wordgo.Going to 'Vegas' Airport for a flight to 'Phoenix' no longer an option after a Police ambushat 'Mally's' home where the two had stopped off for her to change her clothing.'Ben' after a little bit of logical thinking from 'Mally' begins to realize he'd been chosen asa no hoper, in fact expendable, he realizes that there has to be a conspiracy which stemsfrom his 'Phoenix' headquarters itself. The nothing trial could well be high-profile, 'Mob' related in fact. After another set-up situation the two face a hazardous and eventful journey to 'Phoenix'What 'Ben' hasn't counted upon however is the explosive welcome that awaits them in'Phoenix'Many exciting incidents along the way as 'Officer Shockley' attempts to complete themission he'd been give against all odds. The picture quality is much better than some of the upgrades I've seen of 'Clint's' in recentyears.......although a 'U.S' Import purchase, the good news is that it is 'Region-Free'( 'Clint Eastwood' and 'Sandra Locke' were partners in real-life 1976- 1983 )

Watchable but not highly rated
Bought this film as a massive Clint Eastwood fan. Like these 70's era films as they have that nostalgia appeal. With regards to the Blu Ray its a good picture as you would expect with not too bad sound. There are no extras which is a little disappointing. The appeal of this film for me is the chemistry between Clint Eastwood and Sondra Locke. I like the way they play off each other with their witty remarks. I think Sondra gives that sense of humour which I like in some of the Clint Eastwood movies. As you will probably already know the general story line is Clint Eastwood is a cop who has not had a big case yet and who believes this one to be just the same. However, this one is different as even the cops are after taking both him and his witness out. The film is by no means as good as the Dirty Harry films, but the one liners are still there for all the fans of those. The ending is not bad although the film is a little slow to get going. However, its watchable and I did like the film overall, although by the end you feel its not up there with other films made. The bit missing for me is the hardness of the character like in the Dirty Harry films, but I suppose its not a Dirty Harry film and so we shouldn't expect that. Worth buying if you just like Clint Eastwood movies, but by no means a classic.

Classic Eastwood
I was hoping that this wouldn't be just a rehash of Magnum and happily it isn't.Alcoholic cop Ben Shockley (Eastwood) is a bit washed up and is chosen to transport a prostitute Gus Malley (Locke) to court. She is to testify in some minor crime, but unknown to Ben is that the defendant is a powerful mobster who will rather see Gus dead and buried. What turns out to be a routine transfer turns into a fight for life with most of the Police tricked into thinking that Ben is dangerous and needs to be stopped.Well paced action film with a bus that must have inspired the A-Team!At the current price of 3GBP it is an Eastwood bargain not to be missed
