Q: looking at this photos, this doesn't look like a true live edge piece of wood. is it?

If you are asking off it is actual wood, it is wood and the edge is "live" in that it is not sawn smooth. It is in two pieces that you screw together. The back piece which mounts to the has wall is squared off and fits flush to the wall on one side and the smooth flat back side of the front piece on the other. That front piece has the "live edge" . We were very happy with ours. I did however install it upside down to get a wider shelf. The "top" was narrower due to the live edge. Hope that helps.

Q: How much weight can each shelf hold? Would they be sturdy enough to put dishes on?

Hello! We have tested a 25lb weight onto of a larger size and it sits up well. We also have a 26lb TV ontop of a shelf. These must be installed into your studs and keep in mind that they are floating shelves with no support brackets so you do not want to overload them with tons of weight. Thanks!
