This was the first,and some consider,the greatest band that Miles ever led. It was jam packed with superstars. These discs find the classic quintet on tour in Europe and there is inevitably an element of repetition in the play list as they make there way through the Continent. This can be a bit disconcerting if you simply plough through all three discs - one after the other - but spaced apart, no harm is done. However, there is a noticeable edge to Trane's playing because, simply put, he didn't want to make the tour and was to leave Miles immediately after it finished to form his classic Quartet. He is heard soloing at considerable length, in the style for which he was to become reveered , and which appears to irk Miles from time to time - judging from his trumpet interjections. Miles was never a man to keep his opinions to himself!! At a later date - having been asked by Miles why his solos were always so long - Trane had confided that he didn't know how to finish his solo once he'd got started! To which Miles is supposed to have said .."Just take the horn out of your mouth man"!! These are fine discs of the Quintet in its closing stages.
