Coated Dumbbell Weights

I ordered 2 50lb dumbbells for our personal training studio. They arrived on time though I do have to note one of the packages was completely falling apart (the other one stayed together OK.) The weights were no worse for wear due to the packaging issue. They are 50 lb dumbbells and can obviously take a beating. The weights themselves did arrive with a coating of pungent oil on them, but we wiped them down and it was not nearly as noticeable after airing out for a day. We have a collection of different dumbbells in our studio, including the solid hex dumbbells also sold by Cap, and we made the decision to go with the rubber coated hex dumbbells going forward. They are comfortable in the hand (not too unreasonable to grip as a small woman, though I wish we could find slightly smaller handles), have a nice aesthetic, and feel a bit classier/fancier than those not coated with rubber. They are more forgiving when racking and moving about as I have personally smashed both kinds into my hip bone and would choose the rubber for that any day. However, the dumbbell that came in the intact box arrived defective. See my photo attached - the rubber part of the weight was too far down one end of the handle. If held in the center of the grip, the weight was off-balance, which is potentially very dangerous when approaching a max chest press with this weight. I contacted CAP directly per Amazon that very day December 13th. I explained the issue and provided some information. On December 20th they sent me an order and tracking number for my replacement weight and it arrived December 27th. This time the box was completely covered in packing tape and 100% intact (I had made note to them the previous package arrived falling apart). The is dumbbell was perfect and we are excited to have a set in the studio. While the defective dumbbell was inconvenient, I have given a 5 star review because we are very happy with the product, especially for the cost (very economical), and I am very pleased with the customer service in correcting the defect (and no, we did not have to ship 50lbs back to them!) I expect to buy more products in the future from this company as needed. Just make sure you check your order for any defects before use.

I lead a strength and balance class for active seniors and the weight portion of our routine led me to York hex coated dumbells in this very usable 5 pound weight. An 'Old Fellow' myself, I started by buying these for myself and then I bought two for the class and then people in our community started to move up a bit in weight resistance...and we needed more! I love the positive knurled grip handles. I have medium-sized hands for a man...these work for small and large hands equally well. Big-handed guys seem to feel they would like a 'beefier' grip. Shoppers will get 'pro'-style equipment in a high quality package. The hex design means I can grab two to provide ten pounds of resistance...or than I can move two in each hand to pick up after class...or that the weights stay put on our weight rack. I even like the 'fresh from the package' carbon rubber smell! We are 'into' santitization in our complex and these are easily sprayed and wiped down with our go-to sanitizer. These really beat the textured vinyl/polymer light weight units we have in our rack---those are grey and grungy and difficult to clean.

I was skeptical after reading some negative reviews but thought I’d give this company a try and I’m not disappointed. Weights came and were both same size same grip(bc I read some people say they were different) I ordered the 10lb ones. Yes they had a scent of rubber but that’s not a big deal. Only complaint I have is wasn’t packaged in a sturdy enough box for weights and box was a bit messed up however I will definitely be ordering more to add to my home gym. Update: ordered the 12lbs and I’m equally satisfied with the quality. I’ll definitely keep buying these weights to add to my home gym!! It’s a great price as well as product!

I have a full set of these in 20-60 lbs. Very well made. There was a rubber odor at first, but that fairly quickly faded.

I ordered 2 60lb DBs. The boxes they arrived in were a bit smashed & there was zero packing, but surprisingly the DBs were in good shape. I think most every home user would like the overall quality of these. I am not sure what would happen if they were continuously dropped onto a hard surface. The coating might not hold up over time, that is just supposition on my part. The grips are very nice & work much better for me than a straight bar you find on some DBs. Why 4 stars? You guessed it, the smell. I would compare it to road asphalt, its fairly strong. Therefore, before doing anything with these thoroughly wash them off with a rag and dish soap at least 2 times. Black residue will flow off. In addition, I put them on my deck during the day for around 8-10 days to let them air out even more. That helped & they seem to be getting better over time. Overall, these are nice dumbbells for a home gym if you want to deal with the smell & washing them off.

Picked up a pair of 25's on sale from Amazon for $19.99/ea. Dumbbells arrived individually double boxed. Interior boxing was from CAP, secondary boxing appeared to be typical Amazon. Each dumbbell had "25" embedded in the rubber coating on each end. No other identifiable markings were on the product. No "CAP" designation other than the packaging which also states "Made in China". The dumbbell is sturdy as it should be, the contoured grip fits nicely into my palm and the texture is sufficient enough to maintain a non-slick grip. My wife states that the texture is too rough, that is debatable. The dumbbell has a slight odor to it, a rubber/chemical smell which is not overpowering and I'm sure will wear off over time. UPDATE #1: After 2 nights sitting in the garage, on foam/rubber exercise flooring, the dumbells left an oily residue where they made contact with the flooring (see picture) The one criticism I do have is that the poundage markings are not colored in contrast on the black rubber. This, I foresee to be more of an annoyance when stored next to 20s or 30s. Nothing a home remedy can't fix though. Overall, great value in my opinion for the price, now to find some 35s on sale. UPDATE #2: I've since picked up a few other sets of the CAP brand dumbbells as I feel they are of good value. I did notice one additional criticism on the 25's though... the numbering alignment is off. Meaning, all of the numbers on my other sets are read from the outside of the dumbbell in... on the 25s its read from the inside out (or upside down if you will). I quickly picked up on this when racked with others.

Bought these for my 16 year old son for home workout. This is a gym quality rubber coated hex dumbbell. The handle is "ergo" but is thick at 35mm. There are some brands out there with graded handle sizes based on how heavy it is but this is the same size throughout. People with smaller hands will find this to be a large size. The smell is that of a new tire and is not overpowering. Cap is a brand that also makes home weight sets and this is truly the high end of the set. It is comparable with most lower end rubber hex dumbbells but does not have the features of higher end dumbbells from York and Hampton that have either a graded handle or higher quality urethane coating. For the price this is a good dumbbell.

The dumbbells themselves are of great quality. I personally prefer the hex style dumbbell over round styles since hex-dumbbells are more stable for different exercises such as renegade rows. My only complaint is that the material on the dumbbells arrives pretty dirty (probably from the box) with some sticky oil stains on it. I didn't notice any bad smell. It does smell like rubber, but it isn't overpowering. I recommend washing the dumbbells once you get them and then dry them promptly. Aside from the tendency to attract lint and dirt, I have no complaints about the dumbbells. They do their job perfectly.
