Frequently read, well enjoyed
Our 3 year old has really enjoyed all the Small books by Lois Lenski. Policeman Small is one of our most recent additions and he regularly adds this to his stack to read. The story is simple and engaging with nice illustrations. Depending on his mood he either requests we read the story or asks that we listen as he recites it to us. As far as stories go that you hear on repeat, this is an enjoyable option.

A little gem that new generations still can enjoy
I first encountered the Mr Small stories by Lois Lenski when I was a little boy in the 1950's. Over the years my parents gave me all of them as gifts. My brother and I enjoyed the stories that reflected how we all lived in those much more innocent and less complicated times. Now I am a grandfather and enjoy the opportunity to share these wonderful little stories with my grandchildren. The stories, though dated, still hold up and share basic values of workmanship, care for community and family without any of the hype we see in some childrens' literature these days. The stories make a good starting point for meaningful dialogue between mixed generations.... " what was it like when you were a little boy grandpa?"enjoy this and all the other Lois Lenski books, they are little gems.

This is a great book for preschoolers
This is a great book for preschoolers. It may feel a little dull to adults, but there seems to be something really appealing about this sequence of everyday events for young children. Some of it is outdated/old-fashioned, but maybe that's even part of the appeal. My son (3) has loved this book since he was 1, and he likes to call pedestrian signals "Stop Go signs" now. Just be careful when you order that you get the edition you want: the board book version is much shorter than the hardcover edition, and Amazon seems to set it as the default. The abridged version may be good for the youngest listeners, but my son was already addicted to the full-length one we'd had from the library and would have been very upset if parts were missing!

One of the best books we own!
Policeman Small is a fantastic book that we've been reading to our son since he was 6 months old, and even then he was engaged with all the colors and sounds. Now he's 17 months, and he loves all the exciting pictures of cars and trucks. It was a great learning tool, too-- we went to a parade one day, then showed him the parade in the book, and something clicked. After that, he'd jump right to that page, stand up and look at it smiling and clapping. Lois Lenski's artwork is superb, and I'd love to see more of her books kept in print, especially in this board book format. This is his favorite of the "Small/Little" series of board books. Also recommended: "The Little Train," "The Little Fire Engine" and "Cowboy Small."

My 3 year old has an uncle who is a police man
My three year old grandson has seen his uncle in uniform and in his squad car. He liked the book and liked the message. It portrays policemen as keeping order on the sidewalks and street and being helpful to children. The board book format is good for a two or three year old who might be "hard on books." Not too many words per page, but it does have a message that makes sense to their young minds.

He doesn't arrest bad guys or do anything controversial
Policeman Small is a traffic cop. He doesn't arrest bad guys or do anything controversial. He is eminently suitable for young readers. My pre-schoolers loved him. As always, Lenski gives all the daily detail that young readers crave. The prefect book for fire obsessed little boys.
