The Nightly News is a very unique and innovative example of comic book narrative, as it succesfully integrates Graphic Design with comic-book illustrations, making really smart use of infographics, vector art, typography and powerfull page layouts.All smoothly integrated with an outstanding script, dealing with Media's power abuse. It's a tale of revenge and revolution: a group of people who got their lifes ruined by the News industry decide to take a final stand and put a stop to it recurring to acts of extreme violence. If you liked/loved Fight Club, chances are you will feel the same about The Nightly News. And Jonathan Hickman gives this story both a unique voice regarding story and art/design, so it stands on its own.About the edition, this anniversary hardcover is great, and it features:- Oversized presentation.- Sewn binding.- High quality, glossy paper stock.- Over 80 pages of extras, DVD style.The extras include full script with author's note to issue #1, a 9-step overview to the design process (quite usefull for artist/designers), and comments on the color palette and cover design.My only (pseudo)complaint is that the edition does not feature a dust jacket, but the hardcover has a great and lasting printing, so it's not a big deal at all.

I went into this book with no real background and was thoroughly impressed. The art was very interesting and the charts/graphs/statistics really worked well with the flow of the story. It had a very brutal gritty feel...Most importantly much like the first time I saw the film fight club...i had a feeling of, I am reading something in a style and way that I haven't seen before. It was fresh, it was intelligent, it was fast paced. I definitely highly recommend if you are a fan of the thinking persons graphic novel genre

I think Jonathan Hickman is talented . . . but this is early/debut work. If you're coming to this volume via Hickman's The Manhattan Projects (incredible/amazing) or Fantastic Four / FF work (consistently good), you may be disappointed--with the exception of his embedded Infographics work, which is certainly innovative.While some reviewers have strong opinions about this, I was kinda . . . just . . . meh. I did not care for the monochrome treatments (even if I appreciate what he's doing), the lettering style, some of the panel layout, and a lot of the artwork. The story itself was "just OK." Workmanlike. Smart enough, but not sparkling smart. Heavy-handed at times.In terms of a buying recommendation? You buy this one because it's *Historical Hickman* and you're hunting down his early work. (Sort of like buying Animal Man trades when you're following Morrison.) This is the oversized edition and well-manufactured. It's $22.

Best first book by the best current graphic novelist. Do yourself a favor and read on.

I would have given this 5 stars, but it's missing stuff from the trade paperback version.While I'm thrilled that the script and other stuff has been included, a number of fascinating elements from the graphic novel were left out, including:* a forward by Andy Diggle* acknowledgements* MOST IMPORTANT some NOTES on stuff with commentary by the author* an afterward and other stuffI'm sure that ther were good reasons to trim this stuff, but couldn't it have been made available online somewhere?

Stunningly brilliant firs work from someone who has become a modern comics master.If you want to know where Hickman started, it is here, and it is brilliant. The extras give you insight into why he chose comics and what inspired him.

One of the best graphic novels I've ever read. Couldn't put it down. This is Hickman at his very finest.

I read the other Amazon reviews before purchasing, as they seemed rather enthusiastic. Then I did some other Googling on this title. All signs pointed towards extreme satisfaction. None were lies. The reviews spoke the truth. 'The Nightly News' is epic. It is revolutionary in style. The subject/plot is overwhelmingly relevant. This is the real deal. The art is simply counter to most everything out there now. If your brain requires intelligent subject matter that will invoke the synapses of thought provocation, then this is a book for you. Being a partial conspiracy theorist, doesn't hurt either. Buy this book. Period. The Anniversary Deluxe HC is stunning!
