Soon to be a major anime series from the makers of Attack on Titan ! ENGLAND AT WAR The foolish King Ethelred has fled, and Askeladd's band is one of hundreds plundering the English countryside. Yet victory brings no peace to the elderly Danish King Sweyn, who worries that his untested, sensitive son Canute will never be ready to take the throne. The king's attempt to force his son to become a man places the young prince within the grasp of the gleeful killer Thorkell! Whoever holds Canute holds the key to the thrones of England and Denmark – and Askeladd has his own reasons for joining the fray! "With its rich visual details, emotional pull and strong characters, this historical epic is an instant winner." - Anime News Network Winner of the Japan Media Arts Awards Grand Prize for Manga and the Kodansha Manga Award From the acclaimed author of Planetes Review: Perfect for all fans - If you like historical fantasy, vikings, medieval warfare and drama, revenge, justice, and want to question your own ethics as you read then Viking Saga will deliver on all fronts. Not just a great story with fantastic art. It's fast-paced and full of action with characters that will steal your heart and make you smile. I can't wait until someone who's appreciated the story walks in and sees my collection, in order! Review: Absolutely stunning and engrossing; wonderful epic historical manga - This is the second omnibus in the Vinland Saga historical manga series. I continue to be blown away by the incredible artwork, wonderful characterization, and excellent story in this series. Askeladd and his band of warriors continue rampaging through England and end up in battle with London where they meet the rather viciously hilarious Thorkill. We also meet Prince Canute whom Askeladd decides to go on a mission and rescue in order to win the Danish King Sweyn’s favor. Whoever holds Prince Canute holds the keys to both the thrones of England and Denmark and Askeladd has large ambitions. We also get a lot more backstory on Thorfinn. We find out some of the things he had to do when he was younger to survive and how he lost his family. Thorfinn is a fantastic character that is hard not to love. The addition of Thorkill was awesome...he is so enthusiastically evil and such an awesome fighter. Prince Canute is another interesting addition to the story. There is a ton of war and action in this volume. We see a lot of the horrors of war (there is also quite a bit of swearing, rape, and dismemberment) so I would recommend for adult readers only. The illustration is amazingly detailed, even the backgrounds are very realistic. Character expression is very well done as well. There are a ton of characters in the story but I never have trouble telling them apart. The story is still epic in proportions. I continue to enjoy the historical summaries at the end of each chapter. This is just really a very high quality epic historical fantasy manga and is really unlike anything I have ever read before. Overall an absolutely fantastic epic historical manga. The illustration is fantastic, the characters are complex and interesting, and the story is fascinating. I strongly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys manga. Really it is incredibly well done.

Blood and thunder
This is an amazing series to read. For those who are looking at this and some how haven't read the first volume then i guess there will need to be a bit of an explanation as to why this series is worth picking up. Vinland Saga is about a young man named Thorfin who follows a band of mercenaries in order to challenge the leader in one on one honorable battle, to avenge his father who was slain by the leader. It's a rather bloody and detailed manga that is comparable to the likes of Berserk. The battle's and fights are epic, and the story is enticing. I would go into more detail, but I don't want to spoil things, If you read the first volume and liked it, you will not be disappointed with this one.

Probably my most favorite of ALL TIME!!
First and foremost, it is the art in it that got me absolutely and madly hooked. Then, upon reading it I got sucked in by the story. And yes, there is violence and gore but it is never gratuitous because it serves the purpose of telling the story which by the way is pretty darn amazing. Mr. Makoto Yukimura is a sharp artist as well as an amazing story teller. Even my kids who aren't at all into history are loving this...The portrayal of the Vikings in this manga is real and raw and unforgiving but such is reality too...The story incorporating a fictional character into it makes it all the more interesting and wanting you to read more. I recommend this to those who love medieval times, Vikings and a good sound story without any trace of sci-fi or fantasy.

Fantastic historical-fiction manga!!
Book arrived immaculate. Not a scratch on the hardcover, no ripped pages, and packaged relatively safe. As for the book itself, Vinland Saga is amazing. The lands of Scandinavia and England are beautifully drawn, and the realities of medieval Europe are harsh and brutal. There's even pieces of history from the time period thrown in to give backstory. I highly enjoyed the first volume, so I look forward to continuing this historical adventure. Five stars!!

Very good
~3.5-4/5 I must say that it has taken me way too long to get around to reading this series. It’s definitely worth picking up, for sure, and I need to hurry that up. Askeladd is leading his band of Vikings around, invading territory and killing people and stealing. They’re all very unashamed of it all, and quite terrible, too. Askeladd knows what he’s doing, though, and is smart about it. It doesn’t shy from how terrible they are, though, and what they do to the people in the villages that they take. Thorfinn is tagging along with him, having made a deal. Thorfinn is a good fighter, but he’s simply waiting till he’s better, getting stronger until he can beat Askeladd. I do think that Thorfinn needs to work on the smarts, though, as he’s not that good at tactics yet. We meet a few new characters, but I’m not sure who’s going to be sticking around. I do want to see more of Ylva, though, because she’s a great character. I’m hoping to pick up the next one soon. I really need to catch up with this series. Masterclass Storytelling—Askeladd is One of the Best Characters in Manga
If Book 1 hooked you with its brutal introduction to the Viking era, Book 2 completely solidifies Vinland Saga as a masterpiece. Makoto Yukimura takes the story far beyond a simple historical action manga, weaving a complex tale of revenge, honor, and the harsh realities of a warrior's life. Why This Volume is Perfection: The Best Dynamic in the Series: This book skips forward in time, and seeing the twisted relationship between Thorfinn and Askeladd is incredible. Thorfinn lives solely to kill the man who murdered his father, yet he is forced to work under him to earn his duels. The psychological toll and tension this creates is brilliant. Askeladd Steals the Show: Askeladd cements himself as one of the most layered, fascinating characters in manga history. He isn't a mindless brute; he’s a brilliant strategist, a cold-blooded pragmatist, and endlessly charismatic. Breathtaking Art Style: The level of detail Yukimura puts into the backgrounds, the historical ships, and the sheer grit of the combat is stunning. The action scenes have an incredible sense of momentum and weight without ever feeling messy or hard to follow. Premium Hardcover Omnibus: Kodansha’s 2-in-1 format remains the absolute gold standard for manga releases. The binding is tough, the paper is thick, and the color pages included at the beginning are beautiful. The Verdict: An absolute 10/10. This volume perfectly balances visceral action with brilliant character writing, setting up a legendary historical epic. If you were on the fence after the first book, this is the one that will completely pull you in. Pros: Incredible time-skip that deepens the main plot Phenomenal artwork and historically accurate designs Brilliant psychological tension between Thorfinn and Askeladd Gorgeous hardcover presentation that holds up to multiple reads
