Great Value, Great Product
This makes a TON of food. A cup of the crumble expands when you rehydrate it. A bag this big will last a long time, and it's great that it's shelf-stable. It's not seasoned and has a mild flavor. That makes it versatile since you can season it to suit whatever dish you're making. Prep is an extremely simple 1:1 ratio of hot water to product. Just mix, let sit, and drain if needed. I prep it in a glass storage container, eliminating cleanup. I saw another review complaining about the serving size being a tablespoon, whereas comparable products do serving sizes of a cup or so. There are 16 tbsp in a cup, so do the math and figure out a comparable serving size shortcut if you'd like. This is way more protein-rich per serving than the alternatives I've eaten the past.

miracle calorie cutting food
This stuff is a miracle food. Very low in calories, satiating, high in protein, and convenient. It's always ready to go, just boil water and add it to a scoop of TVP and season, five minutes later it's ready. I've been eating this to cut calories and it's incredibly helpful. I typically add a packet of beef or bullion powder plus whatever spices fit the recipe, otherwise it is very bland. It has no flavor of it's own, so make sure to spice it heavily! Great in pasta sauce, chili, Mexican, sloppy joes...

Great TVP!
Love this product for so many reasons. It's economical, and absorbs whatever flavor you use, and stores well.

Good TVP, but don't follow the Taco Filling Recipe as Instructed...
Very good TVP. However, if you plan on doing the Taco Recipe on the back, DO NOT FOLLOW SOME OF THE STEPS. First off, use TWO CUPS of Vegetable Stock, and DO NOT ADD THE TVP to the Mixture when bringing it to a boil. Instead, follow the first part of the recipe for sautéing the Onions and Garlic, and then when it says to add the stock, and TVP, SKIP THE TVP, and add 2 CUPS VEGETABLE STOCK, and the 1 pouch of Taco Seasoning, and bring all that to a boil, then remove from the heat, and THEN, add the 1 cup of TVP, and stir it in, and let sit for 10 minutes. Doing it this way, will let you end up with Taco Filling that looks just like actual Hamburger filling. If you do the recipe by following their directions, with only 1 cup of vegetable stock, and sautéing it, it makes you end up with an overcooked, dry lump of mush.

Fast and convenient non-meat source of protein...
Comes out delicious when I add water with tamari sauce and Yondu sauce... been making all kinds of dishes that call for ground beef with this product and they all come out great!

Quality and affordability.
I gave this product a 5 star rating based on price, quality, and quantity. I bought in an attempt to adhere to a vegetarian diet, however, I just can't get past the texture. Not my thing.

Oh, NO, honey.
Decided to try out this brand when our regular go-to was out of stock for a while. I did feel concerned by the other negative reviews, but hoped for the best; particularly as it seemed like a good bargain. Alas, this turned out to be one of those things that really was too good to be true 😩 Speaking with the experience of a foodie/home chef who's worked with it a time or a hundred, TVP is NOT supposed to be that bizarre reddish-pinkish color; and I don't know about you, but in over 20-some years of living vegan, never have I ever before seen TVP resemble gravel. STILL I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt, and began prepping it for dinner. After all, with a little this and that, you can dress up just about any dish that needs a helping hand! Sadly, this "TVP" mmediately morphed into a sickening brown mush that, frankly, looked entirely too much like a steaming pile of 💩... and there's just no dressing that up. All in all, the delivery arrived within the expected time frame, and the packaging was mostly alright (the bag appeared to be covered in a great deal of TVP dust, but I didn't see any damage). And, had it been something I wanted to put it my mouth, I would have been delighted with the quantity. However, the product itself was completely inedible - so much so, that I couldn't even in good conscience *give* it away. I would have GREATLY appreciated a refund. It seems that some of the customers are quite happy with the product; if so, that's great, and may you enjoy it in good health! As for me and mine... oh, no, honey. No, thank you.

NO COOKING DIRECTIONS! | 11 months til expiration | Re-sealable Plastic | Long & Awkward Packaging
NO COOKING DIRECTIONS! | 11 months til expiration | Re-sealable Plastic | Long & Awkward Packaging --- NOTE: There's NO DIRECTIONS on the package! --- Bought = Apr '17 Expiration = 3-20-18 So, you have less than a year to eat this (~ 11 months) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INGREDIENT: Defatted Soy Flour (This is the only thing listed on the sticker) --- OTHER INFO (on sticker): - 53% protein - Caramel Color --- NUTRITION INFO: - Serving Size = 1 tbsp - 40 cal / serving - Sodium = 1 mg - Carb = 3.5g | 1% - Fiber = 2 g | 8% - Sugar = 1.5 g - Protein = 6 g | 12% - 0 fat - 0 cholesterol * I prefer if it was actually "0 mg" sodium vs 1 mg. So, even though it says "0%" sodium, it's NOT actually sodium-free...since this has 1 mg of sodium! * I wish they would increase the amount of Fiber & the amount of Protein (per serving) * I wish they would have included a photo of the BACK (clear, large, zoomable). --- SUGARS: 1.5 g I wish it did NOT have sugar. Or if they did, they could use stevia or a natural sweetener (that's also 0 calorie). --- There's a CLEAR part of the plastic, on the front. This is good, so you can easily & quickly see what's inside. It's convenient for knowing what exactly is stored in there. I'm visual, so I like to be able to SEE. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS: They can improve the packaging by using a square shaped plastic, instead of the long one that they currently use. The long shape is awkward, especially for storing in the pantry or wherever you'd store it. Also, although it looks long...it's actually only FILLED HALFWAY. Even if it was filled more to the top, a SQUARE shape would be more ideal & less awkward (making it easier to store). *** I've bought Hoosier Hill Farm before. So far, I like their stuff but there's always room for improvement :) --- A similar brand is "Augason Farms". Augason Farms Beef Flavored Vegetarian Meat Substitute 37 oz #10 Can These are similar except Augason comes in a can & this comes in a plastic. The plastic bag looks like it's re-sealable, which is a good thing! It's also notched on both ends, so that makes it easier to open (without needing scissors)...if that matters =)

BEST chili!!
I have just made the BEST chili ever..for a family of carnivors! I used to buy a product in bulk similar to this, havent been able to find it for 15 years..and then I saw this!! It is EXACTLY as described, and I made a 15 serving pot of chili with red and white beans, 2 cans of tomatoes, and spices, and still have over half the bag left! Note: 3 cups of this protein will make a huge chili pot!! SO HAPPY!

I'll only be using this from now on.
I love the quality, taste and texture of this product. As a vegan, it's such an easy source of protein – and great value for money.

Good TVP. A great replacement for cooked ground meat
Hoosier Hill Farm TVP is an excellent source of protein with a texture much like cooked ground meat, and a neutral flavour so it takes on the flavour of what it is cooked in. I use it to replace cooked ground meat in spaghetti sauce, chili, casseroles and other things. Because the flavout is neutral, I use it in place of any ground meat (beef, chicken, pork, turkey). It is best in a recipe that has other flavourful ingredients like chili, but can be used in a recipe in which the meat is the main flavour (e.g. tortiere) if the TVP is mixed with enough real meat. This TVP is good. TVP is formed into small pieces like cooked ground beef that has been dried. The little pieces get damaged from handling (shaking in the package) so some of it breaks into powder. The amount of powder is reasonable and I just add the powder directly to what I am cooking where it rehyrdates quickly and adds nutrition, though not texture. Meat eaters trying to save money or reduce meat consumption: Try replace half the cooked ground meat in a recipe with 1/2 c. of dry TVP. e.g. instead of using 2 pound of ground beef, try use one pound of ground beef plus 1/2 cup of TVP. If making something saucy like spaghetti sauce or chili, fry the ground meat and make the recipe as usual. Add the TVP directly to the sauce/chili when you start to simmer it. If making a casserole it might be better to soak the TVP in boiling water for 5 minutes then mix it with the cooked ground meat. I just weighed 1/2 cup of this TVP at 40 grams. At the current TVP price of $22 for 907 gram, that's replacing ground beef with TVP costing about $1/pound, so TVP can reduce grocery bills. I chose Hoosier Hill TVP because it was low cost per kg, available in a reasonable sized package, a brand that I recognized, and it was in the form similar to cooked ground beef.

Protein less in latest order
Giving it a four because being only the second time I've bought this stuff (I'm hooked) I noticed the protein content has dropped 1 gram per tablespoon from 4 to 3.
