Great Camera Bad Audio Great Support (Audio Fixed!)--New Issue
Please do not take this as a negative review even though I am critical of some of the camera features. The cameras themselves are a bit tricky to set up with the NVR as the setting made on the camera overwrite the settings made on the NVR an visa versa. Also, the cameras will bounce around a wifi mesh network (I use Linksys Velop) unless you split the A band from the BGN band. The cameras will jump all around the A band with no regard for RSSI (Signal strength) and ultimately connect to the access point that may be on the other side of the house as opposed to the one 20 feet away. I worked around this by splitting my network channels and assigning multiple SSIDs to the network and forced the cameras to connect to specific SSIDs. Not an ideal solution but it will have to work until the Linksys Velop allows me to assign mac addresses to specific network nodes. The internal radio for the wifi seems weak and the antennas are very small. Not sure what the gain on the antennas is but I would guess a 1 or 2db. I replaced with 6db Cisco antennas and have had much better connectivity. My camera that is furthest away from the network I have outfitted with a 16db antenna.Another big problem with these cameras is the on-board mic. ABSOLUTELY POINTLESS as implemented. the gain is turned way up in the firmware and cannot be adjusted. The only control you have is input level and output level but no control over the internal gain of the mic. What this means is you will get very high pitched crackling and popping and a heavy static. The mics need more work. An option for an external mic would be nice. (Since this post, two things have changed on my system and now the mic is working as expected. 1. GW released a firmware update which added functionality as well as addressed bugs. 2. I have wired my system with Ethernet and disconnected the WI-fi. It appears when the system has enough bandwidth the audio mic works and the audio compression delivers audio with few errors. Because of this I am updating my review to 5 stars). The video is nice and pretty high-res but you are limited to only 20 frames per second regardless of resolution. You can however configure compression, bit-rate, color levels etc... which is pretty nice. The video is the best feature of this camera and that is a good thing considering it is a video camera.Motion detection is available but incapable of maintaining a sweet spot. You can set the sensitivity between 1-10. any setting between 1-8 picks up almost nothing. (Had my son run around the yard to test.) move the slider to 9 and it lights up like a Christmas tree with even the slightest movement setting it off. Blowing leaves, mosquito's, rain, a cob-web, etc.. If you set it on 10 the motion detection will overwhelm the camera and you will have to reboot the camera. The VERY BEST THING ABOUT THIS CAMERA SYSTEM from GW IS....... THE GW TECH SUPPORT. Listen, these people care and will help you get your system up and running, regardless of the shortfalls of this particular camera, this company treated me great and earned my business. I will purchase from them again. In the mean time I hope the manufacture of these new cameras can work out the kinks and release some new firmware to address the audio(mic), internal wi-fi radio strength and let the user manage the cameras RSSI threshold setting. Overall I recommend this system on the basis of value and performance.Update2I just lowered this camera system back to 4 stars because the 12v power supply has died on 3 of my cameras. Not all at once but after the first one died I ordered a new one from amazon. After the second one died I ordered another one from Amazon. And now, just today, a third one died which tells me they have a problem with these 12V power supplies. Be prepared to purchase replacements.
