The Faber Castell Polychromos Pencils are a good choice for adult coloring books. They have soft leads with very intense color that lays down easily onto the page.

For a newbie adult coloring book colorist, is it advisable to buy the 120 set?

If you have the extra dollars for the 120 set, go for it... I have the 60 set and it's great, but sometimes I wish I got the 120 set when I'm on my coloring book

what tools would i use to blend?

I blend these with a paintbrush dipped in baby oil. Dab off the excess oil from your brush before blending. I love the results

Do these have a strong smell?

I have not noticed a strong smell of any kind.
